This Anniversary Edition captures the typeface, design and layout of the original edition supervised by Whitman himself. Today's readers get a sense of the "ur-text" of Leaves of Grass, the first version of this historic volume, before Whitman made many revisions of both format and style. The volume also boasts an afterword by Whitman authority David Reynolds, in which he discusses the 1855 edition in its social and cultural contexts: its background, its reception, and its contributions to literary history. Intro -- Contents -- Leaves of Grass -- Afterword -- Reviews of the 1855 Edition of Leaves of Grass -- Ralph Waldo Emerson's Letter to Walt Whitman -- Walt Whitman's Letter to Ralph Waldo Emerson.

How nineteenth-century "disciplines of attention" anticipated the contemporary concern with mindfulness and being "spiritual but not religious"Today, we're driven to distraction, our attention overwhelmed by the many demands upon it-most of which emanate from our beeping and blinking digital devices. This may seem like a decidedly twenty-first-century problem, but, as Caleb Smith shows in this elegantly written, meditative work, distraction was also a serious concern in American culture two centuries ago. In Thoreau's Axe, Smith explores the strange, beautiful archives of the nineteenth-century attention revival-from a Protestant minister's warning against frivolous thoughts to Thoreau's reflections on wakefulness at Walden Pond. Smith examines how Americans came to embrace attention, mindfulness, and other ways of being "spiritual but not religious," and how older Christian ideas about temptation and spiritual devotion endure in our modern ideas about distraction and attention.Smith explains that nineteenth-century worries over attention developed in response to what were seen as the damaging mental effects of new technologies and economic systems. A "wandering mind," once diagnosed, was in need of therapy or rehabilitation. Modeling his text after nineteenth-century books of devotion, Smith offers close readings of twenty-eight short passages about attention. Considering social reformers who designed moral training for the masses, religious leaders who organized Christian revivals, and spiritual seekers like Thoreau who experimented with regimens of simplified living and transcendental mysticism, Smith shows how disciplines of attention became the spiritual exercises of a distracted age

As he was turning forty, Walt Whitman wrote twelve poems in a small handmade book he entitled "Live Oak, With Moss." The poems were intensely private reflections on his attraction to and affection for other men. They were also Whitman's most adventurous explorations of the theme of same-sex love, composed decades before the word "homosexual" came into use. Whitman never published the cycle. Instead he cut them up, rearranged them, and hid them in the "Calamus" cluster of poems in the 1860 edition of Leaves of Grass. Selznick has been greatly influenced by Whitman and has created more than 100 pages of original images that form a visual narrative around his work which provide a stirring interpretation. This transporting tour de force presents Whitman like never before and will be beloved by Selznick's myriad fans as well as poetry lovers everywhere. An afterword by Professor Karen Karbiener illuminates the story of Whitman's enigmatic cluster of poems, provides keys for interpreting their meanings, and highlights their contemporary significance"--

"This book is the first to offer a comprehensive selection of Walt Whitman's Civil War poetry and prose with a full commentary on each work. One of the most distinguished critics in Whitman Studies, Ed Folsom, and one of the nation's most prominent writers and literary figures, Christopher Merrill, carry on a dialog with Whitman (and with each other), selection by selection, as they invite readers to enter into the conversation about how Whitman's writing about the Civil War develops, shifts, and manifests itself in different genres throughout the four years of the war. Folsom and Merrill go beyond Whitman's well-known war poems in his Drum-Taps and examine with equal care his Civil War prose writing in Memoranda During the War and in his personal letters. The book offers forty selections of Whitman's war writings, each followed by Folsom's detailed critical examination of the work and then by Merrill's writer's afterword, suggesting broader contexts for thinking about the selection. The Civil War initially shattered Whitman's confidence in the future of the nation he invested so much faith in, but he gradually reconciled himself to the idea that the war ultimately would strengthen the reconstructed United States and would serve as the compost out of which a great democratic future would be built. Folsom and Merrill offer a commentary that takes to heart Whitman's faith in an emerging democratic readership. The real democratic reader, Whitman said, "must himself or herself construct indeed the poem, argument, history, metaphysical essay-the text furnishing the hints, the clue, the start or frame-work," because what is needed for democracy to flourish is "a nation of supple and athletic minds." This book-like our previous one on Whitman's "Song of Myself"-sets out to model this active kind of reading and to encourage both seasoned and new readers of Whitman's war writings to enter into the challenging and exhilarating mode of talking back to Whitman, of engaging him, arguing with him, learning from him, and articulating ways that his responses to America's defining traumatic event continue to speak in surprising new ways to present-day America and to the world beyond America"--

"Scholars and biographers often mention Walt Whitman's short stint in New Orleans-three months in the spring of 1848-as a crucial moment of literary and personal development, with some of the author's most celebrated poems showing distinct influences of the city. Working for the local newspaper the Daily Crescent, the poet who was still seven years away from publishing the first edition of his Leaves of Grass would spend his afternoons, as he did in New York, strolling through the multiracial city to absorb and then write about his impressions. While Whitman's southern sojourn has become a core component of the narrative around the poet, his actual writings produced in the Crescent City have remained relatively obscure. Walt Whitman's New Orleans is the first book to collect his writings about the city, appearing more than 150 years after his trip south. Edited by Whitman expert Stefan Schöberlein, the volume builds on cutting-edge research that uncovers a previously unknown collection of short prose sketches that Whitman wrote for the Crescent after he left New Orleans. The result is a volume of humorous glimpses of city life steeped in the tropes and attitudes of the 1840s. These short pieces form a collage of impressions by a "pedestrian," as Whitman identifies himself in one piece, who provides interested readers with what he variously called "Peeps," "Sketches," or "Glimpses" culled from his visits to the French Quarter, the St. Louis Hotel, Lafayette Square, and other central locales. Organized around the complete run of a humorous series titled "Sketches of the Sidewalks and Levee," Walt Whitman's New Orleans pairs his writings with nineteenth-century illustrations that capture views of the city and caricatures of the characters that populate his prose renderings. The volume also offers new discoveries about the Crescent staff and contextual information about the social, political, and cultural currents circulating throughout antebellum New Orleans, including their impact on Whitman's own evolving beliefs"--
