'Krapp's Last Tape' remains one of the most striking pieces written for the theatre in the 20th century. Taken from Beckett's seminal play, 'A Piece of Monologue' expresses common Beckettian concerns such as introspection, memory and hopelessness, always with sympathy for the human condition.

Even for Beckett, whose later plays are often extremely short, 'Breath' is an unusually terse work. Its length can be estimated from Beckett's detailed instructions in the script to be about 25 seconds. It consists of the sound of 'an instant of recorded vagitus' (a birth-cry), followed by an amplified recording of somebody slowly inhaling and exhaling accompanied by an increase and decrease in the intensity of the light. There is then a second identical cry, and the piece ends. No people are seen on stage, but Beckett states that it should be 'littered with miscellaneous rubbish'.

'Catastrophe' is a short play by Samuel Beckett, written in French in 1982 at the invitation of A.I.D.A. (Association Internationale de Défense des Artistes) and first produced in the Avignon Festival in July 1982. Beckett considered it 'massacred.' It is one of his few plays to deal with a political theme and, arguably, holds the title of Beckett's most optimistic work. It was dedicated to then imprisoned Czech reformer and playwright, Václav Havel.

Beckett's 'Human Wishes' dramatized some episodes from the life of Samuel Johnson and takes its title from his long poem 'The Vanity of Human Wishes'. The episodes taken dramatize Johnson's relationship with Hester Thrale, and as such, draw from her 'Anecdotes and Diaries' rather than the traditionally more popular 'Life of Samuel Johnson' of James Boswell. The play was abandoned after the completion of the first act.

'Not I' takes place in a pitch-black space illuminated only by a single beam of light. This spotlight fixes on an actress's mouth about eight feet above the stage; everything else being blacked out and, in early performances, illuminates the shadowy figure of the Auditor who makes four increasingly ineffectual movements 'of helpless compassion' during brief breaks in the monologue where Mouth appears to be listening to some inner voice unheard by the audience.

Written in English in 1980, 'Ohio Impromptu' began as a favour to S.E. Gontarski, who requested a dramatic piece to be performed at an academic symposium in Columbus, Ohio in honour of Beckett's 75th birthday. Beckett was uncomfortable writing to order and struggled with the piece for nine months before it was ready. It was first performed in May 1981 at the Stadium II Theater; Alan Schneider directed with David Warrilow as 'Reader' and Rand Mitchell as 'Listener'.

'Play' begins when the curtain rises on three identical grey funeral 'urns', about three feet tall by preference, arranged in a row facing the audience. They contain three stock characters. In the middle urn is a man (M). To his right is his wife (W1) or long-time partner. The third urn holds his mistress (W2). Beckett has used similar imagery before, Mahood's jar in 'The Unnameable', for example, or the dustbins occupied by Nell and Nagg in 'Endgame'.

'Krapp's Last Tape' remains one of the most striking pieces written for the theatre in the 20th century. Taken from Beckett's seminal play, 'A Piece of Monologue' expresses common Beckettian concerns such as introspection, memory and hopelessness, always with sympathy for the human condition

No people are seen on stage, but Beckett states that it should be 'littered with miscellaneous rubbish'

It was dedicated to then imprisoned Czech reformer and playwright, Václav Havel
