    Ausgehend von der doppelten Frage, was an der japanischen Kultur genuin japanisch und was kulturell bedingt ist, zeigt Florian Coulmas, was die heutige japanische Kultur von anderen unterscheidet, und verdeutlicht, was unter Kultur zu verstehen ist.Er zeigt zum Beispiel das Verhalten im Alltag und die sozialen Beziehungen (Umgangsformen, Verwandtschaft usw.); Werte und Überzeugungen (vor allem religiöser Art); Institutionen wie den Jahreszyklus, die Schule oder die Firma; schliesslich Formen materieller Kultur (u.a. Kleidung und Mode, Behausung und Architektur, Essen und Ästhetik). Das Augenmerk richtet sich dabei hauptsächlich auf solche Eigenheiten der japanischen Kultur, die sich als relativ beständig erwiesen haben und in verschiedenen Epochen in Erscheinung treten. Die Analyse des geistigen Hintergrunds kultureller Traditionen ermöglicht es somit, Verhaltensweisen, Wertvorstellungen und Formen der ästhetischen Gestaltung zu verstehen, die auch dem hypermodernen Japan von heute einen ganz eigenen, unverwechselbaren Platz in der zunehmend globalisierten Welt erhalten haben.

    Agency mortgage backed securities (MBS) with diverse characteristics are traded in parallel with individualized contracts in the specified pool (SP) market and with standardized contracts in the to-be-announced (TBA) market. We find that this unique parallel trading environment significantly affects MBS returns: (1) Greater heterogeneity in MBS values increases the yields of all MBS, because it exacerbates the cheapest-to-deliver concerns for TBA buyers and reduces the value of the TBA market as a backup selling venue for SP buyers; (2) high selling pressure amplifies the impact of MBS heterogeneity on MBS yields; and (3) greater MBS heterogeneity dampens trading activities on both the SP and TBA markets but increases the ratio between the two. We provide evidence that these effects differ from the impacts of prepayment risks.

    The rapid development of artificial intelligence methods contributes to their wide applications for forecasting various financial risks in recent years. This study introduces a novel explainable case-based reasoning (CBR) approach without a requirement of rich expertise in financial risk. Compared with other black-box algorithms, the explainable CBR system allows a natural economic interpretation of results. Indeed, the empirical results emphasize the interpretability of the CBR system in predicting financial risk, which is essential for both financial companies and their customers. In addition, results show that the proposed automatic design CBR system has a good prediction performance compared to other artificial intelligence methods, overcoming the main drawback of a standard CBR system of highly depending on prior domain knowledge about the corresponding field.

    This book explores the interaction between three key aspects of everyday life-language, writing, and mobility -with particular focus on their effects on language contact. While the book adopts an established view of language and society that is in keeping with the sociolinguistic paradigm developed in recent decades, it differs from earlier studies in that it assigns writing a central position. Sociolinguistics has long concentrated primarily on speech,but Florian Coulmas shows in this volume that the social importance of writing should not be disregarded: it is the most consequential technology ever invented; it suggests stability; and it defines borders.     This book brings together three subjects which command our attention because of their changing roles in everyday life, language, writing, and mobility. In different ways, borders are being crossed, redrawn, and redefined as we watch, and while comparable processes could be observed in the past, they are today more conspicuous than ever, being propelled by demographics, technological innovation, and consumer capitalism. The said three subjects interact in various ways and have an impact on language contact which, as this book is designed to show, are best captured by a processual view along the lines laid out for social analysis by Norbert Elias. The processual view of language and society adopted here is congenial with the sociolinguistic paradigm developed over the past several decades, with one important difference, it assigns writing a central position. Sociolinguistics has always concentrated heavily on speech and largely ignored writing, although the social importance of writing cannot be denied. Giving written language its due in this book, then, has four reasons. (1) Writing is the most consequential technology ever invented. (2) Writing both suggests stability and defines borders. (3) Linguistics, while emphasizing that writing is external to language, is nevertheless indebted for its analytic categories to writing. (4) By turning virtually everyone into a writer/producer of texts, the digital revolution has fundamentally changed communication patters in ways that impact both social formations and language. Computer mediated communication (CMC) has transformed the social functions of writing and, through it, language.
