    Die Lebens- und Erfahrungsbedingungen zu Beginn des 21. Jahrhunderts sind zunehmend gekennzeichnet von Aufmerksamkeitsproblemen, Überreizung und Stress. Gleichzeitig sind wir überall mit Körperbildern konfrontiert, die von uns die Zurichtung und Anpassung unseres Leibes an die Bedingungen der Hochleitungsgesellschaft verlangen. Der Philosophie werden diese Selbstverhältnisse selten zum Thema, auch wenn der Schnittpunkt aller menschlichen Erfahrung wie auch der Ausgangspunkt allen Handelns der eigene Körper ist. In der philosophischen Tradition wird der lebendige Körper, wenn überhaupt, so in der Regel nur ex negativo thematisiert: als Gefängnis der Seele, Fessel des Geistes, Ursache von Ablenkung und Zerstreuung oder, wie bei Kant, als Quelle der Melancholie. Der amerikanische Philosoph und Kulturtheoretiker Richard Shusterman arbeitet demgegenüber seit den neunziger Jahren an einem philosophischen Projekt, das er Somästhetik nennt und das den lebendigen Körper (soma) ins Zentrum der Theoriebildung stellt. In der Tradition des Pragmatismus stehend, besteht Shusterman auf der grundlegenden Bedeutung des Somatischen, der Wahrnehmung durch bzw. mit Hilfe des Körpers sowie seiner sensorischen Erfahrungen für ein im philosophischen Sinne ethisches und gutes Leben. Jenseits ontologischer Leib-Seele-Debatten plädiert Shusterman für eine Kultivierung des somatischen Bewußtseins und der Achtsamkeit gegenüber dem lebendigen und empfindenden Körper. Dabei ist die Aufmerksamkeit für Körperliches nicht solipsistisch gedacht: Ästhetische Wahrnehmung und Gestaltung entfalten sich stets im Bezug auf den Anderen und die Gesellschaft. In diesem Buch entwickelt Shusterman seine Theorie in Auseinandersetzung mit sechs PhilosophInnen des 20. Jahrhunderts, in deren Denken der Körper eine Rolle spielt, nämlich M. Foucault, M. Merleau-Ponty, S. de Beauvoir, L. Wittgenstein, W. James und J. Dewey.

    This book provides a richly rewarding vision of the burgeoning interdisciplinary field of somaesthetics. Composed of fourteen wide-ranging but finely integrated essays by Richard Shusterman, the originator of the field, Thinking through the Body explains the philosophical foundations of somaesthetics and applies its insights to central issues in ethics, education, cultural politics, consciousness studies, sexuality and the arts. Integrating Western philosophy, cognitive science and somatic methodologies with classical Asian theories of body, mind and action, these essays probe the nature of somatic existence and the role of body consciousness in knowledge, memory and behavior. Deploying somaesthetic perspectives to analyze key aesthetic concepts (such as style and the sublime), he offers detailed studies of embodiment in drama, dance, architecture and photography. The volume also includes somaesthetic exercises for the classroom and explores the ars erotica as an art of living.

    Die Lebens- und Erfahrungsbedingungen zu Beginn des 21. Jahrhunderts sind zunehmend gekennzeichnet von Aufmerksamkeitsproblemen, Überreizung und Stress. Gleichzeitig sind wir überall mit Körperbildern konfrontiert, die von uns die Zurichtung und Anpassung unseres Leibes an die Bedingungen der Hochleitungsgesellschaft verlangen. Der Philosophie werden diese Selbstverhältnisse selten zum Thema, auch wenn der Schnittpunkt aller menschlichen Erfahrung wie auch der Ausgangspunkt allen Handelns der eigene Körper ist. In der philosophischen Tradition wird der lebendige Körper, wenn überhaupt, so in der Regel nur ex negativo thematisiert: als Gefängnis der Seele, Fessel des Geistes, Ursache von Ablenkung und Zerstreuung oder, wie bei Kant, als Quelle der Melancholie. Der amerikanische Philosoph und Kulturtheoretiker Richard Shusterman arbeitet demgegenüber seit den neunziger Jahren an einem philosophischen Projekt, das er Somästhetik nennt und das den lebendigen Körper (soma) ins Zentrum der Theoriebildung stellt. In der Tradition des Pragmatismus stehend, besteht Shusterman auf der grundlegenden Bedeutung des Somatischen, der Wahrnehmung durch bzw. mit Hilfe des Körpers sowie seiner sensorischen Erfahrungen für ein im philosophischen Sinne ethisches und gutes Leben. Jenseits ontologischer Leib-Seele-Debatten plädiert Shusterman für eine Kultivierung des somatischen Bewußtseins und der Achtsamkeit gegenüber dem lebendigen und empfindenden Körper. Dabei ist die Aufmerksamkeit für Körperliches nicht solipsistisch gedacht: Ästhetische Wahrnehmung und Gestaltung entfalten sich stets im Bezug auf den Anderen und die Gesellschaft. In diesem Buch entwickelt Shusterman seine Theorie in Auseinandersetzung mit sechs PhilosophInnen des 20. Jahrhunderts, in deren Denken der Körper eine Rolle spielt, nämlich M. Foucault, M. Merleau-Ponty, S. de Beauvoir, L. Wittgenstein, W. James und J. Dewey

    Die Lebens- und Erfahrungsbedingungen zu Beginn des 21. Jahrhunderts sind zunehmend gekennzeichnet von Aufmerksamkeitsproblemen, Überreizung und Stress. Gleichzeitig sind wir überall mit Körperbildern konfrontiert, die von uns die Zurichtung und Anpassung unseres Leibes an die Bedingungen der Hochleitungsgesellschaft verlangen. Der Philosophie werden diese Selbstverhältnisse selten zum Thema, auch wenn der Schnittpunkt aller menschlichen Erfahrung wie auch der Ausgangspunkt allen Handelns der eigene Körper ist. In der philosophischen Tradition wird der lebendige Körper, wenn überhaupt, so in der Regel nur ex negativo thematisiert: als Gefängnis der Seele, Fessel des Geistes, Ursache von Ablenkung und Zerstreuung oder, wie bei Kant, als Quelle der Melancholie. Der amerikanische Philosoph und Kulturtheoretiker Richard Shusterman arbeitet demgegenüber seit den neunziger Jahren an einem philosophischen Projekt, das er Somästhetik nennt und das den lebendigen Körper (soma) ins Zentrum der Theoriebildung stellt. In der Tradition des Pragmatismus stehend, besteht Shusterman auf der grundlegenden Bedeutung des Somatischen, der Wahrnehmung durch bzw. mit Hilfe des Körpers sowie seiner sensorischen Erfahrungen für ein im philosophischen Sinne ethisches und gutes Leben. Jenseits ontologischer Leib-Seele-Debatten plädiert Shusterman für eine Kultivierung des somatischen Bewußtseins und der Achtsamkeit gegenüber dem lebendigen und empfindenden Körper. Dabei ist die Aufmerksamkeit für Körperliches nicht solipsistisch gedacht: Ästhetische Wahrnehmung und Gestaltung entfalten sich stets im Bezug auf den Anderen und die Gesellschaft. In diesem Buch entwickelt Shusterman seine Theorie in Auseinandersetzung mit sechs PhilosophInnen des 20. Jahrhunderts, in deren Denken der Körper eine Rolle spielt, nämlich M. Foucault, M. Merleau-Ponty, S. de Beauvoir, L. Wittgenstein, W. James und J. Dewey.
