    This Report analyzes the impacts of population ageing on the Finnish economy and the possibilities to avoid its negative effects by increasing net migration. Our calculations show that a yearly net migration of 44,000 persons is needed to stabilize the size of the birth cohorts and the labor force with the current age and gender structure of net migration. The reason for a such high number is the projected low total fertility rate. As a baseline for our economic analysis, we consider future net migration of 15,000 persons, also projected by Statistics Finland. We utilize in our numerical calculations a dynamic general equilibrium model, which provides, e.g., the change in investments induced by the additional migration. The calculations require many assumptions related, for example, to the educational level and the use of social services of the immigrants. This means that the economic results must be considered as approximate. The results indicate that the assumed immigration would have large positive effects on the economic growth and especially on the fiscal sustainability.

    This brief provides descriptive evidence on completion of multiple higher education degrees in Finland. In the year 2020, there were altogether 7,100 individuals enrolling in higher education who already had higher education degrees. A quarter of them already had more than one higher education degree. The share of those with prior degrees participating in higher education has been increasing sharply during the past two decades. In the year 2020, ten percent of all new students in higher education had already completed higher education previously. The most common education choice among these students was the field of Health and Welfare in Universities of Applied Sciences. According to the analysis, students with prior degrees took almost as long to complete the degree when compared to those who were completing their first degree. Women and those whose mother tongue is Finnish are vastly over-presented among those completing multiple degrees. Additionally, these students are performing fairly well in the labor market before returning to higher education. Completing multiple degrees does not lead to higher income or better employment even in the medium term. There is a drop in the labor market outcomes following the new enrollment in higher education; however, they bounce back to their previous level in a few years. After that, the labor market performance follows a very similar trend to what it was before enrollment.

    This project investigated how register data on daily working hours and hospital patients can be used to measure the workload of healthcare personnel and to study its relationship with different work features. We used econometric analysis to measure the average labor requirement of different patient mixes in hospital wards. The data was used to analyze the overall difficulty of working days and it was then compared to the available nursing workforce. Finally, we assessed the effects of variation in the workload on well-being at work. We found that the variation in workload was related to surprising changes in work and in the availability of employees. The risk of short sick leave increased over the next week due to the high workload. We also examined the interactions between workload and the working time features for work shift planning.

Instead, after the early 2022, more obvious change has already been in the sourcing of materials and parts. They are sourced from more countries than before. However, at least so far, at the aggregate level we do not observe that companies have directed their purchases to the home country more than before. In any case, the disruptions experienced in global value chains have shown that their functionality is no longer taken for granted.

    The decline of working age population makes it difficult to find employees. In this report we analyze the evolution of immigrant employment in Finland and the fiscal impact of immigration as well as the effect on the labor market. We show that the number of employed immigrants as well as immigrants' employment rate in Finland has increased. We review the economic impacts of immigration. We show that the fiscal impact of immigration depends heavily on the characteristics of immigrants and the time of immigration and therefore no general conclusions can be made on the economic impact. However, we show that full-time employees pay more taxes than receive direct income transfers and therefore their direct fiscal impact is positive. This is true also for employees employed at the lowest pay grades in the collective agreements.

    Merja Salonen Di Giorgio is a painter who explores the layeredness of history and the traces left by humans in our cultural heritage. Roihupelto - Pompeii is a series of paintings featuring two places that hold personal significance for the artist: a 1970s semi-industrial precinct in east Helsinki and the ancient city of Pompeii on the slopes of Mt. Vesuvius. The paintings were inspired by the dialogue emerging between these two places which, upon closer examination, have surprisingly much in common. Salonen Di Giorgio examines her theme through the lens of loss, from a future perspective - looking back after irreversible change and destruction have already occurred. The text is authored by architect and visual artist Anu Kaisa Koponen, who reflects on the connections between the paintings and architecture. Her essay is accompanied by art historian Synnöve Malmström's interview with the artist, which takes an in-depth look at how the paintings came into being

    Volker von Boninin valokuvanäyttely vie katseen vuosikymmenten takaiseen Helsinkiin. Retrospektiiviseen näyttelyyn on koottu kaupunginmuseon kokoelmista paitsi kuvaajan tunnetuimpia ikonisiksi muodostuneita Helsinki-kuvia mutta myös harvemmin nähtyjä otoksia. Von Bonin on tunnettu humanistisena valokuvaajana, jonka kuvissa korostuvat tavallisten ihmisten arjen hetket ja kaupunkimiljöö. Lisäksi hän ikuisti runsaasti vanhoja rakennuksia ja maisemia. Volker von Bonin (1924–2006) oli taidokas Helsingin kuvaaja, jonka valokuvat ovat nykyään henkilöä tunnetumpia. Von Bonin asettui pysyvästi Suomeen 1950-luvulla saatuaan paikan valokuvaajana painotalo Tilgmann Oy:llä. Töiden ohessa hän tallensi Helsinkiä ja sen ihmisiä. Muutaman vuosikymmenen aikana von Boninin käsissä syntyi tuhansia valokuvia ja parikymmentä valokuvakirjaa Suomesta ja sen pääkaupungista. Näyttelyn avautumisen yhteydessä Helsingin kaupunginmuseo ja Kustannusosakeyhtiö Parvs julkaisevat yhteistyössä Volker von Boninin valokuvia sisältävän elämäkerran, jonka on kirjoittanut valokuvahistorioitsija Yki Hytönen. Näyttelyn on tuottanut kaupunginmuseon kuvakokoelmien intendentti Tuomas Myrén ja näyttelysuunnittelusta vastaa Osmo Leppälä
