    A professor of poetry uses a deck of playing cards to measure the time until her lover returns from Afghanistan. Congolese soldiers find their loneliness reflected in the lyrics of rumba songs. Survivors of the siege of Sarajevo discuss which book they would have never burned for fuel. A Romanian political prisoner writes her memoir in her head, a book no one will ever read. These are the arts of survival in times of crisis. Rumba Under Fire proposes we think differently about what it means for the arts and liberal arts to be “in crisis.” In prose and poetry, the contributors to Rumba Under Fire explore what it means to do art in hard times. How do people teach, create, study, and rehearse in situations of political crisis? Can art and intellectual work really function as resistance to power? What relationship do scholars, journalists, or even memoirists have to the crises they describe and explain? How do works created in crisis, especially at the extremes of human endurance, fit into our theories of knowledge and creativity?

    This volume contributes to the study of early English poetics. In these essays, several related approaches and fields of study radiate outward from poetics, including stylistics, literary history, word studies, gender studies, metrics, and textual criticism. By combining and redirecting these traditional scholarly methods, as well as exploring newer ones such as object-oriented ontology and sound studies, these essays demonstrate how poetry responds to its intellectual, literary, and material contexts. The contributors propose to connect the small (syllables, words, and phrases) to the large (histories, emotions, faiths, secrets).     Die 15 Beiträge des Bandes fokussieren Heroinnen/Heldinnen, deren exemplarisches Handeln und/oder künstlerische Repräsentation die Möglichkeit aufzeigen, die ubiquitäre moderne Skepsis gegenüber Heroen- und Heldentum – die in vormodernen Epochen komplexer war – zu überwinden. Sie verdeutlichen, dass die virtus heroica keineswegs nur männlich konzeptualisiert wird. Die Beiträge loten aus, wie wirkmächtig männliche Norm- und Referenzmuster in der historischen, literarischen, künstlerischen und kulturellen Repräsentation von Heroinnen/Heldinnen sind. Zugleich zeigen die einzelnen Modellstudien aus je unterschiedlichen (Fach-)Perspektiven und auf der Analysebasis unterschiedlichster medialer Repräsentationen die Wirkmächtigkeit der Classical Tradition, die für die interdisziplinäre Konzeptualisierung von weiblichem Heroen-/Heldentum vergangener, „heroischer“ Epochen eine geradezu paradigmatische Rolle spielt.The 15 contributions of this volume focus on heroines, whose exemplary actions and / or artistic representations emphasise the possibility to overcome the ubiquitous modern scepticism towards heroism and heroes / heroines – which was definitely more complex in pre-modern “heroic” times – and highlight that conceptualisations of the virtus heroica are by no means only male(-coded). The contributions analyse the influence, prevalence and potency of male norms and references on the historical, literary, artistic and cultural representation of the discourse-inaugurating heroine en détail. At the same time, the respective contributions also serve as exemplary analyses of different forms of media representations from a variety of perspectives and research fields and traditions which illustrate the efficacy of the Classical Tradition, a tradition which plays an almost paradigmatic role in the interdisciplinary conceptualisation of female heroism / heroines of former, “heroic” epochs. Angaben zur beteiligten Person Vössing: Prof. Dr. Konrad Vössing lehrt seit 2005 Alte Geschichte an der Universität Bonn und ist Mitglied der Nordrhein-Westfälischen Akademie der Wissenschaften und der Künste. Angaben zur beteiligten Person Brüggen: Prof. Dr. Elke Brüggen lehrt Ältere deutsche Sprache und Literatur mit besonderer Berücksichtigung der deutschen Literatur des Mittelalters an der Universität Bonn. Sie ist stellvertretende Sprecherin des Bonner SFB 1167. Angaben zur beteiligten Person Dumitrescu: Dr. Irina Dumitrescu ist Professorin und Head of English Medieval Studies am Institut für Anglistik, Amerikanistik und Keltologie der Universität Bonn. Angaben zur beteiligten Person Gymnich: Prof. Dr. Marion Gymnich lehrt Anglistische Literatur- und Kulturwissenschaft an der Universität Bonn. Angaben zur beteiligten Person Krumeich: Gerd Krumeich lehrt Neuere und Neueste Geschichte an der Universität Düsseldorf. Angaben zur beteiligten Person Lichterfeld: Dr. Imke Lichterfeld hat in Bonn und Aberdeen, Schottland, Anglistik und Geschichte studiert, ein Jahr in York, Goßbritannien, als Lehrerin gearbeitet und war als Mitarbeiterin an der Universiät Bonn tätig, wo sie 2010 promoviert wurde. Zurzeit ist sie Studiengangsmanagerin am Institut für Anglistik, Amerikanistik und Keltologie. Angaben zur beteiligten Person Lindner: Dr. Martin Lindner ist geschäftsführender Assistent am Althistorischen Seminar der Georg-August-Universität Göttingen. Seine Forschungsschwerpunkte sind die Römische Kaiserzeit, die Mentalitätsgeschichte und die Antikenrezeption, insbesondere nationale Mythenbildung und die Antike in Film, Roman und Comic. Angaben zur beteiligten Person Plassmann: Dr. Alheydis Plassmann ist Privatdozentin in der Abteilung für Geschichte der Frühen Neuzeit und Rheinische Landesgeschichte an der Universität Bonn. Sie ist Leiterin des Projekts »Englische Königsherrschaft im Spiegel der Tyrannenschelte« des SFB 1167. Angaben zur beteiligten Person Wich-Reif: Dr. Claudia Wich-Reif ist Professorin für Geschichte der Deutschen Sprache und Sprachliche Variation an der Universität Bonn.     This volume contributes to the study of early English poetics. In these essays, several related approaches and fields of study radiate outward from poetics, including stylistics, literary history, word studies, gender studies, metrics, and textual criticism. By combining and redirecting these traditional scholarly methods, as well as exploring newer ones such as object-oriented ontology and sound studies, these essays demonstrate how poetry responds to its intellectual, literary, and material contexts. The contributors propose to connect the small (syllables, words, and phrases) to the large (histories, emotions, faiths, secrets). In doing so, they attempt to work magic on the texts they consider: turning an ordinary word into something strange and new, or demonstrating texture, difference, and horizontality where previous eyes had perceived only smoothness, sameness, and verticality

    This volume contributes to the study of early English poetics. In these essays, several related approaches and fields of study radiate outward from poetics, including stylistics, literary history, word studies, gender studies, metrics, and textual criticism. By combining and redirecting these traditional scholarly methods, as well as exploring newer ones such as object-oriented ontology and sound studies, these essays demonstrate how poetry responds to its intellectual, literary, and material contexts. The contributors propose to connect the small (syllables, words, and phrases) to the large (histories, emotions, faiths, secrets). In doing so, they attempt to work magic on the texts they consider: turning an ordinary word into something strange and new, or demonstrating texture, difference, and horizontality where previous eyes had perceived only smoothness, sameness, and verticality
