    In 1961, Martin Esslin named a body of plays that lacked plot, character depth, and details of time and space the "Theatre of the Absurd". Esslin explained that this type of theatre, minimalist in the extreme, constituted a response to the existential crisis of Europe, which was in the midst of recovering from World War II. But the fact that this body of theatre lacked details of time and space means that we may break the ties that anchor the Theatre of the Absurd irremediably to the historical context of post-World War II Europe. How can the Theatre of the Absurd speak meaningfully to us in the twenty-first century? This book explores this question by combining the avant-garde that Martin Esslin named in 1961 in his signature work The Theatre of the Absurd with gender studies, queer theory, and psychoanalysis, and avant-garde studies. The Theatre of the Absurd is capable of subverting post-millennial institutions and ideologies, including the Prison Industrial Complex and the West’s domination of the Islamic world in a post-9/11 era.

    Le modèle postdramatique de Hans-Thies Lehmann suscite de nombreuses réactions, positives et négatives, parmi les spécialistes du théâtre. Pour la première fois, l’ouvrage propose une étude approfondie de la question postdramatique. S’appuyant sur une quarantaine d’exemples de théâtre contemporain, l’auteure examine la théorie postdramatique et fournit une analyse critique des codes propres à ces pratiques artistiques. Les formes postdramatiques, situées au croisement du théâtre, de la danse, de la performance, des nouvelles technologies et des arts plastiques et visuels, invitent le spectateur à des processus de réception spécifiques. Cet ouvrage propose d’interroger la relation que tisse le spectateur avec le spectacle au moyen de modèles de réception fondés sur des approches esthétiques, sémiologiques et sociologiques. Le spectateur y est abordé sous un angle individuel (personne singulière) et collectif (membre d’une communauté).     C’est dans une notoriété encore toute relative que sont fêtés cette année les 150 ans de la naissance de Lou Andreas-Salomé (1861-1937). Pendant plusieurs décennies, la critique s’est contentée de mettre en valeur la si fascinante image d’une femme libre ayant fréquenté les hauts lieux de la modernité européenne, quand ce n’était pas la muse d’auteurs ou de personnalités plus prestigieuses. Longtemps, et au mieux, son identité d’écrivain est restée au second plan. Or, Lou Andreas-Salomé a écrit une dizaine de textes romanesques, principalement entre 1885 et 1911. L’Europe littéraire était alors en pleine ébullition, à la recherche de nouvelles expressions esthétiques. Si ses travaux ont suscité ces dernières années un élan nouveau, visant à sortir son œuvre d’une plate approche biographique, un ouvrage consacrée exclusivement à l’un de ses textes littéraires, en l’occurrence Im Zwischenland, faisait encore défaut. Comment en ces temps de profondes mutations, Lou aborde-t-elle la notion d’altérité ? Quels prolongements la poétique immanente du texte permet-elle de dessiner en regard des entre-deux linguistiques et culturels du monde actuel ? L’analyse de Im Zwischenland (1902) proposée par cet ouvrage fait pleine lumière sur la polysémie du titre du recueil, avec en arrière-fond les débats et les enjeux esthétiques de l’Europe au tournant du siècle.

    Souvent jugée sectaire et dogmatique, la production culturelle communiste de l’immédiat après-guerre et de la guerre froide n’a que rarement suscité des analyses approfondies, particulièrement dans le contexte belge qu’interroge ce livre. Proposant pour la première fois une analyse systématique de la critique littéraire dans les journaux communistes de l’époque (1944-1956), Laurence van Nuijs examine la conception de la littérature qui s’y développe au quotidien. Sur la base d’une méthodologie sociocritique, elle offre une lecture détaillée du discours en question, dont elle souligne la dimension collective, sans en ignorer les variantes individuelles. Son étude mobilise les concepts de nationalité, de canon et d’histoire littéraire, qui permettent de rendre compte de la tension entre autonomie et hétéronomie en littérature, mais aussi de comparer, dans une perspective « nationale », l’organe francophone Le Drapeau Rouge et l’organe flamand De Rode Vaan.     In the ecological challenges of the twenty-first century, interculturally sensitive understandings of nature, place, and environment are essential for the development of a planetary community. Acknowledging that the future of humankind is global, this volume explores the multi-faceted semantics of ecology in contemporary Indigenous theater and performance. Focusing on works by such eminent Indigenous artists as Tomson Highway, Drew Hayden Taylor, Marie Clements, Yvette Nolan, Kevin Loring, Wesley Enoch, Hone Kouka, Briar Grace-Smith, and Witi Ihimaera, the volume brings together a spectrum of ecological perspectives from Europe, North America, and Oceania.     Many recent studies of racial passing have emphasized the continuing, almost haunting power of racial segregation even in the post-segregation period in the US, or in the post-apartheid period in South Africa. This "present-ness" of racial passing, the fact that it has not really become "passé," is noticeable in the great number of testimonies which have been published in the 2000s and 2010s by descendants of individuals who passed for white in the English-speaking world. The sheer number of publications suggest a continuing interest in the kind of relation to the personal and national past which is at stake in the long-delayed revelation of cases of racial passing. This interest in family memoirs or in fictional works re-tracing the erasure of some relative’s racial identity is by no means limited to the United States: for instance, Zoë Wicomb in South Africa or Zadie Smith in the UK both use the passing novel to unravel the complex situation of mixed-race subjects in relation to their family past and to a national past marked by a history of racial inequality. Yet, the vast majority of critical approaches to racial passing have so far remained largely focused on the United States and its specific history of race relations. The objective of this volume is twofold: it aims at shedding light on the way texts or films show the work of individual memory and collective recollection as they grapple with a racially divided past, struggling with its legacy or playing with its stereotypes. Our second objective has been to explore the great variety in the forms taken by racial passing depending on the context, which in turn leads to differences in the ways it is remembered. Focusing on how a previously erased racial identity may resurface in the present has enabled us to extend the scope of our study to other countries than the United States, so that this volume hopes to propose some new, transnational directions in the study of racial passing.

    Taking its cue from Eugene O’Neill’s questioning of «faithful realism», voiced by Edmund Tyrone in Long Day’s Journey into Night, this book examines the distant legacy of the Irish American playwright in contemporary multiethnic drama in the U.S. It explores the labyrinth of formal devices through which African American, Latina/o, First Nations, and Asian American dramatists have unconsciously reinterpreted O’Neill’s questioning of mimesis. In their works, hybridizations of stage realism function as aesthetic celebrations of the spiritual potentialities of cultural in-betweenness. This volume provides detailed analyses of over forty plays authored by such key artists as August Wilson, Suzan-Lori Parks, José Rivera, Cherríe Moraga, Hanay Geiogamah, Diane Glancy, David Henry Hwang, and Chay Yew, to give only a few prominent examples.     This collection of essays explores some of the avenues along which the field of comparative drama studies could be reconfigured at the dawn of the twenty-first century. It offers a comparative analysis of theatre across national and linguistic boundaries while simultaneously acknowledging newer trends in ethnic studies. Indeed, the contributors to this critical anthology productively combine traditional comparative literature methodologies with performance approaches and postcolonial perspectives. In this way, they shed new light on the intertextual, multi-ethnic, and cross-cultural dialogues linking theatrical traditions from Europe, North America, Asia, Africa, and the Pacific region.     This critical anthology seeks to reassess the complex cultural and literary negotiations taking place between Europe and its margins in an increasingly globalized age. The somewhat paradoxical title of this volume playfully reverses traditional views of the relationship between Europe and its «Others», reflecting the awareness that former European cultural centers could become tomorrow’s new literary margins. This collection reevaluates the enduring impact of European cultural and literary traditions on various postcolonial and contemporary literatures, not only in world regions that used to be called the new margins of Europe but also in the former center, i.e. Europe itself. As the contributions gathered in this book suggest, the current relationship between European culture and its previous «Others» is no longer marked by unilateral opposition. Cette anthologie critique tente de redéfinir la complexité des négociations culturelles et littéraires entre l’Europe et ses marges à une époque de globalisation grandissante. Dans un esprit ludique, le titre quelque peu paradoxal de ce volume renverse les conceptions traditionnelles de la relation entre l’Europe et ses « Autres », suggérant de la sorte que les anciens centres culturels de l’Europe pourraient bien devenir les nouvelles marges littéraires du futur. Ce collectif évalue sous un angle neuf la pérennité de l’impact des traditions littéraires et culturelles européennes sur diverses littératures postcoloniales et contemporaines, non seulement dans des régions du monde autrefois considérées comme les marges de l’Europe, mais également en Europe, le centre culturel de jadis. Comme l’indiquent les textes réunis dans cet ouvrage, la relation actuelle entre l’Europe et ses anciens « Autres » n’est plus caractérisée par une opposition unilatérale.

    Cet ouvrage propose une « lecture critique des traductions » comme une forme plus souple et plus libre de critique des textes traduits. Cette lecture a pour mission de distinguer la traduction du texte original et de conduire à la reconnaissance de son statut propre. Elle suppose une analyse comparative de l’original et de ses versions, à travers un examen approfondi visant autant le micro-texte que le macro-texte et surtout la relation entre les deux. Plusieurs problématiques sont abordées, comme la traduction du conte merveilleux, des textes gastronomiques, ironiques, aphoristiques ou poétiques.     Dans le sillage du vingtième anniversaire des années 1989–1991, cet ouvrage vise à dresser un bilan de l’évolution de ces littératures qui ont été bouleversées par la chute du régime communiste en Europe. Sa méthode interdisciplinaire, alliant la sociologie de la vie littéraire à l’analyse esthétique, permet d’éclairer le lien entre la transition géopolitique et les enjeux socio-culturels, thématiques et esthétiques des littératures post-communistes. La mise à bas du système communiste a entraîné un bouleversement du statut de l’écrivain, désormais acteur du marché du livre mondial. Or, les littératures de ces trois aires habituellement décrites comme Europe centrale, Europe orientale et Europe balkanique entretiennent de nombreuses complicités esthétiques et solidarités thématiques. Les études réunies dans le présent volume prennent soin d’en éclairer les ruptures et les continuités, tout en montrant les passerelles qui unissent ces trois espaces. Aux études présentées ici répondent sept traductions inédites de textes littéraires, qui permettent d’allier la réflexion théorique au plaisir de la lecture. L’ouvrage que le lecteur tient entre ses mains est issu de trois rencontres entre historiens de la littérature, écrivains, traducteurs et historiens, qui ont eu lieu en 2010 et 2011.

    Le sujet poétique est une notion paradoxale qui nous renseigne de façon paradigmatique sur le devenir de la poésie moderne. Ses éclatements et ses scissions à la fin du Symbolisme définissent un champ sémiotique que les avant-gardes historiques ont adapté ou transformé. L’étude de l’œuvre d’Apollinaire et de celle de Huidobro montre à quel point une description stable du sujet est pertinente pour comprendre les raisons profondes de la poésie, de la crise à la célébration lyrique et jusqu’à la pure spatialisation. Cet ouvrage cherche à cerner la dynamique de deux définitions majeures du « sujet » et à éclaircir ses espaces d’allocution et de représentation culturelle. D’Alcools à Altazor, le sujet et son corollaire intermittent, le mythe du Je-Poète, présentent des formes bien visibles dans le contexte des avant-gardes. Croix, avion, moulin, soldat : à la construction intertextuelle des figures identitaires se superpose leur récit auctorial.     L’ouvrage s’inscrit dans un champ de recherches en pleine expansion depuis le nouveau millénaire, le plurilinguisme littéraire, et qui a pour originalité d’historiciser le propos en explorant une période charnière, la fin du XIXe siècle. Aucun ouvrage existant n’est vraiment centré sur ce tournant du siècle, moment où la doxa de pureté de la langue et les esprits nationalistes tendent à promouvoir, voire à imposer l’idéal du monolinguisme et où, parallèlement, persiste à travers l’Europe et le monde un nombre important de situations et d’expérimentations diverses à contre-courant du monolinguisme puriste. Fruit d’un colloque qui s’est tenu dans le cadre du XXe Congrès de l’Association Internationale de Littérature Comparée à l’Université de la Sorbonne, à l’été 2013, les 14 contributeurs du présent volume interrogent cette situation paradoxale à partir de textes littéraires et de leurs auteurs, et contribuent à éclairer les différentes strates du plurilinguisme littéraire 1900 en leur complexe et souvent ambivalent enchevêtrement politique, éthique et esthétique – dont les problématiques ne sont pas sans rappeler les paradoxes du monde actuel dans un contexte où mondialisation et repli identitaire coexistent souvent.
