    This essay correlates a postcolonial and a postmodern novel, Ben Okri’s The Famished Road and Ishmael Reed’s Mumbo Jumbo, on the basis of their concern with issues of spirituality and (African) magic. Both novels aim at reconciling ‘ancient’ African knowledge and ‘modem’ Western achievements rather than casting these conditions as mutually exclusive or radically oppositional. This reconciliation of modernity and magic, tradition and technology, reflects a more pervasive shift in popular culture to spiritual issues since the 1960s which affected postmodern and postcolonial writing like­ wise. In view of pervasive experiences of alienation and fragmentation, these new spiritualities gain special significance as they promise new ways of meaning production and orientation.

    Given Tournier's own indication that the story of Taor in the last part of "Gaspard, Mechior & Balthazar" came to him from Edzard Schaper's "Die Legende vom vierten König" and Henry van Dyke's "The story of the other wise man", this article compares the three texts in order to determine their respective theological perspectives. It is argued that Schaper's and van Dyke's respective tales constitute meditations on the sheep and the goats pericope from Matthew 24. Tournier's tale, on the other hand, involves a different theological focus: the first temptation of Christ from Matthew 4:14 as this pericope relates to Deuteronomy 8:2-3. This shift in focus makes food central to the spiritual journey of Tournier's protagonist: the gluttonous Taor makes a symbolic transition from "living on bread alone" to living by "every word that comes out of the mouth of God" (the bread of the Eucharist). It is argued that because Taor begins his journey from the spiritually immature (from a Christian perspective) position of the Israelites in Exodus 16, his starting point is pre-Christological and, therefore, his journey is far greater than those of Schaper's and van Dyke's respective protagonists. The latter possess rudimentary Christological knowledge right from the start and therefore undergo less extensive spiritual metamorphosis than does Taor.

    This thesis comes under the terms of Clause 3.2 in the booklet Research Degrees, Regulations and Notes for Guidance for the University of North London where it is stated that 'A candidate may undertake a programme of research in which the candidate's own creative work forms, as a point of origin or reference, a significant part of the intellectual enquiry.' This work, 'shall have been undertaken as part of the registered research programme.' Furthermore, it is stated that the 'creative work shall be. set in its relevant theoretical, historical, critical or design context.' (University of North London 1996: 6) The creative work consists of 65 poems intended for an audience of children and the critical work of the thesis is a process of research into the sources and origins of those poems. It is therefore an enquiry that seeks to uncover how a highly specific mode of literature comes to be written. It is my contention that descriptions of such a process are unsatisfactory unless they incorporate and combine the following four elements: i) an examination of how the particular self under consideration (me) was formed in a specific socioeconomic, and cultural moment; ii) an examination of how, within that moment, that self engaged with the texts made available in the institutions it occupied; iii) an explanation of how the writing involved a synthesis of experiences - of life, texts and audiences; iv) an explanation of how a writer reads his or her own writing. The first two of these elements comprise the 'historical. .context' noted above and the second two offer aspects of a 'theoretical. .context'.
