    The allegorical quartet of birds which prey upon the sheep in 1 Enoch 90.2 have been variously identified by early-modern and modern scholars, with no solution reaching consensus. This article proposes the “hobay” should be translated as “ibises” and accordingly represent an Egyptian people-group. I first advance this argument with the help of a parallel usage of terminology in the Greek Testament of Judah. I next confirm the utility of this identification with a brief survey of roughly contemporary primary sources (textual and material) which connect ibises and Egypt. Finally, with these cultural discourses in mind, I re-integrate the ibises into the Animal Apocalypse, suggesting that the recasting of a graceful national bird as a carnivorous monster is a deviously clever imperial critique.

    Im Zeitalter der digitalen Forschung und der wachsenden Konkurrenz um öffentliche Wahrnehmung und Fördermittel ist es ein Anliegen aller Wissenschaften, Daten nicht nur computergestützt auszuwerten, sondern die gewonnenen Ergebnisse auch zu visualisieren. Mit der Verbreitung von Werkzeugen zur Erstellung von Diagrammen oder Karten hat sich die Verwendung von Netzwerkgraphen oder digitalen Karten mittlerweile auch in den traditionellen Geisteswissenschaften fest etabliert.Unter Umständen verengen oder verfälschen Visualisierungen allerdingsden Blick auf komplexe Zusammenhänge. Dieser Problematik widmet sich der Beitrag anhand konkreter Beispiele aus den Forschungsarbeiten der Autor*innen. Netzwerkanalysen, Visualisierungen biografischer Mobilität und Raumvisualisierung spielen für diese Forschungen eine wesentliche Rolle und werden mit besonderem Fokus auf die Methode des Data Storytellings projektübergreifend reflektiert.

    Wissensgraphen und Netzwerkansätze sind in ganz verschiedenen Disziplinen ein immer lebhafteres Forschungsthema. Dieser Artikel würdigt ihre parallele Entwicklung in Anwendung und Mathematik und die verschiedenen gegenwärtigen Ansätze zwischen Informatik, Mathematik, Data Science und den Geistes- und Sozialwissenschaften. Daraus ergeben sich zentrale interdisziplinäre Perspektiven: Erstens müssen die Netzwerkansätze in den Geistes- und Sozialwissenschaften breiter gefasst werden, da sich durch die Verwendung von Linked Data bereits implizit Wissensnetzwerke ergeben. Zweitens ergeben sich durch die methodische Breite von Wissensgraphen, in der beispielsweise soziale Netzwerke als Wissensgraphen aufgefasst werden können, neue Werkzeuge und neue Analysemethoden. Insofern versteht sich dieser Beitrag als Plädoyer für den interdisziplinären Austausch und eine vertiefte Diskussion über Methoden, Algorithmen und Linked Data Ansätze.

    This article explores orality in the context of West African Christian women's voices, arguing that their oral expressions highlight their lived faith experiences and function as a significant resource within the study of Christianity in Africa. The article first outlines concepts of orality in relation to gender, spirituality, language, and community engagement. We argue that women's oral contributions are a rich source of insight into West African Christian spirituality but are predominantly marginalised from more formal theological discourse. We further note that orality is not a stepping-stone to formal academic discourse but is instead an equal and important counterpoint requiring attention. These concepts are elucidated through two ethnographic case studies. The first engages Afua Kuma, a non-literate Ghanaian oral artist who adapted chiefly praises for Christologically centred prayers. The second focuses on Hannah (not her real name), a well-educated Nigerian woman living with a disability, for whom singing proved spiritually transformative. We conclude with some of the challenges and benefits of engaging orality.

    The purpose of this article is to study the Romanian Orthodox place of worship of Lunghezza in Rome, utilizing the expression ‘shared religious place’ and thus referring to the shift from secular to religious and asserting that it is now a camouflaged religious place. Using GIS mapping and Digital Humanities methods and tools, the paper analyses the geographical presence of Orthodox Romanians in the Metropolitan City of Rome territory and the architectural typologies of their places of worship. The history and geography of the church in Lunghezza, a former stable converted into a house of worship, reveals the form of the resilience of the Romanian Orthodox parishes, forced to find various and compelling solutions in order to survive as places of worship.

    The study of emotion in Islamic hagiology remains largely uninterrogated, as visible in elliptical descriptions that classify particular texts, bodily gestures, or utterances as “emotive.” I advocate for a shift from taxonomic approaches to emotion to a focus on function in narrative hagiographies. I argue that emotion provides a rich analytic category for understanding the dynamic relationship between texts and bodies in the hagiographical process, as well as the multiplicity of bodies that are involved or implicated. To illustrate this framework, I provide readings of narratives in the sīra (biographies of Muḥammad) which depict bodily manifestations of awe when in Muḥammad’s presence. Endorsing the position that the hagiographical process is constantly under negotiation, these analyses reveal that emotional practices are crucial to understanding the relationality between exemplary persons, biographers, characters, and readers.

    Here we respond to a recent article in this journal by Leonardo Ambasciano, in which he offers a high-level critique of “big data,” artificial intelligence, and computational approaches in the study of religion. The main thrust of his argument is that these approaches are fundamentally problematic both because of their negative effect on the humanities and because they inappropriately rely on “neoliberal philanthrocapitalist” funding. In our response, we refer to our experience working with computational scientists and humanities scholars in collaborative teams, where they stand shoulder to shoulder in equal collaboration with one another, each side relying on the distinctive value that the other provides as they attempt to create clearer and more valid descriptions, analyses, and explanations of complex human behaviors. We correct several errors of fact in Ambasciano’s article, focusing first on ideological and ethical issues and then on methodological and epistemological issues. We conclude by emphasizing several points on which we agree with his assessment.

    The present contribution is a riposte to Lane, Wildman, and Shults’ commentary on my MTSR article “He Who Pays the Piper Calls the Tune” (Ambasciano 2022). I offer an epistemological and historical criticism of some of their most relevant claims, along with the identification and deconstruction of some of the biases and fallacies behind their commentary. I also highlight – once again – the historiographical neglect and some of the most questionable approaches and unresolved issues in the current CSR 2.0 modus operandi. Along with the ethical and financial impact of private donors with political and religious agendas in the field, such controversial topics call for immediate action from peers and associations to avoid the further drain of money, resources, and personnel in a time of increasing financial austerity. A computational science incapable of confronting and resolving such basic issues is not a computational science at all – it’s mere tech-evangelism.

    This article seeks to offer a new reading of 1 Peter, while building upon the work of Barth L. Campbell, Travis B. Williams, and David G. Horrell (and others of course). Campbell sought to elucidate the importance of honor for the audience of 1 Peter utilizing Rhetorical Criticism, while both Williams and Horrell have employed Postcolonial Criticism to provide a reading “from the margins.” Specifically, Williams offered an interpretation of “good works” which situated that semantic and conceptual domain within subaltern strategies of mimicry and symbolic inversion. However, heretofore largely unexplored in 1 Peter is that aspect of the honor equation which actualizes honor: the honorific. This study argues that “the unfading crown of glory” in 1 Pet 5:4 serves as a conceptual key to the subversive honorific language within, thereby actualizing (and subverting) the broader theme of honor through the recognition of “good works.”

    The aim of the article is to present essential aspects of five emotions (joy, fear, love, sadness, anger) on the basis of written sources from ancient Egypt. Through selective analyses of the Egyptian emotion vocabulary, including metaphors and descriptions of physical states and reactions, some elementary concepts will be explained. In addition, it is a concern to point out some of the difficulties that can be associated with the investigation of emotions in ancient Egyptian texts. Therefore, brief references are given to current Egyptological studies that have been devoted to the topic adopting new methods.
