Body Landscapes in Silent Cinema

In the historical interplay between nature and culture, the modern age occupies a special position where the relationship between body, technology and landscape is played out in ever more dynamic ways. Techno-economic and imperial spatial developments can be observed in the form of emerging mass tourism, increasing industrialization of rural areas and a general rise in mobility. Cinema does not only document these processes but also constructs and critiques them.

This conference is dedicated to the cinematic projection of new dynamics of landscape and body in the silent film era. The aim is to provide a broad overview of popular cultural stagings of the relationship between landscape, body and technology. How are new landscape forms and body movements created and integrated in technological configurations and contexts of film culture? We want to explore both cinematic and technological developments in landscapes as well as in the film industry (e.g. developments in studio design and outdoor cinematography). We therefore encourage re-readings of the genre and studio cinema that deal with transnational (co-)productions and the interplay between regional and global movements.

·         What role do structures of heights and depths play in the social tensions of the modern age? How do they negotiate relations between the familiar and the foreign, urban centers and nature, (artistic) craftsmanship and technology?

·         To what extent do silent films create a nostalgia for nature through a staging of landscapes that no longer exist in the age of technologizing nature and heightened mountain tourism? How does the legacy of the sublime, picturesque and pastoral intertwine with the urban popular culture that was booming at the turn of the century?

·         How does silent cinema position landscape and physical culture in the conflicting fields of circus, dance culture and vaudeville, studio cinema and stardom, working-class culture and (strength) sports, tourism and nationalism, exoticism and cosmopolitanism?

·         How are landscapes and body culture explored and experimented with in popular film genres and formats such as slapstick comedy, serial cinema and animated film?  How do expedition and exploration films, cultural and colonial films stage the relationship between landscape and body?

Organization:

The conference is a collaborative event of the research projects "Trenker - (Dis)Kontinuitäten einer transalpinen Medienmarke" (German Research Foundation) and "Delocating Mountains: Cinematic Landscapes and the Alpine Model” (Austrian Science Fund). It will be held from Thursday to Saturday and include one evening film screening; the other two evenings will be open. We aim to make this a sustainable and low-key event in which presentations and discussions take center stage and participants are present on all days. Title proposals with an abstract (approx. 500 words) and a short biography (approx. 150 words) in German or English, including e-mail address and website, should be submitted in one PDF document by March 31, 2024 to Theresia Klemm: t.klemm@stud.uni-heidelberg.de

In den historischen Neuverhandlungen von Natur und Kultur nimmt die Moderne eine besondere Stellung ein, bei der sich das Verhältnis von Körper, Technik und Landschaft dynamisiert. Technisch-ökonomische und imperiale Raumerschließungen zeigen sich u.a. in Form des aufkommenden Massentourismus, der zunehmenden Industrialisierung ländlicher Zonen und einer generellen Zunahme von Mobilität. Kino nimmt in diesen Prozessen nicht nur eine dokumentierende, sondern auch eine aktiv gestaltende und bisweilen kritische Rolle ein. In diesem Sinn widmet sich die Tagung der filmischen Projektion neuer Dynamiken von Landschaft und Körper in der Stummfilmzeit.  

Es soll ein breiter Blick auf populärkulturelle Inszenierungen des Verhältnisses von Landschaft, Körper und Technik geworfen werden. Dabei können unterschiedliche Formen von Höhen- und Tiefenstrukturen im Zentrum stehen. Wie werden neue Landschaftsformen und Körperbewegungen in technologischen Komplexen und Kontexten der Filmkultur entworfen und integriert? Damit sollen sowohl filmische als auch technologische Entwicklungen in der Landschaft als auch in der Filmindustrie angesprochen werden (z.B. Entwicklungen im Studiodesign und der Außenkinematographie) angesprochen werden. Wir begrüßen in diesem Sinn Relektüren des Genre- und Studiokinos, die sich mit transnationalen (Ko-) Produktionen und dem Spannungsfeld zwischen regionalen und globalen Bewegungen auseinandersetzen. Folgende Themen und Fragen will die Tagung ansprechen:  

·         Welche Rolle nehmen Höhen- und Tiefenstrukturen in gesellschaftlichen Spannungsfeldern der Moderne ein? Wie verhandeln sie Relationen zwischen Eigenem und Fremden, Stadt und Natur, (Kunst-) Handwerk und Technisierung?  

·         Inwiefern gestalten Stummfilme eine Naturnostalgie im Sinn einer Inszenierung von Landschaften, die es im Zeitalter der Technisierung und Touristisierung von Höhenlandschaften nicht mehr gibt? Wie wird das Erbe des Erhabenen, Pittoresken und Pastoralen mit der an der Jahrhundertwende boomenden urbanen Populärkultur verschränkt?  

·         Wie verortet das frühe Kino Landschaft und Körperkultur im Spannungsfeld von Zirkus, Tanzkultur und Variété, Studiokino und Starkult, Arbeiterkultur und (Kraft-) Sport, Tourismus und Nationalismus, Exotismus und Kosmopolitismus?  

·         Wie werden Landschaft und Körperkultur in populären Filmgenres und -formaten wie der Slapstickkomödie, dem Serienkino und dem Animationsfilm explorativ und experimentell verhandelt? Wie inszenieren Expeditions-, Explorations-, Kultur- und Kolonialfilme das Verhältnis von Landschaft und Körper?  

Organisation:  Die Tagung findet im Rahmen des DFG Projekts „Trenker - (Dis-)Kontinuitäten einer transalpinen Medienmarke“ und des FWF Projekts „Delocating Mountains: Cinematic Landscapes and the Alpine Model“ statt. Die Tagung dauert von Donnerstag bis Samstag. Es ist ein Abendevent im Kino vorgesehen, die anderen beiden Abende sind frei. Die Veranstaltung soll möglichst nachhaltig und entschleunigt ablaufen, d.h. auch, dass neben den Vorträgen die Diskussion im Mittelpunkt steht und die Teilnehmenden an allen Tagen präsent sind. Titelvorschläge sind mit einem Abstract (ca. 500 Wörter) und Kurzbiografie (ca. 150 Wörter) auf Deutsch oder Englisch unter Angabe von E-Mail-Adresse und Website im gleichen PDF-Dokument bis zum 31.03.24 bei Theresia Klemmeinzureichen: t.klemm@stud.uni-heidelberg.de.
