    The book presents a selection of the works presented during various encounters held in sites connected with the life of Paolo Mantegazza, aimed at retrieving and valorising his cultural legacy. An eclectic figure - scientist, novelist, anthropologist and politician - Paolo Mantegazza (1831-1910) played a leading role in Italian society and the cultural scene of the late nineteenth century. The contributions of academics from different disciplines enable us to reconstruct both the great variety of the man’s interests and curiosities, and the strict methodological rigour that guided his entire scientific production and is today the most evident sign of his contemporary relevance. Il libro raccoglie una selezione dei lavori presentati in vari incontri tenuti nei luoghi legati alla vicenda biografica di Paolo Mantegazza e che miravano a recuperare e valorizzare la sua eredità culturale. Figura eclettica di scienziato, romanziere, divulgatore, politico, Paolo Mantegazza (1831-1910) ha avuto un ruolo di primo piano nella cultura e nella società italiana della fine del XIX secolo; i contributi di studiosi di diverse discipline consentono di ricostruire sia la grande varietà degli interessi e delle curiosità dell'uomo, sia il profondo rigore metodologico che guida la sua intera produzione scientifica e che rappresenta il segno più forte della sua attualità.

    This book focuses upon an aspect which has been little investigated to date in the poetics of Iosif Brodskij: the rich intertextual network that links his verses to classical literature. Brodskij's intertext never appears as imitation but rather as mimesis, like an inescapable mediation - at times concealed by the presence of cultures diachronically closer, the Russian in the first place - strongly impregnated with meaning and teaching: "(As for creation, the pen has created very little). / But how much light it casts in the night, / the ink, merging with the darkness!". This book proposes moments of reflection on the intense and nuanced relation that connects Brodskij's poetics with the poetics of Aristotle, and the subtle but equally strong links of Brodskij's idea of democracy with that of the organisation of government in Plato's Republic. Pursuing an historic approach, the book delineates the characteristics of Brodskij as a reader of the classics and, at the same time, as a person intimately involved, at an individual and collective level, in the events of Russian culture. In Brodskij's dialogical approach, in particular in relation to ancient classical culture, the lineaments of the poet emerge clearly. Considered in their globality, these reveal inspiration, thought (profound, and strongly impregnated with philosophy), moral rigour (ironic and self-ironising), the renunciation of the display of feelings, and the tension towards an autobiographical writing that is universalised and externalised, a strong and constant link with the narration of myths and, in a manner that is increasingly marked over the time of his life and work, a progressive prevalence of the signs of the classical authors. Lezioni di poesia mette in luce un aspetto finora poco indagato nella poetica di Iosif Brodskij, la ricca rete intertestuale che lega i suoi versi alle letterature classiche. L'intertesto brodskiano mai appare come "imitazione", piuttosto come "mimesis", come una mediazione, talvolta celata dalla presenza di culture diacronicamente più vicine, in primis quella russa ineludibile, fortemente impregnata di senso e insegnamento: «(Creando, ben poco la penna ha creato). / Ma quanta luce dà nella notte, / con il buio fondendosi, l'inchiostro!». Lezioni di poesia propone momenti di riflessioni sull'intenso e sfumato rapporto che lega poetica brodskiana e poetica aristotelica, e sui sottili ma altrettanto forti nessi dell'idea di democrazia in Brodskij con quella dell'organizzazione di governo nella Repubblica di Platone. Tramite un percorso storico il volume delinea i tratti di Brodskij, lettore dei classici e, contemporaneamente, persona intimamente coinvolta, sul piano individuale e collettivo, nelle vicende della cultura russa. Nel "porsi dialogico" di Brodskij, in particolare nei confronti dell'antica cultura classica, si fanno emergere chiari i lineamenti del poeta, che nel loro insieme evocano ispirazione, pensiero (profondo e fortemente impregnato di filosofia), rigore morale (ironico e autoironico), rinuncia all'esibizione dei sentimenti, tensione a una scrittura autobiografica "universalizzata" e "estraniata", forte e costante legame con la narrazione dei miti e, in maniera sempre più rimarcabile nel tempo dell'esistenza e dell'opera, un progressivo prevalere dei "segni" degli autori classici.

    This book sets itself specific objective: namely, the consideration of the design of the river landscape as a cultural and social investment. The aim is at "control" of a landscape which is transformed while preserving harmonious forms and structures that are sustainable from an ecological and environmental aspect, and is continually redesigned on the basis of human requirements, without overwhelming nature. The need for hydraulic defence of the rivers thus becomes an opportunity for a "third landscape" project, a chance to transform "non-places" into "places". Il volume mira ad uno specifico obiettivo: arrivare a considerare il progetto del paesaggio fluviale un investimento culturale, sociale, puntando ad un "controllo" di un paesaggio che si trasforma mantenendo forme armoniche e strutture sostenibili sotto il profilo ecologico-ambientale e si ridisegna continuamente sulla base delle esigenze dell'uomo, senza per questo sopraffare la natura. L'esigenza di difesa idraulica fluviale, prima ancora che l'infrastruttura, diviene così una opportunità per un progetto di "paesaggio terzo", occasione per trasformare in "luoghi" i "non luoghi".

    The work addresses the subject of the contemporary urban park, interpreted as an ethical and aesthetic space. Ethical in the proper sense of the word, that is conforming to the character of the place, and aesthetic in the sense of an urban space subject to qualitative valuations and the ambit of production of aesthetic experience in a real environment animated by the presence of nature. Tracing a critical itinerary through the history of the art of parks and gardens and the current trends of landscape architecture in Europe, the book sustains the theory that the ethics of creating parks always implies a meditation on aesthetic principles and values. The variety of current production is read through several original keys to interpretation: an historic overview of the ethical and aesthetic models, the identification of species of parks and the definition of ethical/aesthetic categories. The final section proposes a modus operandi that adopts the narrative dimension as a guideline for design. Published in the volume is the doctoral thesis that received the Grinzane Cavour – Giardini Hanbury special prize in 2006. L'opera affronta il tema del progetto contemporaneo di parco urbano, interpretato come spazio etico ed estetico. Etico, nel senso proprio dell'etimo, cioè conforme al luogo, ed estetico, come spazio urbano soggetto a valutazioni qualitative e ambito di produzione di esperienza estetica in un ambiente reale animato dalla presenza della natura. Tracciando un percorso critico attraverso la storia dell'arte dei giardini e dei parchi e gli orientamenti attuali dell'architettura del paesaggio in Europa, si sostiene la tesi che l'etica del fare parchi implica sempre e comunque una riflessione su principi e valori estetici. La varietas della produzione attuale viene letta attraverso alcune originali chiavi di lettura: un quadro storico dei modelli etici ed estetici, la individuazione di specie di parchi, la definizione di categorie etiche/estetiche. La parte conclusiva propone un modus operandi che assume la dimensione narrativa come indirizzo progettuale. Il volume pubblica la tesi di dottorato che ha ricevuto il Premio speciale Grinzane Cavour – Giardini Hanbury nel 2006.

    Main description: Die kurze Zeit des neronischen Prinzipates ist, nicht zuletzt aus der Sicht späterer Rezeption, eine der herausragenden Phasen römischer Literatur und Kultur. Gleichwohl verfolgen die einzelnen altertumswissenschaftlichen Disziplinen dabei ganz unterschiedliche Problemstellungen. Der vorliegende Band, der die Ergebnisse eines interdisziplinären Symposions vom 3.-6. Mai 2001 in der Vila Vigoni (Menaggio) versammelt, sucht erstmals übergreifend nach einer kulturellen Klammer. Den Focus bildet dabei die auffallend häufige Verfahrensweise einer "Verkehrung". Für die unterschiedlichen Bereiche, von der neronischen Literatur bis zu archäologischen Zeugnissen, wird der Frage nachgegangen, inwieweit mit der Struktur der "Verkehrung" ein übergreifendes Leitkonzept der Zeit erfaßt ist. Dabei zeigt sich, daß viele Einzelphänomene unter diesem Paradigma in ganz neuer Weise verständlich werden

    Main description: Das Alexiusleben des mailändischen Dichters Bonvesin da la Riva ist in vollständiger Form nur in der Handschrift 93 der Biblioteca Trivulziana vom Ende des 14. Jahrhunderts überliefert. Während die früheren Editoren (Contini und Gökçen) darum bemüht waren, das Original des 13. Jahrhunderts zu rekonstruieren, wird hier erstmals eine interpretative Edition dieses wichtigen Zeugnisses des Altlombardischen vorgelegt. Die Einleitung, die Anmerkungen und der vollständige Wort- und Formenindex erschließen den Text in sprachhistorischer Sicht. Der Band bietet zugleich die Grundlage für eine literaturhistorische Einordnung Bonvesins als eines der ersten großen italienischen Erzähler

    Main description: The only complete extant version of the life of Saint Alexius by the Milanese author Bonvesin da la Riva is to be found in Manuscript 93 of the Biblioteca Trivulziana from the late 14th century. Whereas earlier editors (Contini and Gökçen) were concerned to reconstruct the 13th century original, the present volume provides the first interpretive edition of this important Old Lombardic text. The historical linguistic aspect of the text is covered in the introduction, the notes, and a complete index of words and word forms. In terms of literary history, the volume also provides the foundations for an appreciation of Bonvesin as one of the first great Italian narrative artists
