    During the Great Depression, people from across the political spectrum sought to ground American identity in the rural know-how of “the folk.” At the same time, certain writers, filmmakers, and intellectuals combined documentary and satire into a hybrid genre that revealed the folk as an anxious product of corporate capitalism, rather than an antidote to commercial culture. In Real Folks, Sonnet Retman analyzes the invention of the folk as figures of authenticity in the political culture of the 1930s, as well as the critiques that emerged in response. Diverse artists and intellectuals—including the novelists George Schuyler and Nathanael West, the filmmaker Preston Sturges, and the anthropologist Zora Neale Hurston—illuminated the fabrication and exploitation of folk authenticity in New Deal and commercial narratives. They skewered the racist populisms that prevented interracial working-class solidarity, prophesized the patriotic function of the folk for the nation-state in crisis, and made their readers and viewers feel self-conscious about the desire for authenticity. By illuminating the subversive satirical energy of the 1930s, Retman identifies a rich cultural tradition overshadowed until now by the scholarly focus on Depression-era social realism.

    Of the 218 letters, 126 belong to correspondence with the Imperial Count Ernst Christoph von Manteuffel, a dedicated patron of the supporters of Christian Wolff and the head of the Berlin chapter of the Society of Alethophiles. In Berlin and Leipzig great hopes were placed in the Prussian heir apparent Friedrich II, whom many saw a kind of Platonian "philosopher king" who would help elevate reason and Wolffian philosophy to new heights. The letters document the development of a rationalistic strain in Gottsched's sermons. They also provide insight into the satires of Wolff's opponents written by L.A.V. Gottsched. Gottsched's speeches concerning Martin Opitz and the "book printing anniversary" (Buchdruckjubiläum) found strong resonance in the correspondence and inspired letters concerning similar undertakings. Jakob Brucker's letters illuminate the planning and creation of the "Bilder-sal", a contemporary history of notable scholars that featured biographies and portraits, and which came to include Gottsched and his wife.

The digital revolution has made it possible not only to imagine but to actually realize a world in which social inequality and poverty are vanquished. But instead these developments have led to an unprecedented level of accumulation of private profits. Rather than the end of social inequality we are witness to its global expansion. Yet his geographic and ethnographic digressions were long underestimated as examples offeigned eruditionand as undue interruptions to the historical narrative. The author of this volume believes that the key to understanding Ammianus`s work as a whole lies in his teaching of classical rhetoric, his metaphoric reading of landscapes, and the creation of spaces for memory and counterworlds to the Imperium Romanum. In this way, historical understanding and digressions concerning geographic knowledge must be viewed as interdependent features of the text. The author thus casts a new light on Ammianus`s literary achievements.

In the United States, USDA films were shown in movie theaters, public and private schools at all educational levels, churches, libraries and even in open fields. For many Americans in the early 1900s, the USDA films were the first motion pictures they watched. And yet USDA documentaries have received little serious scholarly attention. The lack of serious study is especially concerning since the films chronicle over half a century of American farm life and agricultural work and, in so doing, also chronicle the social, cultural, and political changes in the United States at a crucial time in its development into a global superpower. Focusing specifically on four key films, Winn explicates the representation of African Americans in these films within the socio-political context of their times.

Sein Werk findet in der deutschsprachigen Slawistik in allgemeinen Arbeiten zur zeitgenössischen russischen Literatur zwar immer wieder Erwähnung, die Rezeption beschränkt sich jedoch auf wenige frühe Gedichte und Poeme und läßt vorallem den in der vorliegenden Arbeit diskutieren wesentlichen Aspekt im Werk Voznesenskijs außer Betracht, nämlich die vielseitigen Wechselwirkungen zwischen seiner Dichtung und bildenden Künsten. Die exemplarisch zur Diskussion herangezogenen Werke Voznesenkijs werden einerseits in ihren innerliterarischen Kontext untersucht, anderseits werden ihre verschiedenartigen Beziehungen zu den bildenden Künsten, der Architektur, der Malerei und Graphik und der Plastik beleuchtet.

    Die vorliegende Arbeit beschäftigt sich mit dem Märchenband "Dokuka i Balagur'e" von A.M. Remizov. Die darin enthaltenen Märchen gehen größtenteils auf Vorlagen zurück, die in der Märchensammlung von N.E. Ončukov enthalten sind. Lediglich sieben Märchen entstammen anderen Quellen. So sind "Mertvec", "Skomoroch", "Pes-Bogatyr'" und "Medvedčik" verschiedenen Ausgaben der Zeitschrift "Živaja starina" entnommen, während den Märchen "Krasnaja sosenka", "Vory" und "Barma" private Aufzeichnungen des Autors zugrunde liegen, so daß letztere daher leider für diese Arbeit nicht zugänglich waren. Ziel dieser Arbeit soll sein, alle Veränderungen, die die Originaltexte durch die Bearbeitung durch R. erfahren haben, zu erfassen, zu beschreiben, zu klassifizieren und letztlich zu bewerten.
