    Erzählungen bilden einen großen Teil des Gegenstandsbereichs einer Fülle von Wissenschaften; neben den Sozialwissenschaften befassen sich etwa Philosophie, Geschichtswissenschaft, Anthropologie, Psychologie und Rechtswissenschaft mit Narrationen. Zudem hat sich in vielen Disziplinen die Einsicht durchgesetzt, dass die Form von Erzählungen maßgeblichen Einfluss auf die Bedeutung hat, die den erzählten Ereignissen zugewiesen wird. Der Artikel begründet die Relevanz einer interdisziplinären Auseinandersetzung mit dem Schlüsselkonzept der Narrativität anhand von drei Schritten: Zunächst erfolgt eine Begriffsdefinition, danach werden kurze Überlegungen zum interdisziplinären Potenzial der Erzähltheorie angestellt, und zum Schluss werden einige kognitive Funktionen von Erzählungen skizziert, wobei exemplarisch auf Empathie, ‚Theory of Mind‘ und die persuasive Kraft von Erzählungen eingegangen wird.

    Zu Beginn des 21. Jahrhunderts steht der Begriff Kreativität hoch im Kurs, und das Schöpferische wird sowohl für Individuen als auch Gesellschaften als lebensnotwendig angesehen. Es existieren viele Theorien und praktische Anwendungsvorschläge, die einzelwissenschaftlich unterschiedliche Aspekte herausgreifen, dann jedoch zu weitgreifenden Folgerungen kommen, die durch das verwendete wissenschaftliche Paradigma nicht zu begründen sind. Deswegen ist es notwendig, die Grenzen der Gültigkeit einzelner Beiträge zu bestimmen und festzustellen, an welchen Stellen Erkenntnisse anderer Wissenschaftsbereiche relevant werden.Der vorliegende Beitrag versucht, die Potenziale und Begrenzungen neurobiologischer, psychologischer und kulturwissenschaftlicher Thesen auszuloten und Verbindungsmöglichkeiten aufzuzeigen. Dafür werden interdisziplinäre Leitbegriffe etabliert, die die einzelwissenschaftlichen Perspektiven erweitern und komplementieren könnten.

    Attempts to explore Virginia Woolf’s theory of aesthetics are usually based on or aimed at a consideration of her novels. However, a careful analysis of her essays allows us to trace cornerstones of her aesthetics, which—though not amounting to a rigid formal framework—are surprisingly coherent. While her ideas about “the art of writing” developed throughout her lifetime, and although the emphasis shifts, it is possible to identify some major aesthetic principles upon which she elaborated in only a handful of theoretical essays, but which nonetheless underpin both the practice and the theory of her literary criticism. Examining the connections between Woolf’s beliefs about aesthetics, it becomes possible to place her thoughts about modernist modes of writing in the context of her overarching framework of ideas concerning literature and literary change. For Woolf, writing was a method of communication, and some key characteristics of her aesthetics include writers visions, formal unity, impersonality and the cultural embedding of literature Considering not only cultural circumstances but also readers’ expectations as possible obstacles that can distract writers and impair their work, Woolf wrote hundreds of essays trying to convey her ideas about the “art of writing” to common readers.

    A series of theoretical reorientations has not only reshaped the study of culture and the humanities, these ‘cultural turns’ (Doris Bachmann-Medick) have also had an impact on the trajectory of literary studies. Taking its cue from one of the most recent turns that have been proposed, viz. the so-called ‘eudaimonic turn’ (James O. Pawelski and D.J. Moores), this essay argues that literary studies have good reasons to involve themselves more strongly than hitherto in the interdisciplinary discussion on what constitutes a good life, and that literature itself creates important life-knowledge and cultural models of what a good life could look like. Literary works delineate aesthetically created thought experiments that test different models of viable or good forms of life (section 2). The knowledge of literature, however, does not entail explicit or normative recommendations on how to lead one’s life, but is based more on the aesthetic forms and literary techniques used for representing forms of life. These hypotheses are explored in section 3 by means of an exemplary analysis of Axel Hacke’s latest book ‚Wozu wir da sind. Walter Wemuts Handreichungen für ein gelungenes Leben‘ (2019). The essay attempts to show that a reorientation towards the poetics and thematic of a good life or eudaimonia opens up not only new research questions and trajectories for literary studies but also affords an opportunity to increase the social and practical relevance of a form of literary studies that gravitate towards life sciences (section 4). A short epilogue in a more personal and subjective vein concludes this essay with reflections on the question of what professors and universities are there for.

    Proceeding from the insights about crisis as a metaphor and particular kind of cultural narrative delineated in the introduction to this special issue, this essay examines the competing narratives that have emerged in the wake of the crises generated by the Corona-virus pandemic and the Covid-19 illness. It argues that crisis narratives in general and the particular stories that have been disseminated to report on and explain the ongoing Corona crisis always consist of both a diagnosis of the present state of affairs in a society and an attempt to project scenarios of possible futures. The first section introduces the ongoing battle between competing narratives and the concomitant question of whether the Coronavirus pandemic qualifies as a ‘Black Swan’ (sensu Nassim Nicholas Taleb), i. e. the kind of highly improbable event that causes massive consequences. Taking its cue from the question „Crisis compared to what?“ posed by the anthropologist Janet Roitman, section 2 explores the relation between crisis narratives, the diagnoses of the present that they entail, and the underlying norms and values of such judgments about crises. Section 3 then examines the implications of the most salient competing narratives that have been disseminated about the Coronavirus pandemic and the Covid-19 crises. In section 4, we make an attempt to clarify what kind of crisis we are currently witnessing, asking whether the latter can be understood as a catalyst of a cluster or series of different crises, as a ‘deep crisis’ with various dimensions and layers, and as a ‘patchwork pandemic’. In section 5 we turn our attention to the contagious nature of narratives in general and competing stories surrounding the Coronavirus pandemic in particular, arguing that they constitute more than just an ‘infodemic’ in that they amount to nothing less than an epistemological and normative crisis. The essay concludes by exploring the underlying big questions that crisis narratives of the pandemic as critiques of non-sustainable forms of life raise ...

    This article argues that decades before Sir Walter Scott published his first historical novel, a number of innovative British novels questioned the possibility of rendering historical topics in narrative form. Although Henry Fielding had claimed that the novel should closely resemble historiography, three eighteenth-century British novelists recognized the problems besetting the attempt to provide true stories of the past in different ways. Sarah Fielding tried to get rid of the elevated position of the ‘omniscient’ narrator, rejecting even chronological order in her fictionalised account of the lives of Cleopatra and Octavia. Laurence Sterne parodied not only historiographical ways of arriving at true knowledge of past events in his seminal novel Tristram Shandy, he also demonstrated that the story is the result of the narrator’s use of narrative conventions and of language, and that the gap between the past and the representation of the past cannot be bridged. Maria Edgeworth tried to get rid of the historiographical dilemma by choosing an unreliable narrator as a biographer in her work Castle Rackrent, which is one of those eighteenth-century novels that casts doubt on whether it is possible to tell a true story of the past with those narrative means which Scott would later use to great acclaim.

    During the last fifteen years or so, unreliable narration has not only developed into a phenomenon of scholarly interest and narratological inquiry; it also captures the imagination of the public, who avidly read stories or watch films which feature unreliable narrators. From the point of view of literary studies, the topic is particularly interesting because it is not only situated at the interface of different narratological approaches, but also at the cross­ roads where narratology, theories of fictionality, ethics, and interpretation meet. Giving an overview and discussion of recent research developments with regard to unreliability, this essay attempts to show that an exploration of this key concept can provide valuable insights into the advantages and the possible limitations and blind spots of those approaches. Looking at unreliable narration as a test-case for the various postclassical approaches, the article discusses the advances made in the reconceptualization of unreliable narration in e.g. cognitive narratology, feminist narratology, and transgeneric and intermedial studies of unreliable narration, while also offering a brief overview of new research questions and horizons that have opened up as well as some desiderata and suggestions for future research on unreliable narration.

    During the last two decades there has not only been a wide range of ever more crises of all sorts; we have also witnessed an inflationary use of the term crisis, and a concomitant proliferation of factual and fictional crisis narratives across various media. The first section of this introduction provides a brief overview of some of the crisis narratives and crisis scenarios that have recently emerged, while also outlining the topic of this special issue. Delineating some of the most important recent developments in interdisciplinary research on this still underresearched topic, section 2 then explores both the concepts of crisis and crisis narratives, and their main recurrent features, highlighting major trends and seminal publications (section 2). As the subtitle already indicates, the focus will be on an exploration of the functions that crisis narratives and the scenarios evoked by them in general (section 3), and literary crisis narratives in particular (section 4), serve to fulfil. This introductory essay concludes by providing a brief overview of the articles that follow as paradigm examples for exploring crisis narratives in literary studies (section 5), and of future perspectives that the recent proliferation of crises might have for research and university teaching (section 6), arguing that literary scholars in general, and narrative theorists in particular could, and arguably should, contribute to a better understanding of the forms and functions of the medial uses of crises by shedding light on crisis narratives and crisis scenarios.
