Veranstaltungsdatum:

Deadline Abstract:

30.09.2025

Dear colleagues,

It is my pleasure to invite you to submit your creative work and scholarly reflections and papers to participate in the panel Media and Aesthetics of Environmental Decay in the “Global South"  to be held at NEMLA's Conference in Pittsburgh, PA.

This panel welcomes both critical analyses and practice-based contributions from artists, scholars, filmmakers, photographers and theorists that explore how cultural production from the Global South is engaging with the media and aesthetics of environmental transformation and decay. In the context of intensifying ecological crises, we ask: how are histories of damaged, disappearing, or radically altered habitats narrated in the 21st century? What forms of storytelling, visualization, and design emerge from places long entangled with extractivism, colonialism, and climate precarity? We seek to discuss, from an interdisciplinary and multimedia perspective, how the past twenty-five years have witnessed a proliferation of cultural production that not only documents but actively reimagines environmental history. While much scholarship and art on this topic has centered Euro-American contexts and production, this panel turns its attention to the diverse, situated, and speculative responses arising from Latin America, Africa, South and Southeast Asia, and other regions marked by colonial violence and ecological degradation. We are especially eager to include work that blurs disciplinary boundaries, reclaims indigenous or subaltern epistemes, and foregrounds aesthetic strategies emerging from and responsive to specific environmental contexts.

Please send 200-300 words abstracts, or description of your creative project with a link to a sample of your work (for creative projects only), and a short bio (100 words or less) to the submissions website:
