    For centuries, the art of translation has been misconstrued as a solitary affair. Yet, from Antiquity to the Middle Ages, groups of translators - sometimes teams comprised of specialists of different languages formed in order to transport texts from one language and culture to another. Collaborative Translation: from the Renaissance to the Digital Age uncovers the collaborative practices occluded in Renaissance theorizing of translation to which our individualist notions of translation are indebted. Leading translation scholars as well as professional translators have been invited here to detail their experiences of collaborative translation, as well as the fruits of their research into this neglected form of translation. This volume offers in-depth analysis of rich, sometimes explosive, relationships between authors and their translators. Their negotiations of cooperation and control, assistance and interference, are shown here to shape the translation of prominent modern authors such as Gunter Grass, Vladimir Nabokov and Haruki Murakami. The advent of printing, the cultural institutions and the legal and political environment that regulate the production of translated texts have each formalized many of the inherently social and communicative practices of translation. Yet this publishing regime has been profoundly disrupted by the technologies that are currently revolutionizing collaborative translation techniques

    Égalité de droits, ouverture à la différence - deux exigences trop souvent bafouées dans les relations entre communautés culturelles, mais aussi entre les langues dans lesquelles ces cultures diverses s'enracinent. Mais si parler la langue de l'autre, lorsqu'elle est dominante, peut être "acte d'allégeance et de soumission" (Amin Maalouf), la situation est plus complexe lorsqu'il s'agit de traduction. C'est cette complexité qu'abordent, sous différents angles, dans différents contextes et différentes combinaisons de langues, les dix chapitres de ce volume. Rédigés tantôt en français tantôt en anglais (deux langues dominantes), certains textes développent des considérations théoriques ; d?autres explorent les contraintes institutionnelles ; d'autres encore commentent les astuces dont font preuve traductrices et traducteurs pour retrouver dans la langue cible la présence d?une langue ou d'une variété linguistique minorisée dans leur texte source. Tous "déploient, autant sur le plan théorique que critique, des expériences traductives et des réflexions traductologiques où l?une des langues de travail détient le statut de langue coloniale, impériale ou hégémonique. C'est au sein du rapport de forces instauré par cette coprésence des langues qu'opère la traduction, soit pour masquer le conflit, soit pour, au contraire, le mettre en évidence". Un livre qui aborde de front le rôle de la traduction dans le rapport de force entre les langues. Dix chapitres qui explorent asymétries institutionnelles, astuces de traductrices et traducteurs pour contrer les inégalités entre les langues, et théories décoloniales pour mieux les affronter.

    Égalité de droits, ouverture à la différence - deux exigences trop souvent bafouées dans les relations entre communautés culturelles, mais aussi entre les langues dans lesquelles ces cultures diverses s'enracinent. Mais si parler la langue de l'autre, lorsqu'elle est dominante, peut être "acte d'allégeance et de soumission" (Amin Maalouf), la situation est plus complexe lorsqu'il s'agit de traduction. C'est cette complexité qu'abordent, sous différents angles, dans différents contextes et différentes combinaisons de langues, les dix chapitres de ce volume. Rédigés tantôt en français tantôt en anglais (deux langues dominantes), certains textes développent des considérations théoriques ; d?autres explorent les contraintes institutionnelles ; d'autres encore commentent les astuces dont font preuve traductrices et traducteurs pour retrouver dans la langue cible la présence d?une langue ou d'une variété linguistique minorisée dans leur texte source. Tous "déploient, autant sur le plan théorique que critique, des expériences traductives et des réflexions traductologiques où l?une des langues de travail détient le statut de langue coloniale, impériale ou hégémonique. C'est au sein du rapport de forces instauré par cette coprésence des langues qu'opère la traduction, soit pour masquer le conflit, soit pour, au contraire, le mettre en évidence". Un livre qui aborde de front le rôle de la traduction dans le rapport de force entre les langues. Dix chapitres qui explorent asymétries institutionnelles, astuces de traductrices et traducteurs pour contrer les inégalités entre les langues, et théories décoloniales pour mieux les affronter.
