The author concludes that Islam is only one of many factors shaping women's lives in the Middle East. Moreover she points out the need to differentiate.     The author examines anthropological discourse on the Arab world, being concerned with the relationship of the anthropology of the Arab world to the study of the region, on the one hand, and to anthropology on the other. The author concludes, that the zones of theorizing within Middle East anthropology are few. According to the author, anthropological discourse on the Arab world is to open up, the following issues will have to be faced: "State violence and repression, military occupation, poverty, migration, and cultural imperialism ... We will also have to break with the anthropological redisposition to the history of interaction between this part of the world and others." (DÜI-Mjr)

    The author defines social historians as bridge builders: through the investigation of the lives of ordinary people, they seek to span the big structural changes and human realities. In her study the author points out that big changes of Europe were not automatically replicated in the Arab world and names the Arab world's big changes. Then she displays how social groups, peasants, merchants, artisans and women, have been looked at by social historians of the Arab world. The author concludes that the field of Arab social history has been undeveloped, as social historians have not, as mentioned above, worked as bridge builders, but have tried to comprehend and evaluate the major political, economic and social changes without knowing much about the people who made and lived these changes.
