    Abstract ; The paper’s focus is the archival recovery of one of modernist studies’ (unknown) beginnings, reforging the multifacetedness of the history of modernism and of the early history of the study of modernism. The paper introduces the earliest comprehensive and movement-defining study of modernism. This study is unknown to scholars of modernisms and is thus apt to contribute a new perspective on the beginnings of the concept of modernism’s formation. The study in question is an unpublished PhD thesis written (in English) at the University of Washington and submitted in 1924 – thus preceding Laura Riding and Robert Graves’s A Survey of Modernist Poetry and Edmund Wilson’s Axel’s Castle, which are considered to be the first movement-defining studies of modernism. The paper outlines this unpublished und unknown study and puts it into context by considering it in the light of the earlier critical discussions of modernist painting among other things. Furthermore it investigates the technological aspect of the study’s precarious status of being archived but being unpublished and unknown at the same time. By inquiring more generally into how the status of such texts is influenced by the technological developments of the internet age, the paper reflects on the technological conditions of academic discourse today. Arnesen’s study is the paradigmatic instance of what the paper refers to as the issue of the deep archive.

    Depuis bientôt trois (3) ans, le Docteur Heméry-Hervais SIMA-EYI enseignant et directeur en outre, du Centre d’études pour la littérature gabonaise(CELIG) anime à la faculté des lettres et des sciences humaines, notamment au sein du département des Littératures Africaines de l’Université Omar Bongo, un séminaire intitulé « Littérature et société au Gabon » . Ce séminaire vise à étudier, analyser la littérature gabonaise dans ses rapports apparents avec la société dans laquelle cette littérature est produite. Pour ce faire, le Docteur SIMA-EYI a demandé à ses étudiants de voir, dans l’optique d’un colloque sur la littérature gabonaise , quelle place les institutions littéraires(maisons d’éditions, universités, centres de recherche, ministères, etc.)accordent à la littérature produite dans notre pays . Ainsi, scindée en deux(2) groupes,l’un dirigé par Guy Wilfried IDIATHA et l’autre par Désiré Clitandre DZONTEU, la classe de licence des Littératures Africaines s’est donc penchée sur cet épineux problème. Notre équipe s’est intéressée au groupe bancaire BICIG et son concours littéraire et artistique ; au Théâtre national ; aux maisons d’éditions entre autres, La Maison Gabonaise du Livre, Ndzé, Hilaire Makaya et les éditions du silence ; l’Union des écrivains gabonais(UDEG), l’Ecole Normale supérieure(ENS) et l’organisation des Nations unies pour l’éducation , la science et la culture(UNESCO).     Dans le cadre du Séminaire portant « sur la littérature et la société au Gabon », dirigé par monsieur SIMA EYI Hervais-Eméry, enseignant, Directeur-fondateur du Centre d’Etude en Littérature Gabonaise (CELIG), il a été demandé aux étudiants de faire des recherches et voir quelle place les institutions littéraires du Gabon accordait à la littérature gabonaise. Pour notre groupe, il s’est agit de se rendre dans les institutions telles que le Bureau Régional de l’Agence de la francophonie de l’Afrique Centrale (BRAC), Ministère de la culture, des arts et de l’éducation populaire, La Fondation Raponda WALKER, Le Centre Culturel Français ST- Exupéry de Libreville (CCF), La faculté des lettres et sciences humaines de l’Université Omar Bongo et L’Institut Pédagogique National (IPN). Notre objectif consistait à voir quel traitement ces institutions faisaient de la littérature gabonaise et comment elles s’y prenaient pour faciliter sa vulgarisation et sa promotion.     La situation de la littérature au Gabon a souvent suscité nombre d’interrogations. Généralement perçue comme une littérature nationale jeune, elle ne fait pas pour autant l’économie des débats scientifiques de l’heure sur la littérature en tant qu’institution. Au niveau national, la critique ne l’a pas épargnée. Par rapport à la qualité d’écriture de certaines de ses œuvres, celle-ci a vite réagi. Luc Ngowet, essayiste et critique gabonais, n’a pas tardé à fustiger ce manquement majeur à travers un titre révélateur : « littérature gabonaise : un renouveau en trompe-l’œil. » Magloire Ambourhouët-Bigmann, universitaire et critique gabonais, traduit à son tour cette situation : « La littérature gabonaise suscite toujours d’embarrassantes interrogations : "Existe-t-elle vraiment ?", "Quels sont ses auteurs ?" - silences embarrassés. Même la petite minorité de Gabonais ne doutant pas de la "réalité" de sa littérature la connaît mal. » Mais au delà du livre qui constitue l’élément de base d’une littérature, se constituent autour de celui-ci un ensemble d’acteurs dont les enjeux politiques sont différents les uns des autres. L’analyse sociocritique de la littérature gabonaise envisagée ici, intéresse autant que faire se peut les questions inhérentes aux politiques des acteurs sociaux non écrivains qui, dans leur interaction, se construisent autour de l’œuvre publiée ; c’est-à-dire en amont et en aval de celle-ci. L’autre intérêt soulevé par cette question est le comment s’institutionnalise la littérature au Gabon. Ce que le qualificatif "sociocritique", adjoint au substantif "analyse", nomme ici, c’est en effet, une des tendances ou visions de la sociocritique. Comme le dit Isabelle Tournier : « L’extension internationale de la ou des sociocritique(s) rassemble sous ce terme plusieurs tendances ou écoles, les unes proches de la sociologie de la littérature (Jacques Dubois), d’autres issues de l’analyse des discours (Marc Angenot, Antonio Gómez-Moriana, Régine Robin), d’autres plus préoccupées des fondements d’une ...

    Le thème qui fait l’objet de notre exposé s’intitule : « L’inscription de la folie dans la poésie gabonaise ».Il faut dire que le motif de la folie n’est pas nouveau en littérature ; plusieurs écrivains africains pour ne citer que ceux-là, en ont fait largement écho, lorsqu’ils ont voulu, ,à la naissance de la littérature à l’aurore de la littérature négro-africaine, répondre par le dénie aux propos vaguement racistes que l’homme blanc était parvenu à faire admettre dans les consciences, propos selon lesquels ,l’homme noir serait un grand enfant malade, un fou qu’il fallait à tout prix ramener à la raison au moyen d’un traitement approprié. Aimé CESAIRE reconnaîtra avec un humour noir,comme pour couper de l’herbe au pied du Blanc insolent dans son Cahier d’un retour au pays natal : « Nous nous reconnaissons de la démence précoce, de la folie flamboyante, etc. ». L’oeuvre que nous avons choisi pour notre étude est Patrimoine de Lucie MBA .     Pendant plusieurs décennies, la littérature congolaise s’est fait remarquer au niveau continental. Beaucoup d’auteurs et particulièrement les romanciers ont intéressé la critique littéraire tant qu’ils se sont distingués des autres écrivains africains par leur « façon d’écrire ». Par sa taille et le nombre de ses habitants, le Congo au XXè siècle peut être considéré comme le pays qui a le plus d’écrivains, en particulier les romanciers dont la qualité des oeuvres est manifeste. Et comme l’affirment Alain Rouch et Gérard Clavreuil, "la littérature congolaise compte actuellement parmi les meilleures, les plus prolifiques et les plus homogènes d’Afrique noire"[1] De son côté, Roger Chemain renchérit dans la préface à Tarentelle noire et diable blanc de Sylvain Bemba. Pour lui , le Congo en Afrique francophone « compte le plus fort pourcentage d’écrivains par rapport à l’ensemble de la population »[2]. Parmi les écrivains qui ont marqué l’histoire du roman congolais, on peut citer des noms célèbres tels Jean Malonga, Guy Menga, Sylvain Bemba, Jean Pierre Makouta MBoukou, Henri Lopes, Sony Labou Tansi, Emmanuel Dongala, Tchichélé Tchivéla, Tchicaya U Tam’Si. qui sont devenus aujourd’hui des classiques de la littérature (négro) africaine d’expression française.     The popular medium of the periodical accompanied the subjects of Queen Victoria throughout their lives. It explained their own society to them and opened a window onto the world beyond Britain. The Black Forest was one of the travel destinations that were newly discovered by Victorian tourists in the second half of the 19th century. Periodical articles, reports and stories about the Black Forest reflect the things that fascinated and intrigued British travellers of this less frequented area of Germany. In eight posters students of the English department at the University of Freiburg show the facets of the Black Forest that were introduced to readers in Great Britain between 1840 and 1901: in periodicals for the family, for women and for a young readership. The final poster contrasts this view on the Black Forest from the outside with an inside view taken from the German periodical Die Gartenlaube. While the emphases shift slightly, there are also many similarities to the British view, as the German public newly explored and discovered the Black Forest for itself.

En 2003, un bilan des relations franco-allemandes a été fait lors de cette semaine pour l´anniversaire du traité de l´Elysée, signé entre l´Allemagne et la France, 40 ans plus tôt. Différentes personnalités et intellectuels francais ont participé à cette université. Trois axes ont été définis: La culture comme source de l´amitié franco-allemande;Politiques et médias et l´identité européenne en devenir. ; Mit einem thematisch orientierten, einwöchigen Kompaktprogramm gibt das Frankreich-Zentrum vor allem Berufstätigen und Schülern, die sich für das zeitgenössische Frankreich interessieren, Gelegenheit, ihre Kenntnisse über Frankreich und die französische Sprache zu erweitern und zu vertiefen.     Die österreichische Schriftstellerin Elfriede Jelinek (*1946) gilt als Autorin, die durch die überspitzte Darstellung der männlichen Herrschaft patriarchale Herrschaftsformen kritisiert. Der vorliegende Beitrag analysiert zwei Romane Jelineks der 1980er Jahre aus gendertheoretischer Sicht: Die Ausgesperrten und Die Klavierspielerin. Es wird gezeigt, dass Jelinek über eine einfache Patriarchatskritik hinausgeht, indem sie die männliche Herrschaft ad absurdum führt – sie führt symbolisch kastrierte Männlichkeiten als Persiflage einer traditionellen Männlichkeit vor. Für die Analyse werden soziologische geschlechts- und klassentheoretische Ansätze mit einer Methode zur Figurenanalyse verbunden. Michael Meusers Ansatz, welcher Raewyn Connells Konzept der hegemonialen Männlichkeit mit Pierre Bourdieus Habitus-Konzept verbindet, wird in die Figurenanalyse Jens Eders integriert. Dadurch wird die Performanz von Männlichkeit in Jelineks Prosa sichtbar(er) gemacht und in den Kontext einer doppelten Distinktions- und Dominanzlogik eingeordnet. Im Zuge der Analyse wird deutlich, dass die männlichen Figuren, welche sich bei der Konstruktion ihrer Männlichkeit am Ideal der hegemonialen Männlichkeit orientieren, zum Scheitern verurteilt sind. Sie können den Anforderungen, die das Patriarchat mit der Verkörperung einer hegemonialen Männlichkeit an sie stellt, nicht gerecht werden. Jelinek kastriert sie symbolisch. The Austrian writer Elfriede Jelinek (*1946) is regarded as an author who criticizes patriarchal forms of hegemony with the exaggerated depiction of masculine dominance. The contribution at hand ana- lyzes two of Jelinek’s novels from the 1980s from a gender-theory perspective: Wonderful, Wonder- ful Times [Die Ausgesperrten] and The Piano Teacher [Die Klavierspielerin].     Die wahrnehmungstheoretischen Grundlagen der Bildmotive bei Tarkowskij, die die vorliegende Arbeit nur andeutungsweise behandelt, wurden bereits in einer meiner vorigen Veröffentlichungen bei FreiDok, nämlich "Der Prozeß der geometrisch-optischen Perspektivierung in der visuellen Raumwahrnehmung", URL: www.freidok.uni-freiburg.de/volltexte/271/, eingehend erörtert. ; Die Filmkunst Andrej Tarkowskijs wird am ehesten durch sein Bildmotiv gekennzeichnet. Nach Tarkowskij manifestiert sich im filmischen Bild die "Beobachtung von Lebensfakten, die in der Zeit angesiedelt sind, die entsprechend den Formen des Lebens selbst und dessen Zeitgesetzen organisiert werden." Die Filmkunst ist demnach eine Bildhauerei aus Zeit. In der vorliegenden Abhandlung werden die wahrnehmungstheoretischen und historischen Grundlagen der verschiedenen Bildmotive bei Tarkowskij, dargestellt in den Filmen Ivans Kindheit, Andrej Rubljow, Solaris, Spiegel, Stalker, Nostalgia und Opfer, untersucht. Dabei handelt es sich um einen Versuch, zu veranschaulichen, wie das filmische Bild - als Gegenwarts- und Geschichtsbilder sowie als Erinnerungs- und Traumbilder - sich zu eigener zeitlicher und räumlicher Existenz entfaltet, und folglich der Wirklichkeit und seiner erzählerischen Kontinuität gegenüber Grenzen zieht. Die Untersuchung zielt auch darauf ab, die filmtechnische Eigenart der Bildmotive bei Tarkowskij, wie Zeitlupe, Überwindung der Trägheit sowie das Schweben bzw. die Überwindung der Gravitation, zu erörtern, und ihre epistemologischen und ästhetischen Implikationen zu deuten. ; Andrey Tarkovsky’s aesthetics is characterised predominantly through his image motifs. For Tarkovsky the film image is “basically observation of life’s facts within time, organised according to the pattern of life itself, and observing its time laws.” The art of film is therefore a “sculpting in time.” This treatise examines the epistemological and historical foundations of various image motifs in Tarkovsky’s films: Ivan’s Childhood, Andrei Rublev, Solaris, ...

    The paper’s focus is the archival recovery of one of modernist studies’ (unknown) beginnings, reforging the multifacetedness of the history of modernism and of the early history of the study of modernism. The paper introduces the earliest comprehensive and movement-defining study of modernism. This study is unknown to scholars of modernisms and is thus apt to contribute a new perspective on the beginnings of the concept of modernism’s formation. The study in question is an unpublished PhD thesis written (in English) at the University of Washington and submitted in 1924 – thus preceding Laura Riding and Robert Graves’s A Survey of Modernist Poetry and Edmund Wilson’s Axel’s Castle, which are considered to be the first movement-defining studies of modernism. The paper outlines this unpublished und unknown study and puts it into context by considering it in the light of the earlier critical discussions of modernist painting among other things. Furthermore it investigates the technological aspect of the study’s precarious status of being archived but being unpublished and unknown at the same time. By inquiring more generally into how the status of such texts is influenced by the technological developments of the internet age, the paper reflects on the technological conditions of academic discourse today. Arnesen’s study is the paradigmatic instance of what the paper refers to as the issue of the deep archive.

    Als 1983 der Roman "Die Klavierspielerin" erschien, war Elfriede Jelinek längst keine unbekannte Größe mehr. Der Roman beginnt damit, dass die Klavierspielerin Erika Kohut "wie ein Wirbelsturm in die Wohnung" "stürzt", "die sie mit ihrer Mutter teilt". Es gibt Sätze, deren Gehalt sich geradezu in einer Disproportion zu ihrer Länge befindet, so auch dieser Satz -naturgemäß, weil er der erste des Buchs ist und dadurch das Privileg hat, das Meiste zu sagen und in die riesige Einheit eines Romantextes einzustimmen, und wir die Stimme des Romans an der Stimme dieses ersten Satzes messen. Jedes Satzglied ist mit so viel Information geladen, dass die Aussagekraft des Satzganzen seinen syntaktisch-strukturellen Rahmen sprengt und Sinnsignale in seine nächste Umgebung bzw. über diese hinaus sendet. "Sie ist Nichts. Und nichts gibt es mehr für sie", heißt es im Roman "Die Klavierspielerin" von der Protagonistin Erika Kohut. Je ferner man im Abseits ist, desto näher befindet man sich an dem Abgrund, der "Nichts" heißt. "Die Klavierspielerin" ist ein Roman über das Außenseitertum darüber, wie man ins Abseits kommt. Das Abseits liegt zwischen dem Weg und dem Nichts: hier das Leben, dort der Abgrund.

    Das Internet eignet sich wie kein zweites Medium als Archiv von Wissensbeständen und kulturellen Zeugnissen. Fotis Jannidis, Gerhard Lauer und Andrea Rapp skizzieren mit dem Beitrag zum »Forschungsprogramm einer computergestützen Buch- und Narratologiegeschichte des Romans in Deutschland (1650–1900)« ("Charikleia") die sich für die neuere Literaturgeschichte abzeichnenden Perspektiven. "Charikleia" ist selbst Teil eines größeren Langfristvorhabens mehrerer deutscher Universitäten und außeruniversitärer Forschungseinrichtungen, dem Projekt "DeutschDiachronDigital" (DDD). Ziel des DDD-Vorhabens ist die Erstellung eines für die deutsche Sprach- und Literaturwissenschaft zentralen Korpus von den althochdeutschen und altsächsischen Anfängen bis zum älteren Neuhochdeutsch um 1900. Dieses Korpus wird wissenschaftlichen Ansprüchen auf Textgenauigkeit bzw. Diplomatizität und Historizität entsprechen müssen, außerdem allen Anforderungen an statistische Validität und große Erschließungstiefe der Textauszeichnungen. Gewährleistet sein muss dabei die Kompatibilität mit den international gängigen Standards (vor allem XML, TEI), wie sie andere Projekte bereits etabliert haben. DDD wird als digitales Korpus ein Forschungsinstrument von einer Art sein müssen, wie es keines der Massendigitalisierungen der großen Information Retrieval-Firmen sein kann. Seine Logik der Annotierung und seine Erschließungstiefe werden allein wissenschaftlichen Vorgaben folgen und im geglückten Fall selbst wiederum Modellcharakter für weitere wissenschaftliche Korpora haben. Für "Charikleia" gelten die gleichen Anforderungen, andere kommen hinzu. Denn die Literaturwissenschaft hat noch nicht wie etwa die Korpuslinguistik etablierte Auszeichnungen entwickelt. Wie man narratologisch, buch- und kulturgeschichtlich Texte auszeichnet, wie ein historisch differenziertes Tagset zur Annotierung erzählerischer Texte aussieht, ist eine Forschungslücke der Literaturwissenschaft.     In 1983, Brian Henderson published an article that examined various types of narrative structure in film, including flashbacks and flashforwards. After analyzing a whole spectrum of techniques capable of effecting a transition between past and present – blurs, fades, dissolves, and so on – he concluded: "Our discussions indicate that cinema has not (yet) developed the complexity of tense structures found in literary works". His "yet" (in parentheses) was an instance of laudable caution, as very soon – in some ten–fifteen years – the situation would change drastically, and temporal twists would become a trademark of a new genre that has not (yet) acquired a standardized name: "modular narratives", "puzzle films", and "complex films" are among the labels used.
