Romans d'anticipation scientifique au tournant du XIXe siècle (1860-1940) (Scientific anticipation novels at the turn of the nineteenth century (1860-1940)) – ANTICIPATION
Ce projet interdisciplinaire, au croisement de l’histoire littéraire et de l’histoire des sciences, se propose d’analyser la naissance d’un genre nouveau à la fin du XIXe siècle et au début du XXe : le roman d’anticipation scientifique. La recherche vise la compréhension d’un moment fondateur, où sont posées les bases d’un rapport aux sciences qui continue à structurer nos représentations actuelles des sciences et des techniques. A travers la collaboration de spécialistes du roman, de la presse, de la littérature populaire et de l’histoire des sciences, l’objectif sera de saisir les enjeux intellectuels, idéologiques et esthétiques dont sont porteurs ces romans d’anticipation. En outre, grâce à un travail de réédition et de mise à disposition des textes en ligne, ce programme de recherche mettra en valeur des corpus romanesques désormais peu lus et étudiés, alors qu’ils ont constitué un des vecteurs privilégiés d’interrogation des évolutions scientifiques, dans la culture médiatique du tournant du XIXe siècle.
L’enjeu de cette recherche collective sera de modéliser le déploiement du genre du roman d’anticipation scientifique sur une période de quatre-vingt ans, entre 1860 et 1940. Le projet vise en effet à renouveler le regard sur une question d’histoire littéraire et de poétique romanesque à travers le recours à des méthodes d’analyse nouvelles. L’équipe de recherche se propose d’analyser un corpus d’environ 600 œuvres, grâce à l’élaboration collective d’une base de données (qui sera intégrée à un site ouvert au public). Cette étude de cas pourra donc être analysée et évaluée comme modèle théorique pour la compréhension d’un genre. Au-delà des spécificités du corpus envisagé, le protocole d’analyse mis en place et son usage des outils informatiques propres aux « humanités numériques » pourront alors être appliqués à d’autres corpus littéraires.
Une analyse interne des textes s’attachera plus particulièrement à trois axes de recherche. On analysera les supports éditoriaux afin d’élaborer une première définition du genre passant par son étude matérielle, en incluant l’exploration de la composante visuelle du genre (illustrations). Le deuxième axe visera à produire une théorisation du genre du roman d’anticipation scientifique en s’appuyant sur une étude poétique du corpus et sur l’analyse de la réception critique des œuvres. Le troisième axe de recherche interrogera enfin les enjeux épistémologiques et idéologiques des romans.
Parallèlement à ces travaux scientifiques, le programme de recherche mènera des actions de diffusion et de valorisation à destination d’un plus vaste public : réalisation de deux expositions sur les romans d’anticipation scientifique, projection de cycles d’adaptations cinématographiques des romans (1900-1940).
This interdisciplinary project, at the intersection of literature history and science history, proposes to analyze the birth of a new genre in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries: the scientific anticipation novel. This research aims at understanding a founding moment, when the bases of a relationship to science (which still structures our current representations of science and technology) is established. With the collaboration of specialists of novel, press, popular literature and science history, the aim will be to understand the intellectual, ideological and aesthetical issues brought by these anticipation novels. In addition, thanks to a republishing work and the online publication of texts, this research program will highlight fiction corpuses that are now little read and studied though they were privileged vectors to question scientific changes in the media culture of the turn of the nineteenth century.
The goal of this collaborative research will be to model the deployment of the anticipation novel over a period of eighty years, between 1860 and 1940. Indeed, this project aims to take a new look at a question of literature history and novel poetics through the use of new analysis methods. The research team will analyze a corpus of about 600 works, thanks to the collective development of a database (which will be included in a public web site). This case study will hence be analyzed and evaluated as a theoretical model for understanding a genre. Beyond the specifics of the considered corpus, the analysis protocol and its use of software tools specific to "digital humanities" will then be applicable to other literary corpuses.
An internal analysis of the texts will focus in particular on three research directions. Editorial media will be analyzed so as to develop a first definition of the genre through its material study, including the exploration of the visual component of the genre (illustrations). The second direction will be to produce a theory of the anticipation novel genre through a poetics-based study of the corpus and an analysis of the critical reception of works. Finally, the third research direction will interrogate the epistemological and ideological issues of the novels.
Along with this scientific work, the research program will lead dissemination and valuation actions towards a wider audience: two exhibits about anticipation novels will be proposed, as well as the projection of movies adapting the novels (1900-1940).
