    Bringing in the Americans is the first task for the UN-COP-15 for the Danish government along with its EU partners. The key contents of the EU's climate leadership towards the climate conference are assessed, such as the -20% by 2020 reduction target, the effort sharing agreement and reforms of the European Trading Scheme. EU climate leadership is both based on strong public support and economic features such as a lower energy intensity of production than the U.S. The EU and Danish strategy converge in promoting the concept of a "low-carbon economy", based on first-mover advantage exports in renewables technology, such as wind power. The contents of the "Danish example" are assessed; decoupling economic growth and emissions within a "lowcarbon economy"-storyline. U.S. and EU policies diverged under the Bush administration that favored voluntary domestic measures towards industries and unilateral technology-based partnerships. The factors influencing the next President's climate policy such as increased support in public opinion, bottom-up developments among states, cities and in the business community are assessed, and so are factors that constrain a national climate policy, such as a high domestic reliance on coal. The dominant policy alternatives in the U.S. debate are evaluated. Ideas such as a carbon tax, emissions trading, a techno-optimist "Manhattan Project on Climate Change" and a 5-10x spending scenario in energy R&D are explored in terms of their political feasibility. The analysis indicates that a national cap-and-trade could emerge, but the legislative deliberations to establish such a policy could protract beyond COP-15. Transatlantic convergence in emissions trading is however very likely in the next Kyoto commitment period from 2012 to 2017. The paper evaluates the work of Kyoto critics in terms of political feasibility and related Post-Kyoto proposals to empirical policy developments among the annex-I countries. Scholars have argued that an international framework for R&D in clean energy are needed, as past R&D efforts in clean energy has reduced the costs of electricity from solar panels. The section then discusses current energy R&D trends in the U.S. and in the OECD. Lowering the cost of key technologies could help to speed up diffusion of non-fossil-fuel sources, and would be a new form of directional leadership in climate policy, to be undertaken by the Annex-I countries.

The essays collected in this volume place Browne’s works in unexpected contexts – in Holland, Poland and Germany, in Restoration politics, in publishing history and medical theory. It presents new research into his reputation in the later seventeenth century, his manuscripts, medical dissertation, association with the Hartlib circle and habits of revision. Essays on familiar works place them in new light, while readings of his letters, notebooks, and lesser works broaden our understanding of Browne as a writer. The result is a fuller picture of Browne’s significance in seventeenth-century European culture.     Die national motivierte Judenfeindschaft beginnt in Deutschland nicht erst mit Richard Wagner oder den antisemitischen Schriften, die im Kaiserreich ab 1871 entstanden sind. Wie die Untersuchung zeigt, haben schon die Schriftsteller der romantischen Generation im frühen 19. Jahrhundert ihre Vorstellung von einem „deutschen Wesen“ in rigoroser Abgrenzung zu angeblichen jüdischen Charaktereigenschaften entworfen. Marco Puschner, Nürnberger Zeitung. Die Studie untersucht auf der Basis der neueren Nationalismus-Forschung das Verhältnis der deutschen romantischen Schriftsteller zum Judentum. Die von Historiographie und Soziologie forcierte Einsicht, dass Nationen keine naturwüchsigen Gebilde sind, sondern als soziale Konstruktionen verstanden werden müssen, wirft auch ein neues Licht auf die in der Literaturwissenschaft oft marginalisierten antijüdischen Äußerungen von Romantikern wie Arnim, Brentano, Arndt oder Adam Müller. Die Denunziation des angeblichen „jüdischen Wesens“ dient den Romantikern dazu, ein positives Gegenbild des „Deutschen“ zu entwickeln. Dies geschieht in Preußen gerade in einer Phase, als die lange unterdrückte jüdische Minderheit durch das Emanzipationsedikt von 1812 endlich eine bessere rechtliche Stellung erhält. Die genannten Autoren sind entschiedene Gegner dieses Prozesses, in essayistischen und fiktionalen Texten versuchen sie, die Unvereinbarkeit des „Deutschen“ mit dem „Jüdischen“ darzulegen und die Bedrohung der deutschen Gemeinschaft durch den jüdischen Eindringling aufzuzeigen. Damit ist also bereits bei den Romantikern im frühen 19. Jahrhundert eine national motivierte Judenfeindschaft und mithin eine antisemitische Gesinnung zu konstatieren.

    The current downturn in the American and Western European economies, combined with increasing regulatory pressure on private equity throughout the developed world, made emerging markets an attractive destination for private equity. As part of the emerging markets, Central and Eastern Europe's (CEE) private equity industry was an accidental beneficiary of this development. The attractiveness of the CEE markets was also boosted by the fact that value added resulted from the organic growth of the companies, rather than from leverage utilisation. As a result of the crisis in autumn 2008, the growth financed by loans itself became a synonym of the risk. Consequently the CEE countries as parts of emerging markets were handicapped, irrespective of the already applied greatest cautiousness of investors and the relatively deteriorated availability and higher interest rates of provided loans in the region. Since the majority of high volume capital raised recently by private equity funds in the CEE region still expected to be invested, it is not likely that the cutback of private equity financing in the CEE countries will be as radical as it was in the developed markets. The Golden Age of the private equity investments in the CEE region, however, ended in the autumn of 2008. The paper forecasts the future developments of the private equity industry in the CEE region, based on a detailed analysis of the five years' tendencies. The paper reviews within an international surrounding the changes in the volume and structure of raised regional funds, as well as the actual investment trends by the related countries and sectors. The study provides several examples for the applied individual corporate level investments strategies of private equity investors in the CEE region. The chosen exit routes and returns received by regional private equity investors are also illustrated with actual examples. This is the first major investigation of Camus’s prose fiction to explore the developing presentation of women, from the author’s earliest writings to his last, unfinished novel. Avoiding the traditional relegation of this subject to an emotional or private sphere, it traces Camus’s intellectual development in order to demonstrate the centrality of this subject to Camus’s work as a whole. If the Absurd, constructed over the body of the “real” woman, liberates the writer to follow a “true path” of literary creation, the impending loss of his Algerian homeland impells a return to “all that he had not been free to choose”, the ties of blood. These conflictual and unresolved ties are here investigated, in conjunction with the presentation of mythical female figures expressing Camus’s darkest fears, partly voiced in other writings, concerning that “other” Algeria for which he would never fight. Exploring complex interconnections between sexuality, “race” and colonialism, this volume is pertinent to all who are interested in the writings of Camus, particularly those seeking relevant new ways of approaching his work
