(Re)generating Texts: Parody, Pastiche and Other Practices of Rewriting

Veranstaltungsdatum:

05.03.2026

Deadline Abstract:

30.09.2025

Rewriting a text is, to some extent, a practice of regeneration, of giving a second life, of reclaiming the past and bringing it to our present. As Linda Hutcheon proposes, the writing of a parody supposes as much a critical distance as an homage to an original text. In the Hispanophone and Lusophone worlds, revisiting classic works of poetry to infuse them with a new life has been a common practice. The Greek tragedy of Antigona, for instance, has been adapted and readapted by several contemporary authors such as the Cuban author Yerandi Fleites, the Peruvian José Watanabe, and the Mexican writer Sara Uribe. The fictional rewriting of Don Quijote by the fictional author Pierre Menard, invented by Borges, is another classic example. More recently, the Brazilian Manoel Herzog’s A comédia de Alissia Bloom offers an innovative reinterpretation of Dante’s Commedia. This panel seeks to open a discussion of modern and contemporary practices of intertextual appropriation. Critical readings of parodies, pastiches, collages, creative distortions, and other forms of literary appropriations are welcome. Presentations in English, Spanish and Portuguese are accepted.
