Dit vergeten is "de zwarte muur waartegen zich enkele motieven vertonen, en het is dankzij deze zwarte muur dat de schimmen geprojecteerd, verlengd, uitvergroot kunnen worden". (Stefan Hertmans) Herinneren en vergeten gaan hand in hand, ook in de geschiedschrijving, al zullen vermoedelijk weinig geschiedschrijvers hun eigen werk typeren als het orchestreren van het vergeten. Wat voor patronen doen zich voor in de verhouding tussen herinneren en vergeten? Hoe produceert het vergeten een bepaald beeld van de theatergeschiedenis en wat voor beeld is dat? Welke rol spelen zg. crises in de manier waarop de geschiedenis van theater geschreven wordt, wat is de rol van mythes en schandalen? Welke makers, voorstellingen, ontwikkelingen etc. die nu onzichtbaar deel zijn van de zwarte muur waartegen de geschiedenis verschijnt, verdienen een plaats in die geschiedenis, en waarom? Zijn alternatieve strategieën denkbaar (en wenselijk) voor de manier waarop geschiedenis 'gecomponeerd' wordt? Wat is de relatie tussen geschiedschrijving en repertoire?     Music; Stage presentations; History of Amsterdam In de zeventiende eeuw ging vrijwel iedere toneelvoorstelling gepaard met muziek. Er werd niet alleen gemusiceerd tussen de bedrijven, maar ook in het toneelstuk zelf. Muziek diende als achtergrond en versiering en was functioneel geïntegreerd in de handeling van het drama. Uit de rekeningen van de Amsterdamse Schouwburg blijkt dat men professionele musici in dienst had; daarnaast werd er gezongen en gedanst door de acteurs. In navolging van buitenlandse toneelmuziekstudies wordt in dit boek voor het eerst uitvoerig aandacht besteed aan de zeventiende-eeuwse theatermuziek in de Nederlanden. Centraal staat de toneeldichter Jan Harmensz Krul, die de muziek op vakkundige manier in zijn toneelstukken verweefde en die in 1634 de Amsterdamse Musyck-kamer oprichtte - een stichting die geheel gewijd was aan het samengaan van poëzie en muziek op het toneel. Aan de hand van vijf karakteristieke muzikale scènes uit zijn werk (de wachterscène, gevangenisscène, serenade, offerscène en slaapscène) wordt een beeld geschetst van de toenmalige Amsterdamse toneelmuziekpraktijk. Zulke muzikale scènes waren ook geliefd bij andere toneeldichters, in binnen- en buitenland. Zij hadden voor het publiek een signaalfunctie: het waren direct herkenbare situaties, ijkpunten in het drama, die standaard met muziek werden geassocieerd. Dichters varieerden hierop naar hartelust. Voor toneelschrijver en toeschouwer waren die stereotiepe muzikale scènes wat muziek was voor de personages in de toneelstukken: een effectief middel om te manipuleren - een perfecte verleiding, van oog, oor en hart.

    History, geography, and auxiliary disciplines; Dutch and Flemish literature Vieringen ter ere van het Huis van Bourgondië-Habsburg vormden in de vroegmoderne Vlaamse en Brabantse steden een belangrijke aanleiding voor de productie en opvoering van literaire teksten. Ze droegen daardoor in belangrijke mate bij aan de bijzondere ontwikkeling van het stedelijke literaire leven. Op hun beurt waren toneelstukken, gedichten en liederen bepalend voor het verloop, de werking en de betekenis van het stedelijke vorstenfeest. Deze publicatie onderzoekt voor het eerst de interactie tussen dergelijke vorstenfeesten en literatuur binnen een breed geografisch en tijdskader. Speciale aandacht gaat uit naar de kamers van retorica, die zich bezighielden met het schrijven en opvoeren van teksten en nauw betrokken waren bij het organiseren van vorstenfeesten. Hun stempel op deze vieringen blijkt groter en meer divers te zijn geweest dan tot op heden werd aangenomen. Voor vorst en stad beweegt zich op het snijvlak van politieke, literatuur- en cultuurgeschiedenis. Het toont aan hoe nauw literatuur en politiek in de vroegmoderne Nederlandse steden met elkaar verweven waren. Voor vorst en stad is het vierde deel in de AUP-reeks over rederijkerskamers.     Dutch literature; Religion Gerard Zerbolt van Zutphen (1367-1398) behoort tot de vroege 'Moderne Devotie'. Zo noemde zich de beweging van 'vernieuwde innigheid' die rond 1375 in Deventer onder inspiratie van Geert Grote en Florens Radewijns ontstond. Zij ontwikkelden een hervormingsprogramma, waarin de geestelijke omvorming van de mens centraal stond. Als broeder van het gemene leven speelde Gerard Zerbolt hierin een prominente rol. Hij gaf leiding aan een intensieve boekproductie, ijverde voor kerkelijke erkenning van de broederschap en maakte zich haar charisma eigen. Zo schreef hij twee toonaangevende handboeken voor de geestelijke weg. Meer dan Grote en Radewijns legde Gerard Zerbolt de grondslag voor een eigen spiritualiteit van de Moderne Devotie. De spiritualibus ascensionibus was nog niet in modern Nederlands vertaald. Reeds de Middelnederlandse vertaling droeg de titel Geestelijke opklimmingen. Dit boek beschrijft de weg van de mens, die uit de ongelijkenis met zijn Schepper wil terugkeren tot de oorspronkelijke gelijkenis. Tegenover de ondeugden die mensen kunnen bezielen, plaatst Gerard Zerbolt als tegenkrachten de deugden. Zijn geschrift bevat alle elementen om ook ons als mensen van deze tijd te helpen tot een nieuw mensbeeld en een nieuwe visie op de samenleving te komen.

    Traditionally, the Netherlands has enjoyed being a test market for many ideas in the media. But over the last decade, progress has been severely hampered by lengthy discussions on the future structure of just one sector of media, namely public broadcasting via radio and television. The narrow approach results in a lot of paper, speeches and theories, but little in the way of definitive policy making. In a report to the government, published in February 2005, the Scientific Council for Government Policy (WRR) argued for very different approaches to policy making. The recommendations are not only much broader than "broadcasting"; they tackle the challenges of making robust policy from new angles. Instead of trying to repair the old compass, the approach has been to find new instruments to help policymakers navigate the stormy and often confusing waters ahead. Perhaps the problem in the Netherlands is not accepting the new media, but rather accepting that the role "old" media has undergone a paradigm shift. Since the bulk of the WRR findings were published in the Dutch language, this summary is intended to provide readers outside the Netherlands with an insight into the issues at stake - and the solutions suggested by the WRR. Sindsdien zijn processen van medezeggenschap, inspraak en coproductie min of meer ingeburgerd in ontwerp- en planningspraktijken. Het enthousiasme voor deze processen is aan wisselende invloeden onderhevig en participatie staat dus lang niet altijd centraal in de feitelijke beslissingsstromen. Dit boek documenteert deze golfbewegingen aan de hand van historische overzichten, gevalstudies, interviews en kritische reflecties. Daarbij wordt nagedacht over de rol van actoren, de kracht van het ontwerp en het belang van (de) politiek.     The linguistic relality in the Netherlands during the Golden Age was in fact one of multilingualism: so many languages and dialects were used. Nicoline van der Sijs and Marc van Oostendorp show how the emergence of the Dutch language can only be understood against this multilinguistic background. Taal was belangrijk in de Gouden Eeuw. Schrijvers, dichters, taalgeleerden en journalisten legden zelfbewust de basis voor wat het Standaardnederlands zou worden, een taal waarop iedereen even trots leek te zijn als op de nieuwe Republiek. Tegelijkertijd openden de Lage Landen zich voor de rest van de wereld, onder andere door de handel en het vroege kolonialisme, maar ook door belangstelling voor de ‘nieuwe’ kunsten uit Italië en Frankrijk. Bovendien kwamen door de grote welvaart heel veel migranten uit binnen- en buitenland naar Amsterdam.

    In ‘Een mooie mengelmoes’ laten Nicoline van der Sijs en Marc van Oostendorp zien dat het ontstaan van het Nederlands alleen kan worden begrepen tegen de achtergrond van al die talen en dialecten die er toen in de Lage Landen werden geschreven. De auteurs presenteren het eerste onderzoek naar de pas ontsloten schat van zeventiende-eeuwse kranten – Nederlandse drukkers zetten in dit eerste massamedium internationaal de toon – én ze laten zien hoe schrijvers buitenlandse modellen imiteerden. Maar dat deden in ‘zuiver’ Nederlands, en niet in een ‘mengelmoes’ van leenwoorden zoals die in het dagelijks leven werd gebruikt.

    During the First World War, the German occupier tried to split Belgium internally. This was done by pursuing a Flamenpolitik, a policy aimed at scaring the Flemish, or at least the Flemish movement, against Belgium. That worked, because a small number of Flemish supporters, the so-called activists, did indeed collaborate. From the late summer of 1914, Berlin in the occupied country would incessantly bombard the Flemish movement with a large-scale media campaign. The German services, supported by their Austrian allies, mainly made use of pamphlets and the written press, not only in Belgium but also in the neutral Netherlands. In the summer of 1915 activism was a fact: an anti-Belgian Flemish nationalism, the consequences of which have been felt to date, had seen the light of day. The propaganda underlying it was so ingenious and clever that it not only convinced contemporaries, but still misleads historians even more than a century later. It is a fine example of “fake news” avant la lettre. Tijdens de Eerste Wereldoorlog probeerde de Duitse bezetter België intern te splijten. Dat gebeurde door het voeren van een Flamenpolitik, een beleid dat erop gericht was de Vlamingen of in elk geval de Vlaamse beweging in het harnas te jagen tegen België. Dat lukte, want een klein deel Vlaamsgezinden, de zogenaamde activisten, collaboreerde inderdaad. Vanaf de nazomer van 1914 zou Berlijn in het bezette land de Vlaamse beweging onophoudelijk bestoken met een grootscheepse mediacampagne. De Duitse diensten, gesteund door hun Oostenrijkse bondgenoten, maakten daarbij vooral gebruik van vlugschriften en de geschreven pers, niet alleen in België maar ook in het neutrale Nederland. In de zomer van 1915 was het activisme een feit: een anti-Belgisch Vlaams-nationalisme, waarvan de gevolgen tot op heden voelbaar zijn, had het daglicht gezien. De propaganda die eraan ten grondslag lag was zó vernuftig en ingenieus dat ze niet alleen tijdgenoten overtuigde, maar zelfs meer dan een eeuw later nog steeds historici misleidt. In het contact tussen Noord- en Zuid-Europa – vaak beschouwd als gescheiden werelden – zijn taal en literatuur belangrijke bemiddelaars. Het Nederlands is in deze bundel vertrek-, aankomst- en ontmoetingspunt voor bijdragen over talige contrasten en literaire confrontaties tussen Noord en Zuid. Onderzoekers gevestigd in het Middellandse Zeegebied analyseren onder meer culturele ontmoetingen met de Griekse oudheid (Hugo Claus en Pasolini) en Japan (Cees Nooteboom en Bashō).     The requiem (or the death mass) is one of the oldest and longest surviving genres in Western music history. For hundreds of years it only existed in its original Gregorian guise, but from about 1450 many great composers were inspired to write of masterly new death masses Dies Irae introduces the reader to these masterpieces in an accessible way, without any prior musical knowledge being required.

     

    After an introduction to the meaning and structure of the text and music of the ancient Latin Mass for the Dead, a chronicle in three parts follows that guides the reader through the history of the requiem. In separate chapters, all the major and well-known requiems (including by Mozart, Brahms, Verdi, Fauré, Britten and Webber), as well as some less popular but equally poignant works (such as the requiems by Ockeghem, Schütz, Weill, Ligeti, Stravinsky and Zimmermann).

     

    Each requiem is discussed according to a fixed pattern, so that the reader can freely browse through different periods and compositions: first each work is situated music-historically, followed by a short discussion of each part separately. By linking the discussions to one reference recording per work, the reader can immediately test the explanation against listening practice.

     

    Under the direction of Pieter Bergé, and with the cooperation of Jan Christiaens, all contributions to 'Dies Irae. Chronicle of the Requiem' written by authors who are affiliated with the Musicology research unit of KU Leuven as teachers, researchers or alumnus. Het requiem (of de dodenmis) is een van de oudste en langst overlevende genres uit de westerse muziekgeschiedenis. Honderden jaren heeft het enkel bestaan in zijn oorspronkelijke gregoriaanse gedaante, maar vanaf ca. 1450 hebben heel wat grote componisten zich laten inspireren tot het schrijven van magistrale nieuwe dodenmissen. Dies Irae laat de lezer op toegankelijke wijze kennismaken met deze meesterwerken zonder dat muzikale voorkennis vereist is.

     

    Na een inleiding over de betekenis en structuur van de tekst en muziek van de aloude Latijnse dodenmis, volgt een kroniek in drie delen die de lezer door de geschiedenis van het requiem gidst. In aparte hoofdstukken komen alle grote en bekende requiems aan bod (onder meer van Mozart, Brahms, Verdi, Fauré, Britten en Webber), evenals enkele minder populaire maar minstens even aangrijpende werken (zoals de requiems van Ockeghem, Schütz, Weill, Ligeti, Stravinsky en Zimmermann).

     

    Elk requiem wordt volgens een vast stramien besproken, zodat de lezer vrijelijk kan grasduinen door verschillende perioden en composities: eerst wordt ieder werk muziekhistorisch gesitueerd, daarna volgt een korte bespreking van elk deel afzonderlijk. Door de besprekingen te koppelen aan één referentieopname per werk, kan de lezer de uitleg meteen ook aan de luisterpraktijk toetsen.

     

    Onder de leiding van Pieter Bergé, en met medewerking van Jan Christiaens werden alle bijdragen aan 'Dies Irae. Kroniek van het requiem' geschreven door auteurs die als docent, onderzoeker of alumnus verbonden zijn aan de onderzoekseenheid Musicologie van de KU Leuven.

Particular attention will be paid to the Dutch explorer Abel Tasman and the Dutch immigration wave of the 1950s. Through a discussion of the meeting house and meeting grounds, the relationships Maori maintain to the land will be considered. The vital role of the Treaty of Waitangi (1840) and its present-day repercussions will be looked at. Finally the role of taonga or cultural treasures embodying the ancestral identity of a Maori kin group in relation to particular lands and resources will be explained. Dit boek neemt de lezer mee op een reis langs de eerste Polynesische ontdekkers, hun ontmoetingen met de Europeanen en de daaropvolgende vestiging van Westerlingen. Bijzondere aandacht is er voor de ontdekkingsreiziger Abel Tasman en de stroom Nederlandse immigranten in de jaren '50.     The research project Beatrijs Internationaal brought together about a hundred literary translators and researchers in the field of historical and modern Dutch literature, translation studies and related disciplines, from twenty different language areas. The participants immersed themselves in questions about the international circulation and reception of the famous Middle Dutch legend of Our Lady, from its origins to our own time. Almost a hundred adaptations and translations of the Beatrijs-story were found, and new discoveries are still being made. The case of Beatrijs brought about new theoretical discussions, cooperation and exchange in the field of Dutch Studies, as is demonstrated by this volume. By means of diverse approaches the authors show how a literary text from the relatively small geographical area of the Dutch language can circulate both inside and outside its linguistic borders in different periods. With their wide spectrum of research questions, methodological approaches and selections of material, the contributions are a reflection of the richness of international Dutch Studies in the 21st century. Inspired by translation, adaptation and reception studies, this volume helps us to answer the question which characteristics of a particular text make it a likely candidate for crossing linguistic, geophysical, historical, and other borders. This volume is a contribution to the historiography of the export and dissemination of Dutch literature.

    A storm at sea, hanging cliffs, volcano eruptions at night, threatening thunderclouds over a desolate mountain landscape: all these phenomena incite both fear and pleasure, astonishment and fascination. We call them sublime, after the feeling of the sublime. In the eighteenth century the sublime became the exciting alternative to the beautiful. The concept has ancient roots, but branches out into French, British, German, and Dutch cultures. Stemming originally from rhetoric, in the course of the eighteenth century it became an aesthetic, philosophical and literary concept. In this study the history of the sublime is told for the first time in Dutch. This book focuses on Dutch contributions on the sublime, in the light of the international history of the concept of the sublime. From the earliest translations to the original ideas of Johannes Kinker and Willem Bilderdijk: the Dutch sublime reflects both the entwinement with the European Enlightenment and the specific nature of Dutch culture in the long eighteenth century. Een storm op zee, overhangende kliffen, nachtelijke vulkaanuitbarstingen, dreigende donderwolken boven een woest berglandschap: al deze verschijnselen boezemen tegelijk angst en genot, ontzetting en fascinatie in. We noemen ze subliem, naar het verheven gevoel dat ze oproepen. Het sublieme gold in de achttiende eeuw als het spannende alternatief voor het schone. Het begrip heeft antieke wortels, maar ook Franse, Engelse, Duitse, en Nederlandse vertakkingen. Oorspronkelijk een begrip uit de retorica groeide het in de achttiende eeuw uit tot een esthetisch, filosofisch en literair concept. In deze studie wordt voor het eerst de geschiedenis van het verhevene in het Nederlands verteld. Centraal in dit boek staan een aantal Nederlandse bijdragen over het verhevene, die hier worden gelezen in het kader van de internationale begripsgeschiedenis van het sublieme. Van de vroegste vertalingen tot de eigenzinnige ideeën van Johannes Kinker en Willem Bilderdijk: in het Nederlandse verhevene wordt zowel de verbondenheid met de Europese Verlichting als het bijzondere van de eigen cultuur in de lange achttiende eeuw weerspiegeld.

    The central theme of this issue is the singularity of general and comparative literary theory in the Low Countries. How do they combine insights from neighboring linguistic areas, more specifically the dominant French, English and German traditions? In what branches were and are Flemish and Dutch literary theorists specifically strong or innovative? Which theorists and critics were influential? The questions addressed here are meant to instigate a debate on the future of general and comparative literary theory in the Low countries. The issue consists of two parts: ‘The Text and its Limits’ focuses on intra-textual models and criticism, ‘Limits in Context’ looks at the impact and shape of trends and schools of literary studies in the Low Countries.

    Media Studies; Culture Het medialandschap is voortdurend in beweging. Vertrouwde indelingen als die in verschillende infrastructuren en in verschillende media als pers, televisie en radio verliezen meer hun betekenis voor zowel de gebruiker als het beleid. Klassieke instituties als het ochtend- en avondblad en de publieke omroep verkeren in zwaar weer als gevolg van explosief toegenomen aanbod, de soms moordende concurrentie en een steeds vluchtiger publiek dat veel oude loyaliteiten heeft laten varen. Internationalisering, commercialisering en digitalisering zijn slechts een paar van de kernontwikkelingen die de toekomst van het medialandschap bepalen. Deze dynamiek is het gevolg van technologische, economische en sociaal-culturele ontwikkelingen. Maar ook van het mediabeleid en -recht dat reageert op de ontwikkelingen en ze probeert bij te sturen.

     

    In deze verkenning, die gelijktijdig met het WRR-rapport Focus op functies: uitdagingen voor een toekomstbestendig mediabeleid is gepubliceerd, analyseren verschillende auteurs van de WRR en het CPB de dominante economische, sociaal-culturele, technologische en juridische ontwikkelingen die voor de toekomst van het medialandschap van belang zijn.

    This book studies literary sociability during the belle époque (1890-1914) by comparing and relating organizations of authors with intellectual sociability in general. Drawing on a combination of methods including social network analysis, existing histories of Dutch and French speaking literature are questioned. This study shows, for instance, how author’s societies and literary journals were functional in the symbolic struggle between ‘dilettante’ writers on the one hand and self declared ‘professional’ authors on the other. It concludes that Belgian authorship was shaped within a social space that was much broader than the national social space, especially as far as the social construction of the Belgian author-intellectual was concerned. As such, being an intellectual became an important category of personal identity.
