GSA 2024 Seminar - Interplanetary Perspectives: Cosmic Fictions and Figurations of Other Worlds, Atlanta
We seek participants for a proposed seminar at the upcoming 48th Annual Conference of the German Studies Association, to be held September 26-29, 2024, in Atlanta, Georgia.
Application Deadline: February 23, 2024
Interplanetary Perspectives: Cosmic Fictions and Figurations of Other Worlds
multiplicity of worlds in early German aesthetic theory (Baumgarten, Bodmer, Breitinger); the connection of the marvelous to the extraterrestrial;
points of contact between science fiction and scientific fictions;
visualizations of worlds that problematize the human perspective (e.g. figures of “planetrise”; perspectival distortions in landscape painting);
reconceptions of alienation as a productive form of defamiliarization;
texts that unsettle earth as home or as unified entity.
Format: Participants will propose texts suitable to the theme for discussion, along with a brief written introduction (~750 wds.) that explains the text’s relevance to the seminar’s guiding questions. Participants will be responsible for guiding the discussion of their text. One possible outcome of the seminar could be an anthology of German-language works on other worlds and other planets (copyright permitting).
Applications must be submitted via the GSA portal by February 23, 2024. Applicants must be members of the GSA to apply. For more information on the application process, see here.
