    The article examines the evolution of the Brazilian household arrangements between 1977 and 1988 using PNAD (Brazilian National Household Surveys). It discusses the concepts used in the PNAD and classifies the household arrangements according to kinship relationships of its members. There is in Brazil a tendency of the households to be the residence of members of a single family. Such tendency, however, must not be taken as a sign of convergence of characteristics of the household arrangements or its nuclearization, as the composition of the household arrangements is slowly changing from the "nuclear family" pattern towards the so called "extended family arrangements".

    The article proposes a simple methodology to build a richness line that depends on the knowledge of the income distribution and the poverty line for a given population. The richness line is justified based on the principle that poverty is morally unacceptable and is defined as the line that delimitates the income needed to eliminate poverty by the way of reductions on income inequalities. Two richness lines are estimated using Brazilian 1999 National Household Survey data and the results are discussed.

    The article examines the Brazilian Welfare State's main tendencies between the early 1930's and the late 1990's. Comparing the literature on the subject it shows that the distributive characteristics of social policies were affected by an concentrative economic model, by the lack of a wide labor movement and by a bureaucracy with low levels of authonomy from the government. It concludes that there are no evidences that the Brazilian Welfare State has become more egalitarianist in the 1990's.

    Using data from the Brazilian Census 2000 we estimate whether the distribution of the eligible population of the Continuous Cash Benefit (BPC) would change after a modification in definition of family used to calculate family per capita income. Our results show that in 2000 the majority of eligible individuals would not be affected at all by such modification and no relevant changes in the size of the eligible population are expected.

    We estimate the distributions of the eligible public, benefits and coverage levels of the Brazilian Continuous Cash Benefit Program (BPC) using survey data from the 2000 Census and the 2006 National Household Survey. The estimates show that the eligible population is uniformly distributed along income classes but the benefit is concentrated among the poor, thus the coverage is also higher among the poor. There seems to be insufficient coverage of the poorest population. The program has targeting errors but they are mostly errors of low intensity.
