    Composite and multiple-text manuscripts are traditionally studied for their individual texts, but recent trends in codicology have paved the way for a more comprehensive approach: Manuscripts are unique artefacts which reveal how they were produced and used as physical objects.

     

    While multiple-text manuscripts codicologically are to be considered as production units, i.e. they were originally planned and realized in order to carry more than one text, composites consist of formerly independent codicological units and were put together at a later stage with intentions that might be completely different from those of its original parts. Both sub-types of manuscripts are still sometimes called "miscellanies", a term relating to the texts only. The codicological difference is important for reconstructing why and how these manuscripts which in many cases resemble (or contain) a small library were produced and used.

     

    Contributions on the manuscript cultures of China, India, Africa, the Islamic world and European traditions lead not only to the conclusion that "one-volume libraries" have been produced in many manuscript cultures, but allow also for the identification of certain types of uses.

This volume contains a series of thirteen articles devoted to fakes and forgeries of written artefacts from the beginnings of writing in Mesopotamia to modern China. The studies emphasise the subtle distinctions conveyed by an established vocabulary relating to the reproduction of ancient artefacts and production of artefacts claiming to be ancient: from copies, replicas and imitations to fakes and forgeries. Fakes are often a response to a demand from the public or scholarly milieu, or even both. The motives behind their production may be economic, political, religious or personal - aspiring to fame or simply playing a joke. Fakes may be revealed by combining the study of their contents, codicological, epigraphic and palaeographic analyses, and scientific investigations. However, certain famous unsolved cases still continue to defy technology today, no matter how advanced it is. Nowadays, one can find fakes in museums and private collections alike; they abound on the antique market, mixed with real artefacts that have often been looted. The scientific community's attitude to such objects calls for ethical reflection

The codex Parisino-petropolitanus is one of the earliest witnesses of the handwritten transmission of the Qurʾanic text which has survived to this day. The various fragments which were part of the original manuscript are scattered among various collections; once put together, they provide a unique picture of the state of the text during the 7th century (orthography and textual peculiarities) and of the circumstances in which the canonical version as we know it today took shape physically. The present study, first of its kind, paves the way for a more accurate understanding of the beginning of Islam, based on a significant document, and of the evolution of the Qurʾan during that period. Le codex Parisino-petropolitanus est l'un des plus anciens témoins de la transmission manuscrite du texte du Coran qui aient été conservés. Ses différents fragments sont dispersés entre plusieurs collections; une fois mis ensemble, ils donnent un aperçu unique sur l'état du texte au 7e siècle (orthographe et particularités textuelles) et sur les conditions dans lesquelles s'est organisée matériellement la constitution de la version canonique telle que nous la connaissons.     L’étude porte sur une période phare de l’histoire du livre islamique. Elle met au jour un grand nombre de manuscrits inédits et propose une relecture d’autres manuscrits célèbres en examinant l’ensemble de la production dans ses différentes phases et différents niveaux. L’étude propose en outre une réflexion sur plusieurs problèmes importants de l’histoire de la calligraphie et du livre islamique d’une manière générale, comme celui du calligraphe Yāqūt al-Musta‘ṣimī, sa vie, sa carrière, son œuvre et son apport à l’histoire de la calligraphie, ainsi que son école ; ou le problème de l’élaboration du concept des « six styles ». Elle considère l’évolution du rapport entre le Mécène et l’Artiste à partir des sources historiques et d’une analyse originale, tant du point de vue de la paléographie que de l’histoire de l’art, des manuscrits eux-mêmes, dans le but de sonder l’ancienneté de certaines pratiques et de mieux évaluer les changements qui s’opèrent à l’époque mongole qui apparaît comme la période de la maturation de l’esthétique classique du livre islamique The study deals with an important period of the history of the book in Islam. It brings to light numerous unknown manuscripts and proposes a new reading of other famous manuscripts by examining the successive phases and different levels of the overall production. Moreover, it offers a reflection about several problematic issues of the history of Islamic calligraphy and the Islamic book in general, such as the issue of the life, career, works and contribution of Yāqūt al-Musta‘ṣimī and his school to the history of Arabic calligraphy or the question of the elaboration of the concept of the « six styles ». It considers the evolution of the relationship between the Patron and the Artist through the historical sources and an original analysis of the scriptures and decorations of the manuscripts themselves in order to sound the ancientness of some practices and better evaluate the changes that occur during the Mongol period which prooves to be the period of the maturation of the classical aesthetic of the Islamic book

    The universal practice of selecting and excerpting, summarizing and canonizing, arranging and organizing texts and visual signs, either in carefully dedicated types of manuscripts or not, is common to all manuscript cultures. Determined by intellectual or practical needs, this process is never neutral in itself. The resulting proximity and juxtaposition of previously distant contents, challenge previous knowledge and trigger further developments. With a vast selection of highly representative case studies – from India, Islamic Asia and Spain to Ethiopian cultures, from Ancient Christian to Coptic, and Medieval European domains – this volume deals with manuscripts planned or growing and resulting in time to comprise ‘more than one’. Whatever their contents – the natural world and related recipes, astronomical tables or personal notes, documentary, religious and even highly revered holy texts – codicological and textual features of these manuscripts reveal how similar needs received different answers in varying contexts and times.
