    This volume seeks to determine how contemporary American playwrights and theatre practitioners translate the current debate on cultural pluralism in the United States. While offering re-visions of the Melting Pot, they often challenge its idealistic assumptions, thus inscribing in their work the cultural difference of minorities. Up to now, scholars have studied isolated aspects of this phenomenon.     C’est dans une notoriété encore toute relative que sont fêtés cette année les 150 ans de la naissance de Lou Andreas-Salomé (1861-1937). Pendant plusieurs décennies, la critique s’est contentée de mettre en valeur la si fascinante image d’une femme libre ayant fréquenté les hauts lieux de la modernité européenne, quand ce n’était pas la muse d’auteurs ou de personnalités plus prestigieuses. Longtemps, et au mieux, son identité d’écrivain est restée au second plan. Or, Lou Andreas-Salomé a écrit une dizaine de textes romanesques, principalement entre 1885 et 1911. L’Europe littéraire était alors en pleine ébullition, à la recherche de nouvelles expressions esthétiques. Si ses travaux ont suscité ces dernières années un élan nouveau, visant à sortir son œuvre d’une plate approche biographique, un ouvrage consacrée exclusivement à l’un de ses textes littéraires, en l’occurrence Im Zwischenland, faisait encore défaut. Comment en ces temps de profondes mutations, Lou aborde-t-elle la notion d’altérité ? Quels prolongements la poétique immanente du texte permet-elle de dessiner en regard des entre-deux linguistiques et culturels du monde actuel ? L’analyse de Im Zwischenland (1902) proposée par cet ouvrage fait pleine lumière sur la polysémie du titre du recueil, avec en arrière-fond les débats et les enjeux esthétiques de l’Europe au tournant du siècle.

    Souvent jugée sectaire et dogmatique, la production culturelle communiste de l’immédiat après-guerre et de la guerre froide n’a que rarement suscité des analyses approfondies, particulièrement dans le contexte belge qu’interroge ce livre. Proposant pour la première fois une analyse systématique de la critique littéraire dans les journaux communistes de l’époque (1944-1956), Laurence van Nuijs examine la conception de la littérature qui s’y développe au quotidien. Sur la base d’une méthodologie sociocritique, elle offre une lecture détaillée du discours en question, dont elle souligne la dimension collective, sans en ignorer les variantes individuelles. Son étude mobilise les concepts de nationalité, de canon et d’histoire littéraire, qui permettent de rendre compte de la tension entre autonomie et hétéronomie en littérature, mais aussi de comparer, dans une perspective « nationale », l’organe francophone Le Drapeau Rouge et l’organe flamand De Rode Vaan. L’ouvrage comble ainsi une importante lacune dans les recherches littéraires et historiques, et met en lumière les possibilités herméneutiques d’une analyse discursive en contexte. « [U]n travail important, minutieux et bien écrit. » (Björn-Olav Dozo, Les Lettres Romanes 68.1-2, 2014)...
