    T. S. Eliot's last play was drafted originally in 1955 but not completed until three years later. Lord Claverton, an eminent former cabinet minister and banker, is helped to confront his past by the love of his daughter, his Antigone. The dialogue in The Elder Statesman, the love scenes in particular, contain some of Eliot's most tender and expressive writing for the theatre. The play was first performed at the Edinburgh Festival in 1958.

'The Idiot' is a dramatisation of Dostoievsky's original novel. In creating this stage play, Simon Gray chose some of the most vivid and contrasting episodes recounting the strange involvement between Prince Myshkin, the good natured 'Idiot', the beautiful Nastasya Filippovna and her desperate lover and husband, Rogozhin. The ambiguity of these episodes and the paradoxical atmosphere of the novel - hovering between sombre tragedy and grotesque farce - is heightened by the use of a strange, sinister commentator, the character of Ferdyschenko. 'The Idiot' was first presented by the National Theatre Company at the Old Vic, London, in July 1970.

Written with Eldridge's trademark lyricism of everyday family life and interaction, 'The Knot of the Heart' is a play where emotions are high and relationships are sensitively written. Beautiful and privileged, Lucy is enjoying a burgeoning career in television. But her social drug habit has become a serious addiction, casting a dark shadow over her future happiness. As her charmed life begins to slip away, Lucy comes to realise that the devoted support of her family does not come without a price. 'The Knot of the Heart' is atmospheric and poetic without undermining the characters' realism. The play was first performed in 2011 at the Almeida Theatre, London.

The night before his assassination, Martin Luther King retires to room 306 in the now-famous Lorraine Motel after giving an acclaimed speech to a massive church congregation. When a mysterious young maid visits him to deliver a cup of coffee, King is forced to confront his past and the future of his people. Portraying rhetoric, hope and ideals of social change, 'The Mountaintop' also explores what it is to be human in the face of inevitable death. Premiered in London in 2009, it is the third of Katori Hall's 'Memphis Plays' tetralogy.

Two men command the stage. They discuss in bullish tones what they intend to do to a third man, who sits gagged, blindfolded and bound to a chair. The acts of violence and abuse referred to are present in the speech rather than the action but an oppressive air of menace persists. Pinter directed the first production of this unflinching dramatic sketch, premiered in July 1991 at the Royal Court Theatre Upstairs, London.

The Owl and the Pussycat want to get married - but they're in the middle of the sea! They reach the land where the Bong Trees grow, and find a vicar and a ring. Over the course of their seach, they meet a whole host of characters, including the Dong with the Luminous Nose, the Quangle Wangle, the Runcible Spoon, Professor Bosh, the grumpy Pig and the absent-minded Turkey. Will the Owl and the Pussycat have their dream wedding with their new friends before they all get gobbled up by the Plum Pudding Flea? Based on the nonsense verse of Edward Lear, David Wood and Sheila Ruskin's pantomime was first produced at the Swan Theatre, Worcester in 1968.

Moscow, now. A small flat. One family, three generations, the same hangover. Life after communism is utterly different and yet somehow eerily familiar. Petya's dodging the draft, Sasha's jumping with every ring of the bell, Ivan's brought a mysterious stranger home, and now their guest Thomas is asking questions. Who do you trust? The state may not be spying on you, but can you say the same for your nearest and dearest? Tracing the legacy of communism, 'Donkey Heart' asks what a modern Russia stands for, as the deep bruise of history, once hidden, now works its way to the surface. The play premiered at the Old Red Lion, London, in May 2014.

Set in the 18th century, 'The Straw Chair' tells the story of 17-year-old Isabel and her minister husband's arrival on the remote island of Hirta, or St Kilda. Their encounter with the island's inhabitants, and especially the disturbing Rachel of Grange, changes their lives forever. A real historical figure, Rachel of Grange was involved in a bitter divorce; her actions led to her erstwhile husband being successfully tried for treason. He, in turn, had her kidnapped and incarcerated on various remote Scottish islands. 'The Straw Chair', premiered in Edinburgh in 1988, is set during one such incarceration, on Hirta.

When a refugee breaks into Joan's cellar, she must make a choice; does she hand him into the authorities, or help him make his escape. He makes a convincing argument; represented by an actor who speaks the lines, and a dummy who embodies them, he shows how a person can do only what they must do to survive and still be deemed illegal. The play highlights the conflict between our obligations to society's laws and our desire to help one another, and shows how these often irresolvable duties can lead to catastrophe for everyone involved. 'The Under Room' was first performed at the Roade School, Northampton, in 2005.

'The Usual Auntijies' is a bitter-sweet comic drama that visits the lives of four women as they embark on an inspiring emotional and comic journey to overcome the past abuse and rediscover their sense of life, love and happiness. The play explores ideas of family and the cultural differences that exist between the East and West, and is a celebration of all women of a particular age whose desires and struggles are too often forgotten. 'The Usual Auntijies' was first presented in 2011 at the Belgrade Theatre, Coventry.

A darkly comic and unnerving play composed of the radio dialogue between a cab service controller and a driver who has come to an unplanned halt near a dark park in Crystal Palace. As the Controller informs the driver of his next job, picking up a passenger at Victoria Station, it becomes clear that the driver has no intention of moving and is instead focused on his current passenger, who remains motionless in the back seat. 'Victoria Station' was first presented as part of the triple bill 'Other Places' at the National Theatre, London, in October 1982.

What business have Mrs. Artminster and her son Jerry in the Home Counties that necessitates a long stay in a small-town hotel in the off-season? The explanation they give the proprietor is obviously contrived, but he has his reasons for allowing them to stay. In Simon Gray's first play for the stage - which opened at Wyndham's Theatre in October, 1967 - the truth is complex and its revelation electrifying.
