    Recent books and exhibitions have shown that Victorians were not so straitlaced about sexual matters as has been popularly assumed. Ellen Bayuk Rosenman's engrossing and enlightening book proves that the Victorians were extraordinarily articulate and resourceful when it came to expressing their sexual desires. Narratives of erotic experience were written, justified to the conservative culture, and circulated for the pleasure of readers. Rosenman's exploration of masculinity and femininity in Victorian sexual storytelling includes an account of the "spermatorrhea panic" that terrified the men of Britain, tells of Theresa Longworth's erotic revisions of the romance plot, and takes up the exhaustive, even exhausting, pornographic epic My Secret Life. Drawing on social history, court cases, medical literature, popular novels, and the diaries and letters of everyday life, Rosenman looks beyond the usual sexual suspects—homosexuals and prostitutes, for example—to address a range of pleasures that emerged from the ideological structures meant to contain them. She asserts that, however powerful ideology is, it does not script erotic repertoires in definitive or predictable ways, and that individuals can find ways of evading or easing its constraints

    Other Mothers, edited by Ellen Bayuk Rosenman and Claudia C. Klaver, offers a range of essays that open a conversation about Victorian motherhood as a wide-ranging, distinctive experience and idea. In spite of its importance, however, it is one of the least-studied aspects of the Victorian era, subsumed under discussions of femininity and domesticity. This collection addresses this void, revealing the extraordinary diversity of Victorian motherhood. Exploring diaries, novels, and court cases, with contexts ranging from London to Egypt to Australia, these varied accounts take the collection “beyond the maternal ideal” to consider the multiple, unpredictable ways in which motherhood was experienced and imagined in this formative historical period. Other Mothers joins revisionist approaches to femininity that now characterize Victorian studies. Its contents trace intersections among gender, race, and class; question the power of separate spheres ideology; and insist on the context-specific nature of social roles. The fifteen essays in this volume contribute to the fields of literary criticism, history, cultural studies, and history.

    With its theme of autonomy and independence, Virginia Woolf's 1929 essay A Room of One's Own has become part of our modern cultural vocabulary. It was the first literary history of women writers and the first theory of literary inheritance in which gender was the central category. As a theory of women's literature, it presents general ideas and issues through which the lives and works of women writers might profitably be read. Woolf (in the persona of narrator) does not offer extended readings of individual literary works but speculates about why and how women wrote as they did - which has proved infinitely more valuable to twentieth-century critics attempting to map out the new terrain of women's literature. A Room of One's Own is much more than a historical landmark of feminist criticism: remarkably, it has served the needs of various strains of feminist criticism, not all of them compatible with each other In this balanced and insightful study, Ellen Bayuk Rosenman explores the myriad perceptions of a work whose famous title comes from one of its most basic and simple prescriptions: that to fare as a writer in the modern world a woman needs a room of her own and [pound]500 a year. In a broad sense, Rosenman points out, A Room of One's Own analyzes the constraints on women's achievement - the hostile environment in which they write - and the responses, both creative and self-defeating, that this environment provokes. This environment - the historically ordered patriarchy - Rosenman observes as Woolf observed it, from the place of the outsider. Rosenman follows the essay's analysis of what she considers two large and vague words: patriarchy and feminism In various chapters Rosenman discusses the essay's exploration of sociology of creativity; of male social institutions - namely, Oxford and Cambridge universities and the British Museum - as gateways at which the initiated are separated from the outsiders; and of female creativity and literary history. Rosenman also pays special attention to the essay as novel, showing how the twists and turns of Woolf's narrative in A Room of One's Own - her creation of a shadowy persona and her heavy use of irony - resemble experimental literary techniques. Rosenman concludes her engaging analysis with a summation of the "blind spots" of Woolf's masterwork

    Recent books and exhibitions have shown that Victorians were not so straitlaced about sexual matters as has been popularly assumed. Ellen Bayuk Rosenman's engrossing and enlightening book proves that the Victorians were extraordinarily articulate and resourceful when it came to expressing their sexual desires. Narratives of erotic experience were written, justified to the conservative culture, and circulated for the pleasure of readers. Rosenman's exploration of masculinity and femininity in Victorian sexual storytelling includes an account of the "spermatorrhea panic" that terrified the men of Britain, tells of Theresa Longworth's erotic revisions of the romance plot, and takes up the exhaustive, even exhausting, pornographic epic My Secret Life. Drawing on social history, court cases, medical literature, popular novels, and the diaries and letters of everyday life, Rosenman looks beyond the usual sexual suspects—homosexuals and prostitutes, for example—to address a range of pleasures that emerged from the ideological structures meant to contain them. She asserts that, however powerful ideology is, it does not script erotic repertoires in definitive or predictable ways, and that individuals can find ways of evading or easing its constraints.

In a broad sense, Rosenman points out, A Room of One's Own analyzes the constraints on women's achievement - the hostile environment in which they write - and the responses, both creative and self-defeating, that this environment provokes. This environment - the historically ordered patriarchy - Rosenman observes as Woolf observed it, from the place of the outsider. Rosenman follows the essay's analysis of what she considers two large and vague words: patriarchy and feminism In various chapters Rosenman discusses the essay's exploration of sociology of creativity; of male social institutions - namely, Oxford and Cambridge universities and the British Museum - as gateways at which the initiated are separated from the outsiders; and of female creativity and literary history. Rosenman also pays special attention to the essay as novel, showing how the twists and turns of Woolf's narrative in A Room of One's Own - her creation of a shadowy persona and her heavy use of irony - resemble experimental literary techniques. Rosenman concludes her engaging analysis with a summation of the "blind spots" of Woolf's masterwork
