These delightful poems—by turns whimsical, beautiful, and vulgar—seem to have primarily survived because they were attributed to Virgil. But in David R. Slavitt’s imaginative and appealing translations, they stand firmly on their own merits. Slavitt brings to this little-known body of verse a fresh voice, vividly capturing the tone and style of the originals while conveying a lively sense of fun

Preface -- Introduction -- Preamble: imminent doom? -- Crisis in the Roman state -- Virgil -- The Aeneid -- Summary of the Aeneid -- Aeneid VIII -- Style -- Rhythm, metre -- Reception -- Some further reading -- Aeneid VIII: the Latin text -- Abbreviations -- Notes on the text -- Index 1: literary, grammatical and metrical terms -- Index 2: names, etc -- Vocabulary. "Book VIII of the Aeneid presents a crucial turning point in the mythological foundation of Rome, with clear political resonances for the future Augustan regime. Set on the verge of war between the Latins and Aeneas' Trojan forces, it describes Aeneas' visit to the future site of Rome, where he enlists the help of the Arcadian King Evander for the forthcoming war.In confirmation of the gods' support for Aeneas, his mother Venus presents her son with new armour, including a shield depicting key events in the future history of Rome. Their climax is Augustus' victory at Actium over the forces of Mark Antony and Cleopatra. This new edition makes the Latin text accessible to students, with commentary notes providing ample linguistic help, explanation of difficult words and phrases, a glossary of grammatical and literary terminology, and a full list of vocabulary and proper names. The in-depth introduction sets the work in its literary and historical context, and provides an overview of Virgil's metrical and stylistic points."--

Preliminary Material /Nicholas Horsfall -- Text and translation /Nicholas Horsfall -- Commentary /Nicholas Horsfall -- English Index /Nicholas Horsfall -- Latin Index /Nicholas Horsfall -- Index of Names /Nicholas Horsfall -- Supplements to Mnemosyne /J. M. Bremer , L. F. Janssen , H. Pinkster , H. W. Pleket , C. J. Ruijgh and P. H. Schrijvers. This commentary was begun in 1967, but most of the period from 1971 to 1996 was spent on work that was in some sense an essential preliminary to a detailed study of Aeneid 7. The work will serve as a guide to recent (and future) work on Virgilian language, grammar, syntax and style. Recent approaches to the text have been, where possible, taken into account, with sympathy but without jargon. Virgil's sources, in verse and prose, have been studied with special care and the commentary presents a coherent approach to Virgil's view of Italian religion, antiquities and topography. Unusually full indexing is intended to further the book's use as a guide to many aspects of Augustan poetic idiom. There is a text independent of recent editions and a precise, prose translation

Preliminary Material -- AENEID 11 TEXT AND TRANSLATION -- COMMENTARY -- CAMILLA AND THE EPIC CYCLE -- DORMITATNE MARO QUOQUE? -- ENGLISH INDEX -- LATIN INDEX -- PROPER NAMES -- SUPPLEMENTS TO MNEMOSYNE /H. Pinkster , H.S. Versnel , D.M. Schenkeveld , P.H. Schrijvers and S.R. Slings. This is the first comprehensive commentary on Aeneid 11. The commentary treats fully matters of linguistic and textual interpretation, metre and prosody, grammar, lexicon and idiom, of Roman behaviour, social and ritual, as well as Virgil’s sources and the literary tradition. New critical approaches and developments in Virgilian studies have been taken into account with economy and fairness. The Latin text is presented with a facing English translation. The commentary is followed by an appendix on Penthesilea and the Epic Cycle and a second appendix which discusses the weaknesses of Aeneid 11. The book concludes with English and Latin indices. In approach and learning, this commentary continues Nicholas Horsfall’s impressive work as a commentator and will advance our understanding of the Aeneid and the poet Virgil

"Although Virgil's Aeneid was one of the most widely admired works of the European Middle Ages, the first complete translation to appear in any form of English was Gavin Douglas's magisterial verse rendering into Older Scots, completed in 1513, which he called the 'Eneados'. It included not only the twelve books of Virgil's original, but a thirteenth added by the Italian humanist scholar Maphaeus Vegius, and lively, original prologues to every book.

There is a text independent of recent editions and a precise, prose translation.

The in-depth introduction sets the work in its literary and historical context, and provides an overview of Virgil's metrical and stylistic points."--...

These delightful poems-by turns whimsical, beautiful, and vulgar-seem to have primarily survived because they were attributed to Virgil. But in David R. Slavitt's imaginative and appealing translations, they stand firmly on their own merits. Slavitt brings to this little-known body of verse a fresh voice, vividly capturing the tone and style of the originals while conveying a lively sense of fun.

"This is the first intermediate-student edition of a selection from Virgil's Aeneid XI. Lines 1?224, 498?521, 532?596, 648?689 and 725?835 are included as Latin text with an accompanying commentary and vocabulary. Focusing on a deliberately concise extract from the original, this edition is designed to be manageable for students reading the text for the first time while also perfectly encapsulating the interest of the longer work and inspiring further study of it. A detailed introduction explains points of historical and stylistic interest, encompassing the whole of Book XI, including sections omitted here from the Latin. In Book XI Pallas, the warrior son of Evander who was killed by Turnus, is buried, amid the mourning of his father and the Trojans. After a truce to collect and bury the dead on both sides, fighting resumes, during which the warrior-maiden Camilla battles bravely for the Latins before being killed. The events of the book take up just four days: Pallas' funeral occupies the first; the second and third are devoted (briefly) to the truce and burials; the fourth, taking up the second half of the book, is concerned with Camilla's aristeia , in which she is likened to an Amazon."--...

Focusing on a deliberately concise extract from the original, this edition is designed to be manageable for students reading the text for the first time while also perfectly encapsulating the interest of the longer work and inspiring further study of it. A detailed introduction explains points of historical and stylistic interest, encompassing the whole of Book X, including sections omitted here from the Latin. In Book X, the story moves from a council of the gods, via a depiction of Aeneas's return by sea to his beleaguered Trojan camp, to a bloody field of battle. We see Aeneas for the first time as a heroic warrior, but also afflicted by the searing pain of loss as the young son of his new ally, entrusted to him by his father, is killed. Aeneas is for now cheated of his revenge, a revenge which is the preoccupation of the rest of the poem. He does, however, slay the son of a champion of the opposition and then the champion himself, in scenes which re-emphasise that pain. The heart of the book, where Aeneas and his allies join the fray, constitutes the selection presented here. It is an immensely powerful confrontation between violence and compassion, cruelty and nobility."--...

Focusing on a deliberately concise extract from the original, this edition is designed to be manageable for students reading the text for the first time while also perfectly encapsulating the interest of the longer work and inspiring further study of it. A detailed introduction explains points of historical and stylistic interest. Book VIII of the Aeneid is remarkable for the diversity of its subject matter. Aeneas travels upriver to the site where Rome will be founded. He meets King Evander, who tells him the dramatic story of Hercules and Cacus and shows him round 'Rome' before it is Rome. Aeneas' mother makes new armour for him and at the end of the book we see him brandishing the shield whose centrepiece is the triumph of Augustus. The selection presented here focuses on Evander and Hercules, and concludes with the fatal moment when Aeneas takes Evander's son Pallas to war. Its vivid narrative, human characters and larger-than-life heroes and villains are compelling reading."--...

Book XII brings Virgil's Aeneid to a close, as the long-delayed single combat between Aeneas and Turnus ends with Turnus' death - a finale that many readers find more unsettling than triumphant. In this, the first detailed single-volume commentary on the book in any language, Professor Tarrant explores Virgil's complex portrayal of the opposing champions, his use and transformation of earlier poetry (Homer's in particular) and his shaping of the narrative in its final phases. In addition to the linguistic and thematic commentary, the volume contains a substantial introduction that discusses the larger literary and historical issues raised by the poem's conclusion; other sections include accounts of Virgil's metre, later treatments of the book's events in art and music, and the transmission of the text. The edition is designed for upper-level undergraduates and graduate students and will also be of interest to scholars of Latin literature.
