The Department of German at Georgetown University invites applications for our summer study abroad program in the historical city of Trier, Germany. The program is open to German learners of any institution who have completed at least one year (6 credits) of German. The 5-week program will run June 1–July 6, 2024.

During the program, students take classes at the University of Trier, an institution with which Georgetown’s Department of German has partnered for over half a century. Courses include Intensive Intermediate and Advanced German, Business German, and other upper-level courses, including a Service Learning Colloquium that combines working with clients of the Caritas, reflective engagement, and academic research. Courses are taught by Georgetown faculty and local instructors in Trier. (Details on courses and the program can be found here.)

In addition to classroom instruction, there are many opportunities to expand language abilities and cross-cultural knowledge. Field trips have included visits to sites of artistic and historical interest in the Trier area as well as longer excursions to places such as Heidelberg, the romantic Burg Eltz, the European Court in Luxembourg, and the Rhine River valley. Program participants have full access to the University of Trier's campus, and are also eligible and encouraged to join campus activities and organizations with local student activities (swim meets, horseback riding clubs, and various marathon events), thereby providing opportunities to get to know locals and practice speaking German. Participants' exposure to German language and culture will be further maximized by living with a German family for the duration of the program.

Interested students should contact Prof. Joe Cunningham at joe.cunningham@georgetown.edu with questions and for instructions on how to apply. The application deadline is February 1, 2024.
