    Following a path established in Robert Warshow’s chapter on “The Gangster as Tragic Hero,” this article attempts to look at connections between the ancient genre of tragedy and contemporary mob movies. On the one hand, there are structural parallels when it comes to plot, which adheres to the formula of decline, brought about by erroneous judgments. On the other hand, mobsters are often portrayed as powerful, ruthless tyrants who retain a kind of Shakespearean grandeur. Using examples from films by Michael Mann, Martin Scorsese, and Ridley Scott, my argument links contemporary American crime drama to the origins of tragedy (as laid out by Aristotle in Poetics) and some canonical examples of the genre, like The Merchant of Venice. Having established this theoretical framework, I shall offer a detailed discussion of Martin Scorsese’s The Departed, one of the most successful mob movies in recent years. In this film, Scorsese toys with the tragic genre both on the level of plot and with regard to his flawed characters, who struggle to overcome guilt and tragic hubris, yet cannot escape their inevitable tragic downfall. ; www.aspeers.com/2010/schwanebeck

    In a significant way Schlöndorff's films "Die verlorene Ehre der Katharina Blum" and "Die Stille nach dem Schuss" reflect the change in intellectual discourse about politics in Germany after 1945, presenting it with different aesthetic means. The film "Die Verlorene Ehre der Katharina Blum" is a reconstruction of the ideological situation in 1968 in which Schlöndorff in close cooperation with Böll takes a provocative position. In "Die Stille nach dem Schuss", however, Schlöndorff outlines the public discussion about the political and ideological antagonisms in the former GDR and the coming to terms with its Stasi-past after 1989. Schlöndorff also critically evaluates his own position as a Western intellectual towards the GDR and in Germany after reunification. In contrast, the recent films "Der Baader Meinhof Komplex" and "Die innere Sicherheit" open up new perspectives on the extraparliamentary opposition and the Baader Meinhof group. Eichinger´s and Edel´s film puts the story into a historical context and denounces all heroism, whereas Petzold´s film shows the consequences of this political movement focusing on people´s private life in a way characteristic of the so-called "Berlin School". ; Schlöndorffs Filme "Die verlorene Ehre der Katharina Blum" und "Die Stille nach dem Schuss" spiegeln in signifikanter Weise einen Wandel des intellektuellen Diskurses über Politik in Deutschland nach 1945, zugleich konturieren sie ihn mit unterschiedlichen ästhetischen Mitteln. "Die Verlorene Ehre der Katharina Blum" rekonstruiert die ideologische Situation des Jahres 1968, in der Schlöndorff in enger Zusammenarbeit mit Böll eine markante Position bezieht, "Die Stille nach dem Schuss" skizziert demgegenüber eine Bewusstseinslage, in der erstmals nach der Wende des Jahres 1989 die politischen und ideologischen Widersprüche innerhalb der früheren DDR und die Aufarbeitung der Stasivergangenheit offen thematisiert werden. Dabei beleuchtet Schlöndorff zugleich kritisch die eigene Haltung als westlicher Intellektueller gegenüber der DDR und im vereinigten Deutschland. Dagegen machen die neueren Filme "Der Baader Meinhof Komplex" und "Die innere Sicherheit" auf je unterschiedliche Weise die Neubewertung der Außerparlamentarischen Opposition und der Baader Meinhof Gruppe deutlich, die ebenfalls nach 1989 einsetzt. Dabei führt der Film von Eichinger und Edel zu einer Historisierung und ideologiekritischen Entheroisierung, seine Präsentation einer Phase der politischen Opposition in Deutschland wird mit Mitteln des action-Films entfaltet. Petzolds Film dagegen zeigt die Folgen dieser Bewegung in der für die "Berliner Schule" typischen Konzentration auf das Private.

    In his controversial first book "In Stahlgewittern" (1920) Ernst Jünger ascribes meaning to World War I not explicitly in ideological terms, as much as indirectly by using a highly metaphorical language. Jünger codes war in 32 image sequences in the fields of nature, human practice, culture, and anthropomorphism. Jünger's metaphors can be differentiated into various categories and characterized by their density, their relation, their interference and their variation. When two warring fractions, then, are described by the same iconic motifs, their oppositions seem to vanish. And when metaphors are confronted with their real referents, with signifying names and stereotyped jargons, their artificial character and epistemological function come to light. The implicit meanings these metaphors generate should not be simplified as celebratory aestheticising, nor refuted as fascist ideology. The individual codes are unequally subtle, they generate different semantics and they connote deviating political positions; they intersect and conflict. "In Stahlgewittern" they are both an expression of an ideological attitude as well as a symptom of profound unsettlement. ; In seinem umstrittenen Erstlingswerk, "In Stahlgewittern" (1920), schreibt Ernst Jünger dem Ersten Weltkrieg weniger explizit einen ideologischen Sinn zu, als er ihn indirekt durch eine intensiv metaphorische Sprache mit Bedeutungen auflädt. Jünger codiert den Krieg in 32 bildlichen Sequenzen, die sich in den Feldern der Natur, der menschlichen Praxis, der Kultur und der Anthropomorphie verorten. Diese Sprachbilder lassen sich nach Typen differenzieren und in ihrer Dichte, Relation, Interferenz und Variation beschreiben. Dadurch dass dieselben Bilder auf beide Kriegsparteien angewandt werden, relativieren sie deren Gegensatz. Indem die Metaphern mit ihren realen Entsprechungen, mit sprechenden Namen und mit stereotypen Jargons konfrontiert werden, tritt ihre Künstlichkeit zutage und wird ihre epistemische Funktion deutlich. Die implizite Bedeutungs-Zuschreibung, die diese Metaphoriken erzielen, ist keineswegs einsinnig als Ästhetisierung oder Verherrlichung bzw. als kohärente faschistische Ideologie zu fassen. Die einzelnen Codes sind ungleichmäßig subtil, sie erzeugen verschiedene Bedeutungen, und sie konnotieren abweichende politische Positionen; sie geraten miteinander in Überschneidung und zueinander in Widerspruch. Es entsteht eine widerständige Semantik, die als Symptom einer Verunsicherung lesbar ist.

    The reading of Arnold Hauser's work, in particular his book "Der Manierismus", written in 1964, that deals with Spanish literature, allows us to overcome the usual classifications found in manuals of this area based only on chronological data. Hauser calls "Mannerism" the crisis of the Renaissance, distinguishing it from European Baroque movements. Some of the Spanish authors and their works from the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries respond to the characteristics of Mannerism, if one takes into account their perspectivism, the presence of paradox, their cerebral construction, the discovery of the modern reader, their autonomy as literary works, the overcoming of the classical genders, the use of dialog, etc, and can, therefore, be seen as the basis of the literary Modernity. ; A leitura da obra de Arnold Hauser, particularmente de seu livro "Der Manierismus", de 1964, ao voltar-se para a história da literatura espanhola, nos permitiu superar as habituais catalogações embasadas apenas na cronologia, que predominam nos manuais dessa especialidade. Hauser chama de "Maneirismo" a crise da Renascença e distingue esse movimento dos Barrocos europeus. Alguns autores e obras espanholas dos séculos XVI e XVII, graças ao seu perspectivismo, à presença do paradoxo, à sua construção cerebral, à descoberta do leitor moderno, à sua autonomia como obras literárias, à superação dos gêneros clássicos, ao uso do diálogo, etc., respondem às características desse Maneirismo e, assim sendo, podem ser lidas como fundamentos da Modernidade literária.

    The purpose of this study was to evaluate the level and composition of bacteria and fungi in the indoor air of an Italian office building equipped with a heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system. Airborne bacteria and fungi were collected in three open-space offices during different seasons. The microbial levels in the outdoor air, supply air diffusers, fan coil air flow and air treatment unit humidification water tank were used to evaluate the influence of the HVAC system on indoor air quality (IAQ). A medium–low level of bacterial contamination (50– 500 CFU/m3) was found in indoor air. Staphylococcus and Micrococcus were the most commonly found genera, probably due to human presence. A high fungal concentration was measured due to a flood that occurred during the winter. The indoor seasonal distribution of fungal genera was related to the fungal outdoor distribution. Significant seasonal and daily variation in airborne microorganisms was found, underlining a relationship with the frequency of HVAC system switching on/off. The results of this monitoring highlight the role of the HVAC system on IAQ and could be useful to better characterise bacterial and fungal population in the indoor air of office buildings.
