    Main description: Bohuslav von Lobkowicz auf Hassenstein (1462 - 1510), böhmischer Gelehrter und Dichter adeliger Herkunft, hinterließ zahlreiche in brillantem Latein geschriebene Werke. Als dritter und letzter Teil erscheint in der Bibliotheca Teubneriana nach seinen prosaischen Schriften (ed. Ryba/BT 1937) und Briefen (edd. Martínek/Martínková/ 1969 und 1980) seine Gedichtsammlung, die immer für den besten Teil des Hassensteinschen literarischen Nachlasses gehalten wurde. Außer den die damalige politische und gesellschaftliche Lage kommentierenden Satiren findet man in der Sammlung auch traditionelle Beispiele der Gelegenheitslyrik wie z.B. zahlreiche Epicedien. Bemerkenswert sind seine kurzen Liebesgedichte sowie auch Bearbeitungen von religiösen Themen. Zu den Adressaten von Hassensteins Gedichten zählten viele führende Persönlichkeiten und Gelehrte aus dem mitteleuropäischen Raum. Main description: Bohuslav of Lobkowicz and Hassenstein (1462 - 1510), Bohemian scholar and poet of noble birth, has left many works written in brilliant Latin. His collected poetical work appearing after his prose and epistles as the third and last part of the editorial row at the Bibliotheca Teubneriana was always considered as the best part of Hassenstein's literary heritage. Beside the satires commenting contemporary politic and social situation various examples of the traditional occasional poetry can be found in the collection. Also his short love poems as well as variations in the religious themes are without doubt of interest. Numerous personalities from the world of nobility and scholarship from Central Europe were counted to the addressees of Hassenstein's poems.

    The publication of this volume completes the new edition of the sources and major analogues of all the Canterbury Tales prepared by members of the New Chaucer Society. This collection, the first to appear in over half a century, features such additions as a fresh interpretation of Chaucer's sources for the frame of the work, chapters on the sources of the General Prologue and Retractions, and modern English translations of all foreign language texts, with glosses for the Middle English. Chapters on the individual tales contain an updated survey of the present state of scholarship on their source materials. Several sources and analogues discovered during the past fifty years are found here together for the first time, and some other familiar sources are re-edited from manuscripts closer to Chaucer's copies. Besides the General Prologue and the Retractions, this volume includes chapters on the Miller, Summoner, Merchant, Physician, Shipman, Prioress, Sir Thopas, Canon's Yeoman, Manciple, the Knight and the prologues and tales of the Man of Law and Wife of Bath. This book analyses the mythical and legendary narratives in Ovid's Fasti as narrative and concentrates on the neglected literary aspects of these stories. It combines traditional tools of literary criticism with more modern techniques (taken especially from narratology and intertextuality). From a narratological viewpoint it covers important features such as aperture, closure, characterization, internal narrators, description, space, time and cinematic technique. On the intertextual level it examines the narratives' complex relationship with Virgil, Livy and Ovid's own earlier works. Recent criticism on the Fasti has addressed various elements (religious, historical, political, astronomical et cetera), but detailed narrative study has been wanting. This book fills that gap, to provide a more informed and balanced appreciation of this multifaceted poem aimed at classicists and literary critics in general (for whom all the Latin is translated)

In der Praefatio wird die neuzeitliche Geschichte des Textes dargestellt. This edition of the Ephesiaca ist based on: 1) a new and accurate reading of the difficult codex unicus; 2) a practically full knowledge of emendations proposed by other scholars from 1700 to the present; and 3) conjectures offered by the present editor. In the preface some aspects of the early modern history of the text are clarified.

Letzterer wird vor den Augen seines Vaters von den Beduinen entführt. Diese wollen den schönen Jüngling dem Morgenstern opfern. Nach manch bestandenem Abenteuer findet der greise Vater ihn wieder - er ist wohlauf -, und die beiden empfangen vom Bischof von Eluse die Priesterweihe. Durch das vorliegende Buch wird ein literarisch reizvoller, jedoch noch wenig bekannter Text einem breiteren Fachpublikum zugänglich gemacht. The work traditionally attributed to the church father Nilus of Ancyra tells of a raid on the monastic settlement on Mount Sinai and the adventures of two monks living there, an old man and his son. The latter is abducted by Bedouins right in front of his father. They want to sacrifice the handsome youth to the morning star. After many hardships, the old father finds him alive and well, and both are ordained priests by the bishop of Eluse. With this book, a still little-known text of some literary interest is made accessible to a wider public. This new edition by Lucarini, which replaces Brandes' edition (CSEL 1888), is based on a full revision of the tradition (especially, a new analysis of Bernensis 317). The editor proposes, too, new and numerouses conjectures. Paulinus von Pella in Mazedonien, lateinischer christlicher Dichter, liefert uns in seinem nicht sehr umfangreichen Werk ein doch sehr interessantes Zeitdokument für die Gesellschaft des 4./5. Jh. n. Chr. Die Neuausgabe von Carlo Lucarini ersetzt die letzte Bearbeitung von W. Brandes (CSEL 1888) und basiert auf einer völlig neuen Durchsicht des erhaltenen Handschriftenmaterials (speziell einer neuen Analyse des Bernensis 317).     Bohuslav of Lobkowicz and Hassenstein (1462 - 1510), Bohemian scholar and poet of noble birth, has left many works written in brilliant Latin. His collected poetical work appearing after his prose and epistles as the third and last part of the editorial row at the Bibliotheca Teubneriana was always considered as the best part of Hassenstein's literary heritage. Beside the satires commenting contemporary politic and social situation various examples of the traditional occasional poetry can be found in the collection. Also his short love poems as well as variations in the religious themes are without doubt of interest. Numerous personalities from the world of nobility and scholarship from Central Europe were counted to the addressees of Hassenstein's poems. Bohuslav von Lobkowicz auf Hassenstein (1462 - 1510), böhmischer Gelehrter und Dichter adeliger Herkunft, hinterließ zahlreiche in brillantem Latein geschriebene Werke. Als dritter und letzter Teil erscheint in der Bibliotheca Teubneriana nach seinen prosaischen Schriften (ed. Ryba/BT 1937) und Briefen (edd. Martínek/Martínková/ 1969 und 1980) seine Gedichtsammlung, die immer für den besten Teil des Hassensteinschen literarischen Nachlasses gehalten wurde. Außer den die damalige politische und gesellschaftliche Lage kommentierenden Satiren findet man in der Sammlung auch traditionelle Beispiele der Gelegenheitslyrik wie z.B. zahlreiche Epicedien. Bemerkenswert sind seine kurzen Liebesgedichte sowie auch Bearbeitungen von religiösen Themen. Zu den Adressaten von Hassensteins Gedichten zählten viele führende Persönlichkeiten und Gelehrte aus dem mitteleuropäischen Raum.

    Gegenstand dieses Buches ist ein Text, welcher bisher der Forschung, was sein zeitliches und räumliches Umfeld betrifft, Rätsel aufgegeben hat, gleichwohl für das Verständnis der spätantiken Linguistik und ihr Fortwirken im Mittelalter wichtig ist. Es handelt sich um einen in der Tradition des Servius stehenden Kommentar zur Ars maior Donats, der bis heute unter dem Namen des christlichen Staatsmanns und Schriftstellers Cassiodor verbreitet ist. Die Verfasserschaft ist dennoch ungeklärt, weil die Zuweisung an Cassiodor weniger auf der Überlieferung beruht als vielmehr auf der gewagten Theorie eines französischen Philologen, der den Text im 17. Jahrhundert erstmals ediert hat. Inhaltlich beschäftigt sich der Traktat mit den octo partes orationis, d. h. den acht Wortarten Nomen, Pronomen, Verb, Adverb, Partizip, Konjunktion, Präposition und Interjektion. Für den heutigen Benutzer war der Text bisher nur schwer zugänglich, weil der ersten und einzigen Edition von 1679 und ihrem Nachdruck von 1848 nur ein Teil des Überlieferten zugrunde liegt. Am Anfang der vorliegenden Arbeit steht daher die Neuedition des Textes, bei welcher gegenüber der älteren Fassung eine noch existierende frühkarolingische Handschrift sowie eine breite Nebenüberlieferung berücksichtigt worden sind. Den zweiten Teil bildet ein Kommentar, in dem der Text sprachlich und inhaltlich untersucht wird mit dem Ziel, die Fragen nach Zeit und Raum seiner Entstehung, seinem literaturgeschichtlichen Umfeld, seinem Verfasser sowie seinem Fortwirken zu klären. Der auf diese Weise zeitlich und räumlich schärfer konturierte Text kann die Reihe der wenigen Donatkommentare, die aus der Spätantike überliefert sind, ergänzen und so der modernen Linguistik als Gegenstand zur Erforschung der frühen Stufen der Sprachtheorie dienen. This book deals with a text which has been a mystery to research concerning its temporal and spatial sphere up to now. Nevertheless it is of great importance to understand late ancient linguistics and their continuing influence on the Middle Ages. This comment to Ars maior by Donat being in the tradition of Servius has been known to be written by the Christian statesman and author Cassiodor. Nonetheless the authorship is still not solved because assigning the text to Cassiodor is less based on transmission, but rather on the rash theory of a French philologist who edited the text for the first time in the 17th century. With regard to content the tract is about the octo partes orationis, namely the eight parts of speech noun, pronoun, adverb, participle, conjunction, preposition and interjection. For today's user this text has been difficult to get hold of because just a part of the existing transmission was the basis for the first and only edition of 1679 and its reprint of 1848. Therefore a revised edition is placed at the beginning of this thesis which considers apart from the old version a still existing manuscript from early Carolingian times as well as a broad secondary transmission. The second part consists of a comment regarding an analysis of language and content. Its aim is to answer the questions concerning time and place of origin, its position in literary history, its author and its continuing influence. Consequently this specific version enriches the series of comments written by Donat transmitted from late ancient times. The remaining two are drawn from the appendix to the book: Nemean 10, for the Argive wrestler Theaeus and his family, including the famous myth of the Dioscuri, and Nemean 11, for the installation of a prytanis on the island of Tenedos. The commentaries elucidate problems of metre, text, and interpretation, and provide up-to-date treatment of the language and subject-matter of the poems.

    This work provides a full commentary on the first book of Valerius Flaccus' Argonautica , an epic which has received increased attention in the last few decades, as may be seen from two recent editions (1997 and 2003). Its first aim is to clarify the text, which is sometimes rather difficult and, in places, still not established with certainty. Apart from this philological aspect, the literary merits of the poem have also been taken into account.

    The publication of this volume completes the new edition of the sources and major analogues of all the Canterbury Tales prepared by members of the New Chaucer Society. This collection, the first to appear in over half a century, features such additions as a fresh interpretation of Chaucer's sources for the frame of the work, chapters on the sources of the General Prologue and Retractions, and modern English translations of all foreign language texts, with glosses for the Middle English. Chapters on the individual tales contain an updated survey of the present state of scholarship on their source materials. Several sources and analogues discovered during the past fifty years are found here together for the first time, and some other familiar sources are re-edited from manuscripts closer to Chaucer's copies. Besides the General Prologue and the Retractions, this volume includes chapters on the Miller, Summoner, Merchant, Physician, Shipman, Prioress, Sir Thopas, Canon's Yeoman, Manciple, the Knight and the prologues and tales of the Man of Law and Wife of Bath.
