    During the course of a study of the manuscript tradition of the Betä Ǝsraʾel (Ethiopian Jews), the manuscript Jerusalem, National Library, Ms. Or. 87 came to light. This codex is a unique manuscript with several important elements that contribute to our knowledge of the history of the Betä Ǝsraʾel. Its by far most important feature are two short additional notes that I have come to call the Hoḫwärwa genealogy. This genealogy is the second piece of original pre-twentieth century Betä Ǝsraʾel historiography ever discovered, next to the text published by Leslau in 1946-47 as ‘A Falasha Religious Dispute.’ Taking the manuscript as a starting point, this article aims to cover topics such as the Betä Ǝsraʾel scribal tradition and aspects of their literature, their monasticism, the history of Hoḫwärwa monastery, and the history of the manuscript itself.

    Der historische Roman Il resto di niente (1986) von Enzo Striano greift mit der Dichterin und Zeitungsherausgeberin Eleonora de Fonseca Pimentel die im kollektiven Gedächtnis der Gegenwart prominenteste Persönlichkeit der Neapolitanischen Republik von 1799 auf, die nach der Rückeroberung der Stadt durch monarchistische Truppen hingerichtet wurde. Das im 19. Jahrhundert tradierte heroische Bild Fonseca Pimentels als republikanische Märtyrerin für den italienischen Einheitsgedanken wird jedoch in Strianos Roman revidiert, indem er seine Protagonistin als eine intellektuelle Außenseiterin porträtiert, die sich schließlich der Vergeblichkeit ihrer politischen und gesellschaftlichen Bestrebungen bewusst wird. Der vorliegende Beitrag zielt auf eine Untersuchung der literarischen Repräsentation Fonseca Pimentels und ihrer Bedeutung als Bezugspunkt für Neapels Intellektuelle. ; Enzo Striano’s historical novel Il resto di niente (1986) deals with the life of 18th century poet and newspaper editor Eleonora de Fonseca Pimentel who is commemorated as the most prominent representative of the Neapolitan Republic of 1799. Executed by royalist repression after the Republic’s decline, she became a hero and patriotic martyr for Italy’s movement of national unification. Striano’s novel revises Fonseca Pimentel’s 19th century heroic image by portraying his protagonist as an intellectual outsider who eventually becomes aware of the futility of her political and social aspirations. This article examines the literary representations of Fonseca Pimentel as well as her importance as a point of reference for Naples’ intellectuals.

    Der Artikel zeichnet die jüngsten Debatten über den Stellenwert des Jüdischen innerhalb der jüdischen Gemeinschaft in Polen und Deutschland in drei verschiedenen Diskursbereichen nach: Aufbauend auf einer Skizzierung der Entwicklungsbedingungen jüdischer Kultur nach 1989 soll anhand von Interviews mit Jüdinnen und Juden der sogenannten dritten Generation der Prozess des sich wandelnden jüdischen Selbstverständnisses in beiden Ländern aufgezeigt werden. Diese Haltung wird ergänzt um einen Einblick in die jüdische Publizistik, die in zunehmendem Maße eine breite, nicht mehr auf die Shoah allein fokussierte Perspektive einnimmt. Daran anknüpfend möchte ich literarische Beispiele untersuchen, in denen das Jüdische nicht mehr als Deprivationsmerkmal verstanden wird. Die Autorinnen und Autoren suchen (mit teils fiktionalen Strategien) Wege zu einer Neupositionierung des Jüdischen in der jeweiligen Gesellschaft, womit sie gleichzeitig die vermeintliche Außenseiterposition infrage stellen. ; The article depicts recent debates about the conception of Jewishness in Poland and Germany in three different areas of discourse: Based on a sketch of the situation of Jewish life after 1989, the evaluation of interviews with Jews of the so called third generation testifies the changing Jewish self-perception in both countries. Jewish journals that increasingly offer a broader perspective on contemporary Jewish life and do no longer focus on the Shoah as main identification feature complete this point of view. Based on this, I analyse literary examples in which Jewishness is no longer understood as a deprivation feature. The authors look for ways to overcome the alleged outsider-notion and to reposition the Jewish community in the society (with partly fictional strategies).

    Julián Herbert’s Canción de tumba (2011), a collection of more or less linear narratives about the death of the author/narrator’s mother, presents many of the characteristics of what Josefina Ludmer would call "postautonomous literatures": postautonomy, according to Ludmer, implies the end of the literary institution as we know it and demands the arrival of a new, external paradigm of reading that allows for a more extensive understanding of such texts. However, it is difficult to ignore that the narrative technique in Canción de tumba, as well as its author/narrator/protagonist's awareness of it, represent one of its fundamental poetological bases. The most evident example of this phenomenon is the handling of intertextual references in the work, especially concerning 19th centruy literary poetics such as Symbolism and Decadentism. The use of quotations, paraphrases (serious or parodic), as well as references to other authors and literatures are frequently shown as invitations to discover the aesthetic and poetological foundations of the novel. By performing an analysis of some of these references, the purpose of this article is to explore to which extent a more complete understanding of what is considered postautonomous writing can be achieved by using methods that Ludmer would consider to be "obsolete" for this type of contemporary literature. ; La novela Canción de tumba (2011), una colección de narrativas más o menos lineares en torno a la muerte de la madre de su autor y narrador Julián Herbert presenta muchas de las características de lo que Josefina Ludmer denominaría “literaturas postautónomas”: la postautonomía, según Ludmer, implica el fin de la institución literaria como se le conoce y exige la llegada de un nuevo paradigma de lectura externo a la misma, que permita una comprensión más extensa de estos textos. Sin embargo, resulta difícil ignorar que la técnica narrativa de Canción de tumba, así como la conciencia de su autor sobre esta misma, representan una de sus bases poetológicas fundamentales. El ejemplo más evidente de este fenómeno es el manejo de referencias intertextuales en la obra, especialmente respecto a las tradiciones literarias del malditismo y el decadentismo. La disposición de citas, paráfrasis (serias o paródicas), así como de menciones a otros autores y literaturas se muestran frecuentemente como invitaciones a descubrir los fundamentos estéticos y poetológicos de la novela. El propósito de este artículo es explorar, realizando un análisis de algunas estas referencias (método característico de la “obsoleta” episteme literaria), hasta qué punto se puede lograr un entendimiento más completo de una escritura que se considera postautónoma.

    Ángela Figuera Aymerich war zeitgenössisch in die literarischen Netzwerke der poesía social integriert. Allerdings ist sie erst seit den 1980er Jahren in den Kanon derselben aufgestiegen, als spanische und englischsprachige Literarturwissenschaftler begannen, sich um mehr Geschlechtergerechtigkeit zu bemühen. Sie haben ausgehend von metalyrischen und poetologischen Reflexionen der Autorin zwei Phasen in ihrer Lyrik herausgearbeitet. Diese Phasen analysiert der Artikel mit Ideen Simone de Beauvoirs und mit Adrienne Richs Unterscheidung von Mutterschaft als Erfahrung und als Institution. Für die erste Phase wird argumentiert, dass Figuera Mutterschaft als Institution zwar noch weitgehend affirmiert, aber bereits weibliche Körperlichkeit in der gleichrangigen Partnerschaft mit dem Mann hervorhebt. Mit der zweiten Phase, die der poesía social zugerechnet wird und sich als poesía impura präsentiert, fokussiert Figuera Mutterschaft dann als Differenzerfahrung und biologisches Potenzial. Gegenüber der nationalkatholischen Doktrin des Franco-Regimes von Frauen als Mütter und Ehefrauen entwirft Figuera eine „maternidad disidente“ (Zabala 2003) der kollektiven Verweigerung. ; Despite her contemporary integration in the literary networks of the poesía social, Ángela Figuera Aymerich only ascended to its canon due to research efforts for more gender fairness since the 1980s. With respect to her poetry, critics distinguish fundamentally between two phases which Figuera reflected metalyrically and poetologically. This article analyses these phases using both ideas of Simone de Beauvoir and Adrienne Rich’s distinction between motherhood as experience and as institution. For the first phase, it will be argued that Figuera affirms motherhood as institution to a large extent, but already stresses the physicalness of women who are seen as equal in the partnership with men. With the second phase which pertains to the poesía social and which is presented as poesía impura, Figuera focusses on motherhood as differentiating experience and biological potential. Instead of portraying women as wifes and as mothers, Figuera sketches a collective refusal of motherhood, thereby shaping a „maternidad disidente“ (Zabala 2003) and challenging francoist National Catholicism.

    In dem vorliegenden Artikel wird der Frage nachgegangen, ob Nathalie Sarrautes erster Roman Portrait d’un Inconnu (1948) als Satire oder als Weiterentwicklung des Kriminalromans im Kontext des Nouveau Roman verstanden werden kann. Diese Fragestellung wird insbesondere aus der Perspektive des Lesers betrachtet. Im ersten Teil erfolgt eine kurze Vorstellung der Rolle des Lesers sowie der Hauptmerkmale des Kriminalromans. Im Mittelpunkt des zweiten Teils steht die Analyse der histoire- und der discours-Ebene, die schließlich zeigen soll, dass Nathalie Sarraute die Tradition des Kriminalromans nutzt, um ihren eigenen Roman zu schaffen. Trotz der Banalität der Handlung und der Unzuverlässigkeit des Erzählers ist Portrait d’un Inconnu nicht als Satire zu betrachten, sondern eher als Lob oder Weiterentwicklung des Kriminalgenres. ; This article examines the relationship between Nathalie Sarraute’s first novel Portrait d’un Inconnu (1948) and crime literature. The aim is to find out whether the author’s work is a satire or a further development of the crime novel. This question will be considered especially from the reader’s perspective. The first part briefly introduces the role of the reader as well as the main characteristics of the detective novel and the Nouveau Roman, creating a context that allows a better understanding of the novel under study. In the second part, the content and structure of the work will be analysed, which will finally show that Nathalie Sarraute uses the tradition of the detective novel to create her own work. Despite the banality of the plot and the unreliability of the narrator Portrait d’un Inconnu should not be considered a satire but rather a praise or development of the detective genre.

    The ennemies of Claudel have always tried to depict him as a poet of the christian Middle Ages. In their opinion, his medieval inspiration, from Tête d’Or to Le Chemin de la Croix n° 2, could not be modern. But if we consider his complete works, it seems that his vision of the Middle Ages is far more wide that we could think. This period is christian, but far more inclusive. Claudel resurrected many medieval forms and genres, but always mixed them with other literary traditions. Therefore, Middle Ages are not turned towards the past, but towards the future. Indeed, Claudel is far more modern that his contemporaries. That is what we intend to demonstrate in a new essay called Paul Claudel and the Middle Ages, to be published by Champion in March 2022. ; Les détracteurs de Claudel n’ont cessé de le présenter comme un poète ancré dans le Moyen Âge chrétien. L’inspiration médiévale de Claudel, sensible de Tête d’Or au Chemin de la Croix n° 2, dénierait ainsi à son art toute modernité. En considérant l’intégralité de son œuvre, il apparaît que le Moyen Âge n’implique en rien une régression. Le Moyen Âge claudélien est beaucoup plus vaste qu’on ne l’imagine : il n’est pas uniquement chrétien mais accueille toutes les traditions du monde. Il ne fait pas seulement revivre les genres et formes de ce passé, mais les hybride. Le Moyen Âge est dès lors moins tourné vers le passé que vers l’avenir et semble, à sa manière, infiniment plus moderne que celui de ses contemporains. C’est ce que nous tentons de démontrer dans un essai à paraître chez Honoré Champion en mars 2022, Paul Claudel et le Moyen Âge.

    Este artículo se basa en la metodología de práctica artística como investigación, que parte de mi producción artística Where is Diana?, una serie de fotoperformances y vídeos realizados entre Beijing, Tijuana y Ciudad de México durante 2013-2015. Consciente de la obsesión por la identidad, con esta propuesta sugiero la hipótesis de si es posible trascender las fronteras físicas e intelectuales. En mi trabajo incluyo la dinámica del reconocimiento de manera paradójica, ya que me presento encapuchada, irreconocible, sin identidad, ubicándome en la frontera, en los márgenes, en el límite y en la precariedad, a través de un cuerpo que traspasa su lugar y transita de lo privado a lo público. Esta perspectiva teórico-práctica tiene en cuenta la perspectiva de género, así como las herramientas conceptuales que ha creado el feminismo para repensar el sujeto femenino y descentrarlo, mediante un desplazamiento hacia lo no hegemónico o predeterminado por la biología. Las características que se definen como masculinas y femeninas deben ser cuestionadas porque su significado es el resultado de una práctica histórica y social que las ha naturalizado artificialmente. Con esto propongo ejes de resistencia para subvertir las identidades de género y nacionales, que defiendo son fluidas y modificables. Este salir fuera del centro conduciría a la construcción de nuevas subjetividades, creando un marco que amplíe las posibilidades de acción y reconocimiento. Para lograrlo, relaciono mi proceso artístico con la política a través de la reconstrucción de lo sensible en el espacio social, en la forma en que los cuerpos y sus significados actúan en ese espacio. La relación entre arte, política y representación que propongo aquí no tiene que ver con un nivel discursivo, sino que se centra en el gesto artístico y en cómo comunicar los afecto que se imprime en los cuerpos, que tienen una implicación sensorial y política.

    The paper explores the relationships between musical consumption and home among middle and popular urban classes in Argentina, from an ecological perspective, attentive to the environments in which these cultural practices unfold. The analysis is based on the house as a complex space of cultural consumption and investigates different music fans' stories. From this perspective, their musical listening practices are described, considering the housing conditions in which they are conceived and modulated and the moments in the life cycle of those people who engage in them. This research has allowed to capture instances of musical socialization in which various personal strategies regarding music listening at home are presented and varying degrees of attention to the sounds of the house are managed. Thus, the exploration aims to characterize some of the effects of music on people’s daily lives, as well as to present a qualitative analysis of «musical consumption», recovering the practices, logics and contexts in which it emerges and takes on meaning. As a result, the dynamics of individuation and the domestic interdependence frameworks that are shaped with the uses of music in various socio-spatial contexts are characterized. ; El artículo explora las relaciones entre consumo musical y vivienda en jóvenes de clases medias y populares urbanas en Argentina. Esta exploración se realiza desde una perspectiva «ecológica», atenta a los entornos en los que se realiza la instancia de recepción de los consumos musicales. El análisis se sitúa en la casa como espacio complejo del consumo cultural e indaga en relatos de aficionados a la música pertenecientes a distintos segmentos sociales. Desde esta perspectiva, se describen sus prácticas de escucha musical, atendiendo a las condiciones habitacionales en las que las mismas se gestan y modulan y a los momentos del ciclo de vida de las personas que las despliegan. Dicha indagación ha permitido captar instancias de socialización musical en las que se presentan diversas estrategias personales para la escucha en el hogar y se gestionan grados variables de atención sobre los sonidos de la casa. De modo que la exploración aspira a caracterizar algunos de los efectos de la música en la vida cotidiana de los jóvenes, así como a presentar un análisis cualitativo del «consumo musical», recuperando las prácticas, lógicas y contextos en los que emerge y cobra significación. Como resultado del recorrido, se caracterizan las dinámicas de individuación y los entramados de interdependecia domésticos que se modelan con los usos de la música en diversos contextos socioespaciales de la Argentina actual.

    This article offers a qualitative and phenomenological case study of the piñata and its transformations as transcultural object, with a focus of its representations in Mexico, web spaces and social media. The piñata can be analyzed as a transcultural object within its different contexts and forms of representation: as craftwork, religious-popular practice during the posadas, central object of a short film, art gallery on Facebook and lootbox in Fortnite. We can observe, that the transformation processes of all the different forms of the piñata are direct results from the media contexts and cultural practices surrounding them. Therefore, we can testify a certain type of globalization and monetization for the piñata, as well as open practices as localized object and crafts. ; El presente artículo trata de analizar de manera cualitativa y fenomenológica la piñata y sus transformaciones como objeto transcultural desde una perspectiva transmedial en un estudio ejemplar con enfoque en México, en los espacios de la web y las plataformas sociales. Se propone analizar la piñata como objeto transcultural en sus contextos y formas de representaciones distintas: como artesanía, práctica religiosa-popular durante las posadas, objeto central de un cortometraje, galería de arte en Facebook y lootbox en Fortnite. Se puede observar que los procesos de transformación de las formas de representación de la piñata son resultado directo de los ámbitos mediáticos y las prácticas culturales en las que se insertan. Por lo tanto, se puede atestiguar cierto tipo de globalización y mercantilización de la piñata, tal como la apertura a prácticas abiertas como objeto localizado y artesanía.

    What does it mean to be part of fandom? What are the implications of being part of one in Latin America, in this new decade of the 21st century? To answer these questions, in this article we analyze the characteristics of a particular fandom: the one formed by Harry Potter fans in Argentina. More than twenty years after the publication of the first book in this British series, we are interested in how the local fan thinks and “constructs” him/herself, not only in their singularity but also as part of a community. To do this, our analysis focuses on the largest fan convention in the country: the Magic Meeting. Through an ethnographic approach, we describe an event in which fans exchange knowledge, experience and productions around their hobby to help show the ways in which culture is produced, circulated and consumed in Argentina in a globalized and digital world. ; ¿Qué supone ser parte de un fandom? ¿Qué implicancias tiene serlo en Latinoamérica en esta nueva década del siglo XXI? Respondiendo a estos interrogantes, en este artículo analizamos las características de un fandom en particular: aquel conformado por las y los aficionados a Harry Potter en Argentina. A más de veinte años de la publicación del primer libro de esta saga británica, nos interesa cómo se piensa y se «construye» a sí mismo el/la fan local, no solo en su singularidad sino como parte de una comunidad. Para ello, centramos nuestro análisis en la convención de fans más grande del país: la Magic Meeting. Mediante un enfoque etnográfico, describimos un evento en el que las y los fans intercambian conocimientos, experiencias y producciones alrededor de su afición para contribuir a mostrar empíricamente las formas en que se produce, circula y consume cultura en Argentina en un mundo globalizado y digital.

    In this article we intend to reflect on the processes of identity construction that unfold around Argentinian fandom of Japanese mass culture, conceptualized in terms of otakism (Álvarez Gandolfi 2016). To do this, we will analyse how fans of content such as anime, (self)identified as «otaku», give meaning to the experiences linked to their consumption practices, noticing the tensions in the constitution of the national identities of these subjects crossed by transnational objects, between meanings that they assign to «the Argentine» and «the Japanese». All of this in a current context of growing access and global circulation of cross-cultural productions, hand in hand with digitization and the consolidation of participatory culture in an interconnected era (Jenkins et al. 2016), within which we will base ourselves on our own empirical research (Álvarez Gandolfi 2014; Del Vigo & Carpenzano 2014) consisting of the application of qualitative interview techniques with these fans and an ethnographic fieldwork on the main digital platforms through which they interact. On the one hand, we argue that the aforementioned tensions would be resolved through otaku prosums that imply a sex-affective socialization and a syncretic identity bricolage both dislocated and potentially resistant within the framework of waifuism (Del Vigo 2018). On the other hand, we argue that in order to understand the tensions that go through the processes of identity construction based on otakism, the dynamics of fragmentation within the fandom nor the asymmetric ways in which the fans in question signify their favourite contents in their nostalgic biographic narratives cannot be forgotten. Here we will contrast such proposals and arguments in a dialogical way, displaying a conceptual journey that is indebted to cultural studies and fans studies, and currents such as postmodernism and its problematizations, in order to consolidate possible bases to continue studying this increasingly visible and important phenomenon in our contemporary societies. ; En el presente artículo nos proponemos reflexionar sobre los procesos de construcción identitaria que se despliegan en torno del fanatismo en la Argentina por objetos de la cultura de masas japonesa, conceptualizado en términos de otakismo (Álvarez Gandolfi 2016). Para ello, analizaremos cómo los fans de contenidos como el animé, (auto)identificados como «otakus», dan sentido a las experiencias vinculadas con sus prácticas de consumo, advirtiendo las tensiones en la constitución de las identidades nacionales de estos sujetos atravesadas por contenidos transnacionales, entre significaciones que adjudican a «lo argentino» y a «lo japonés». Ello en un contexto actual de creciente acceso y circulación global de producciones transculturales, de la mano de la digitalización y la consolidación de la cultura participativa en una era interconectada (Jenkins et al. 2016), dentro del cual nos basaremos en investigaciones empíricas propias (Álvarez Gandolfi 2014; Del Vigo y Carpenzano 2014) consistentes en la aplicación de técnicas cualitativas de entrevista con estos fans y en un relevamiento etnográfico de las principales plataformas digitales en las que interactúan. Por un lado, se plantea que las mencionadas tensiones serían resueltas mediante los prosumos otaku que implican una socialización sexoafectiva y un bricolaje identitario sincrético tanto dislocado como potencialmente resistente en el marco del waifuismo (Del Vigo 2018). Por otro lado, se argumenta que para comprender dichas tensiones que atraviesan los procesos de construcción de identidades a partir del otakismo no pueden olvidarse las dinámicas de fragmentación en el interior del fandom ni las maneras asimétricas en que los fans en cuestión las significan en sus narrativas biográficas nostálgicas. Aquí contrastaremos tales planteos y argumentaciones de modo dialógico, desplegando un recorrido conceptual deudor de los estudios culturales y los estudios sobre fans, y de corrientes como el posmodernismo y sus problematizaciones, en pos de consolidar bases posibles para seguir estudiando este fenómeno cada vez más visible e importante en las sociedades contemporáneas.
