    Main description: La diversité de la nature et des réalisations humaines est devenue une valeur incontestable des sciences naturelles, humaines et sociales. La diversité de la planète fascine. Elle nous invite aussi à repenser une éthique de la diversité, suite à l'accroissement des menaces sur la biodiversité, à l'uniformisation de la production des biens culturels et à l'hostilité à l'égard de celui qui est perçu comme "différent" de la part d'un "nous" majoritaire qui se considère comme homogène. Cette éthique de la diversité ne vise pas à "préserver" la diversité, mais à la construire, la produire, la réinventer de manière permanente et créative. Ainsi, la diversité n'est pas comprise comme la différence par rapport à un élément commun. Elle relève de la multiplicité et de la variété naturelle ou humaine, dans laquelle nous vivons en rapport avec tous et avec tout. En somme, il s'agit de la responsabilité qui nous incombe de nous désidentifier, de nous différencier, de nous diversifier nous-mêmes, tout en prenant conscience, au sein de ce processus, de notre relation indissoluble avec tous les autres êtres naturels et humains. -- Cet ouvrage international réunit des auteurs issus de diverses disciplines, comme la philosophie, la musicologie, la psychologie, les sciences politiques, le droit, la biologie, la physique, la chimie et les nanosciences. Auf der Grundlage sowohl des gesamten bisher bekannten Corpus des Kommentators als auch zahlreicher neuer griechischer und arabischer Quellen unternimmt es Marwan Rashed, Alexanders Platz in der Geschichte der Metaphysik zu bestimmen. Alexanders Versuch, die Gegenständlichkeit der aristotelischen Form zu begründen, bringt die Phase des hellenistischen Peripatos zu einem Abschluss und stellt zugleich die Geburt des mittelalterlichen Aristotelismus dar. This book is the first study of the ontological system of Alexander of Aphrodisias (floruit c. 200 AD), famous for his commentaries on the works of Aristotle. By drawing not only on the entire known corpus of the commentator's works, but also on numerous new Greek and Arabic sources, Marwan Rashed aimsat defining Alexander’s place in the history of metaphysics. Alexander’s attempt to substantiate the objectivity of the Aristotelian form draws down the curtain on the phase of the Hellenistic peripatos, at the same time marking the beginning of medieval Aristotelianism.

    Of the 218 letters, 126 belong to correspondence with the Imperial Count Ernst Christoph von Manteuffel, a dedicated patron of the supporters of Christian Wolff and the head of the Berlin chapter of the Society of Alethophiles. In Berlin and Leipzig great hopes were placed in the Prussian heir apparent Friedrich II, whom many saw a kind of Platonian 0philosopher king0 who would help elevate reason and Wolffian philosophy to new heights. The letters document the development of a rationalistic strain in Gottsched's sermons. They also provide insight into the satires of Wolff's opponents written by L.A.V. Gottsched. Gottsched's speeches concerning Martin Opitz and the 0book printing anniversary0 (Buchdruckjubiläum) found strong resonance in the correspondence and inspired letters concerning similar undertakings. Jakob Brucker's letters illuminate the planning and creation of the 0Bilder-sal0, a contemporary history of notable scholars that featured biographies and portraits, and which came to include Gottsched and his wife. Von den 218 Briefen gehören 126 zur Korrespondenz mit dem Reichsgrafen Ernst Christoph von Manteuffel, dem engagierten Mäzen der Wolffianer und Haupt der Berliner Alethophilengesellschaft. In Berlin wie in Leipzig setzte man die größten Erwartungen in den preußischen Thronfolger Friedrich II. Man sah in ihm den Roi-philosophe, der der Vernunft in Gestalt der Wolffschen Philosophie zum Sieg verhelfen wird. Die Briefe dokumentieren die Entstehung von Gottscheds vernunftgemäßer Predigtlehre und den Umgang mit den Satiren auf die Wolffgegner, die L. A. V. Gottsched verfaßt hatte. Gottscheds Reden auf Martin Opitz und auf das Buchdruckjubiläum fanden im Briefwechsel eine starke Resonanz und inspirierten Korrespondenten zu ähnlichen Unternehmungen. Die Briefe Jakob Bruckers gewähren Einblick in Planung und Entstehung des Bilder=sals, des großen Porträt-Biographiewerkes zur zeitgenössischen Gelehrtengeschichte, in das bald auch das Ehepaar Gottsched Eingang fand.

Auf der Grundlage sowohl des gesamten bisher bekannten Corpus des Kommentators als auch zahlreicher neuer griechischer und arabischer Quellen unternimmt es Marwan Rashed, Alexanders Platz in der Geschichte der Metaphysik zu bestimmen. Alexanders Versuch, die Gegenständlichkeit der aristotelischen Form zu begründen, bringt die Phase des hellenistischen Peripatos zu einem Abschluss und stellt zugleich die Geburt des mittelalterlichen Aristotelismus dar. This book is the first study of the ontological system of Alexander of Aphrodisias (floruit c. 200 AD), famous for his commentaries on the works of Aristotle. By drawing not only on the entire known corpus of the commentator's works, but also on numerous new Greek and Arabic sources, Marwan Rashed aimsat defining Alexander’s place in the history of metaphysics. Alexander’s attempt to substantiate the objectivity of the Aristotelian form draws down the curtain on the phase of the Hellenistic peripatos, at the same time marking the beginning of medieval Aristotelianism.

    Biographies of poets are often rich in human interest; manuals of literary history can be full of broad insight and suggestive parallels. But it is all too easy to let the study of French poetry drift towards lives, loves and -isms and away from the appreciation of its supremely creative use of language. Born of the belief that the proper study of poetry is the poem itself, this book seeks to concentrate on the poetic process at work on the page. Its aim is to encourage the student and the general reader to penetrate the textual richness of modern French verse where verbal artistry combines so powerfully with imaginative vision. The full introduction deals with such questions as metre and rhythm, uses of verse-form, sonority, imagery and structure, studying them not in the abstract but in particular, 'living' contexts. This leads on to detailed commentaries on individual poems illustrating, after the consideration of the problems of reading poetry in general, how one might approach poems as artistic unities in their own right. These guided commentaries are essentially an invitation to the reader to explore certain paths into the poem for himself. They do not provide a wrapped, sealed and delivered explanation; they call for and depend upon the reader's active involvement. Both the illustrations of the introduction and the commentary texts are taken from the fourteen poets who feature in the companion volume to this work, An Anthology of Modern French Poetry. In this way a complete overlap is created, and one is invited to pass from preliminary exercises in appreciation into the wider, more stimulating world of a fully balanced anthology

    This anthology is the companion volume to The Appreciation of Modern French Poetry, the aim of which was to give detailed preliminary help with the problems of poetic appreciation. The fourteen poets represented here provide a varied and exciting introduction to what is probably the richest century of French poetry, from 1850 to 1950. Hugo, the colossus of the nineteenth century, whose work gives new resonance and vitality to imaginative vision, opens the anthology, and Michaux, the most individual and 'modern' of twentieth-century poets in that he bridges the gap between poetry and contemporary science, closes it. Almost all the major poets of the period are included: Nerval, Baudelaire, Mallarmé, Verlaine, Rimbaud and Laforgue from the second half of the nineteenth century; Valéry, Apollinaire, Supervielle and Eluard in the twentieth. The lesser known Cros and Desnos, fresh and spontaneous poets with an immediate appeal, invite a new look at the lyric traditions of french verse and offer an attractive new avenue for study. The choice of poems, dictated above all by their individual poetic value, reflects also the trends of recent criticism and the tastes of present-day readers. The texts are all accompanied by full notes, which not only explain local difficulties of vocabulary, syntax and expression, but lead the reader directly into the heart of the richness of theme, style and interpretation. These will prove of value not only to the student who is grappling with the basics of french verse, or is anxious to give depth to his familiarity, but to the general reader seeking to rekindle his enjoyment of French poetry. In addition, there are introductions to each poet summarizing the essence of his art, useful suggestions for further reading, and groups of dicussion topics to stimulate comparative insights and a wider responsiveness
