The Narrative of the Most Remarkable Particulars in the Life of James Albert Ukawsaw Gronniosaw appropriates Evangelical discourse in order to establish Gronniosaw’s moral authority, which is derived from Gronniosaw’s submission to God, has to be authenticated by clerical authorities and allows him to criticize his corrupt masters. Gronniosaw exposes discrepancies between his masters’ religious and economic discourses and practices less by direct argument than by the negating force of conspicuous silence, by repetitions of scenes of abuse and abject poverty and by the ironic emplotment of his life. Being a good Christian alienates him from Western society and endangers his very survival in a commercial culture, which undermines the language of the spirit and compares unfavourably to the African subsistence economy.

This paper studies one of the earliest forms of modern consumer culture—the road book—in relation to one of the early utopias of modern consumption—California. Criticism has traditionally treated the road book as an extension of a loosely defined transcendentalist project, where drivers take to the open road to “discover” themselves in nature. The determinate context, however, is corporate rather than literary-historical. The earliest road books were advertisements. Their itineraries linked up with other spatial technologies (e.g. the conveyor belts in automobile plants and modern highways), transforming space into a vast production and distribution network. Production and distribution intersected in California, the state with the most automobiles per capita and the destination of most early road trips. The first section of the paper considers the journey to California from the perspective of Emily Post, who would later become a famous writer on etiquette. Post’s book is the narrative equivalent to the standardized roadside architecture, converting local difference into a tourist attraction, and local (especially ethnic) identity into a commodity. The next section considers the effects of commercial homogenization on gender, focusing on the moment when some women, taking the steering wheel, assumed agency as consumers. The primary texts here are some of the early novels of Sinclair Lewis, along with examples of sociology and advertising copy from the 1920s and 1930s. The final section analyzes the WPA Guidebook to California as a federal attempt to re-map corporate space—the space of tourist attractions and consumers—according to a progressive ideal. All three sections treat the tour form as a spatial and literary structure—a privileged topos, at once geographical and symbolic, where complex relations between identity and place are negotiated in the form of a journey. ; Goethe Universität Frankfurt am Main ; publikationen.ub.uni-frankfurt.de/frontdoor/index/index/docId/36934

This article argues that decades before Sir Walter Scott published his first historical novel, a number of innovative British novels questioned the possibility of rendering historical topics in narrative form. Although Henry Fielding had claimed that the novel should closely resemble historiography, three eighteenth-century British novelists recognized the problems besetting the attempt to provide true stories of the past in different ways. Sarah Fielding tried to get rid of the elevated position of the ‘omniscient’ narrator, rejecting even chronological order in her fictionalised account of the lives of Cleopatra and Octavia. Laurence Sterne parodied not only historiographical ways of arriving at true knowledge of past events in his seminal novel Tristram Shandy, he also demonstrated that the story is the result of the narrator’s use of narrative conventions and of language, and that the gap between the past and the representation of the past cannot be bridged. Maria Edgeworth tried to get rid of the historiographical dilemma by choosing an unreliable narrator as a biographer in her work Castle Rackrent, which is one of those eighteenth-century novels that casts doubt on whether it is possible to tell a true story of the past with those narrative means which Scott would later use to great acclaim.

CONTEXT: Recent clinical trials have demonstrated a decrease in multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS) and mortality in patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) treated with a protective ventilatory strategy. OBJECTIVE: To examine the hypothesis that an injurious ventilatory strategy may lead to end-organ epithelial cell apoptosis and organ dysfunction. DESIGN AND SETTING: In vivo animals: 24 rabbits with acid-aspiration lung injury were ventilated with injurious or noninjurious ventilatory strategies. In vitro: rabbit epithelial cells were exposed to plasma from in vivo rabbit studies. In vivo human: plasma samples from patients included in a previous randomized controlled trial examining a lung protective strategy were analyzed (lung protection group, n = 9 and controls, n = 11). MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: In vivo animals: biochemical markers of liver and renal dysfunction; apoptosis in end organs. In vitro: induction of apoptosis in LLC-RK1 renal tubular epithelial cells. In vivo human: correlation of plasma creatinine and soluble Fas ligand. RESULTS: The injurious ventilatory strategy led to increased rates of epithelial cell apoptosis in the kidney (mean [SE]: injurious, 10.9% [0.88%]; noninjurious, 1.86% [0.17%]; P<.001) and small intestine villi (injurious, 6.7% [0.66%]; noninjurious, 0.97% [0.14%]; P<.001), and led to the elevation of biochemical markers indicating renal dysfunction in vivo. Induction of apoptosis was increased in LLC-RK1 cells incubated with plasma from rabbits ventilated with injurious ventilatory strategy at 4 hours (P =.03) and 8 hours (P =.002). The Fas:Ig, a fusion protein that blocks soluble Fas ligand, attenuated induction of apoptosis in vitro. There was a significant correlation between changes in soluble Fas ligand and changes in creatinine in patients with ARDS (R = 0.64, P =.002). CONCLUSIONS: Mechanical ventilation can lead to epithelial cell apoptosis in the kidney and small intestine, accompanied by biochemical evidence of organ dysfunction. This may ...

INTRODUCTION: Catheter ablation has become a routine treatment for patients with Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome because of its low risk and high efficacy; however, radiofrequency ablation in the septum close to the AV node or His bundle still carries a definite risk for AV block. Cryoenergy catheter ablation has recently become available. This technique has specific features, such as the ability to create reversible loss of function to predict the effects of ablation (ice mapping) and the adherence of the catheter tip to the endocardium with freezing, which avoids the risk for dislodgment. Both of these characteristics may minimize the risk of complications. The aim of this study was to analyze the effectiveness and safety of catheter cryoablation in 20 patients with para-Hisian or midseptal accessory pathways (AP). METHODS AND RESULTS: Eleven patients with para-Hisian and 9 patients with midseptal AP underwent catheter cryoablation. Ice mapping at -30 degrees C was performed to ascertain the disappearance of AP conduction and the absence of impairment of AV nodal conduction. If the expected result was obtained, cryoablation was performed by lowering the temperature to -75 degrees C for 4 minutes in order to create a permanent lesion. Cryoablation was successful in all patients using a mean of 1.2 +/- 0.4 applications. Recurrences occurred in 4 patients (20%) who underwent a second successful cryoablation session. No complications were observed. CONCLUSION: Cryoablation appears to be a safe and effective technique for ablation of APs close to the AV node or His bundle because of the ability to predict the acute effects of ablation with ice mapping before creation of an irreversible lesion.

; On the assumption that humour plays a decisive role in the speech acts of Britons, it is the objective of the study to identify its essential characteristics and to explain the genesis of verbal humour in English in order to gain the necessary knowledge which may enable Germans to master problems caused by humour in intercultural communication. With incongruity being the crucial structural principle of verbal humour, the linguistic analysis of excerpts from six works of English literature is founded on a concept which takes the opposition of semantic scripts as a basis. The results show that there is no fundamental difference between the English and the German languages concerning the possibilities of creating verbal humour. The attitudes of the speakers of both languages, however, differ significantly. Whereas the sense of humour is considered an integral constituent of a Briton's identity and the positive features of verbal humour (compensation, detachment etc.) are deliberately used in communication by Britons, Germans do rather not profit frequently by its advantages. Among other things the Britons' leaning towards humour finds expression in distinct individualism, the striving for harmony, the preference for an indirect conversational style, the readiness to compromise as well as an inclination towards the paradoxical, which allows for flexibility in the assessment of values and standards by contrasting terms and ideas. To improve intercultural communication with Britons Germans ought to be ready to concede more space to verbal humour. With regard to the instruction of English as a foreign language the recommendation to add humour competence to the objectives of communicative competence is made.
