Your heart dances. The world seems strange and new. You want to laugh and skip and fall forever. You are in love. You are in love with the wrong person. Laura, the respectable suburban wife, and Alec, the idealistic, married doctor, meet in a station buffet, fall passionately in love but are doomed never to find fulfilment. David Lean's iconic 1945 movie, 'Brief Encounter', was written by Noël Coward and was based on one of his one-act plays, 'Still Life', written a decade earlier. This version for the stage was adapted by Emma Rice and first presented at the Cinema Haymarket in February 2008.

Despite is basically defeatist and hurtful approach as an unsuccessful British professor attempts to cope with divorce, homosexuality and academia, 'Butley' contrives to be very funny. The stark, unsentimental approach to the homosexual relationship, the cynical send-up of academic life, the sceptical view of the teacher-pupil associations are all stunningly illuminated by continuous explosions of sardonic, needling, feline, vituperative and civilised lines. 'Butley' was first produced in Oxford in 1971.

In 1960s Liverpool Tom and Billy hide their love in the closet, then go their separate ways. As pits close and the dole queues grow, Mickey and Russell escape to find Heaven in 1980s London. But today the paparazzi turn judge and jury over a love story that could tear this family apart. Then a grieving mother gets lost up a mountain, with a vicar for some dubious consolation. A deeply moving, funny, uplifting and often magical story about love, honesty and being brave enough to sing out at the top of your voice - with style. 'Canary' premiered at the Liverpool Playhouse in April 2010.

When Lizaveta's simple farm life is smashed apart, she has to run. Her quest to start again leads her through mud and blood, past holy fools and icon painters, to things she has never even imagined. From a war-torn ex-Soviet state to the streets of Manchester, this bold and gripping play questions death, love and consumerism in the twenty-first century. Rory Mullarkey's first play premiered at the Royal Exchange Theatre, Manchester, on 3 April 2013.

The action of 'Celebration' takes place in a swish London restaurant where two strategy consultants are dining with their respective wives. At an adjacent table a banker and his wife banter over his recently discovered affair. While Pinter gets a lot of laughs out of these gold-plated philistines, he also suggests they are displaced people. Shorn of any inherited values, they live in an eternal present of sex, food and conspicuous consumption. 'Celebration' premiered at the Almeida Theatre, London, in March 2000.

'Chair' is the third play in Bond's 'The Chair Plays' trilogy. In it, Alice is looking after Billy, a young man she took in to her home - illegally - when he was a baby. One day, when she witnesses a soldier escorting an old woman, someone Alice believes she knows, to prison, she offers a kindness: the soldier has been waiting with his prisoner for over three hours; Alice offers him chair to sit on. This basic, human gesture explodes the secure and private world that Alice had built to protect herself and Billy. 'Chair' was first broadcast on BBC Radio 4 on 7 April 2000.

This landmark state-of-the-nation play is a panoramic drama portraying the age-old battle between realism and idealism. The kettle boils in 1936 as the fascists are marching. Tea is brewed in 1946, with disillusion in the air at the end of the war. In 1956, as rumours spread of Hungarian revolution, the cup is empty. Sarah Khan, an East End Jewish mother, is a feisty political fighter and a staunch communist. Battling against the State and her shirking husband, she desperately tries to keep her family together. Chicken Soup with Barley captures the collapse of an ideology alongside the disintegration of a family. The play, the first in a trilogy with 'Roots' and 'I'm Talking about Jerusalem', was first performed at the Belgrade Theatre, Coventry in 1958.

In 1931, composer Richard Strauss and writer Stephan Zweig embark on an invigorating artistic partnership. But Zweig is a Jew and the Nazis are on the march. Is it possible to keep artistic aspiration and political action separate? How fine is the line between collaboration and betrayal? 'Collaboration', a companion piece to 'Taking Sides', was first performed at the Minerva Theatre, Chichester, in July 2008.

In 1941 the German physicist Werner Heisenberg visited his Danish counterpart, Niels Bohr, an old friend and colleague in Copenhagen; they had revolutionised atomic physics in the 1920s. But now the world had changed, and the two men were on opposite sides in a world war. The meeting was fraught with danger and embarrassment, and ended in disaster. Why Heisenberg went to Copenhagen and what he wanted to say to Bohr are questions which have exercised historians ever since. In Frayn's play Heisenberg meets Bohr and his wife once again to work out how we can ever know why we do what we do.

'Coriolanus' was first published in the First Folio of 1623; we have no recording of a first performance contemporary with Shakespeare. As a result, dating the play has proven to be a difficult task, with most modern critics placing the writing of the play in the second half of the 1610s. Affording 'Coriolanus' a genre is similarly tricky: it is 'The Tragedy of Coriolanus' in the First Folio, but it is deeply indebted to the sub-genre of 'Roman plays' that form a significant part of the Shakespearean oeuvre.

Peter finds the idea of sitting at his desk in a publishing house considerably less attractive than attempting to seduce a free-lance cover designer while his wife is out teaching English to foreigners and shopping at Sainsbury. 'Dog Days' is about the sad and hilarious consequences of Peter's disenchantment with his job, his wife, his public schoolmaster brother and himself. The play is a companion piece to 'Otherwise Engaged' and has the same remarkable blend of wit and pathos, humour and despair. 'Dog Days' was first performed in October 1976 at the Oxford Playhouse.

The newly acquired wardrobe filling most of the living room of the Godboys' decaying house seems unnecessarily large for most purposes. Eric and Doris upstairs could manage without one, surely. Whatever scheme Mr Godboy has in mind, however, he does seem to be going about it the hard way; and it certainly sits oddly with his apparent worship of the police force and all it stands for. It's not entirely clear, either, why he married May Godboy in the first place. There's little satisfaction for her in the relationship. 'Dutch Uncle' was first performed at the Aldwych Theatre, London, in March 1969.

In a small country town three boys die from a gang of four. Sid, who's left behind, is struggling to cope with his loneliness, trying effortfully to stay normal and hoping to manage the feelings of his worried parents April and Gordon. Life, love and loss in a picture postcard town is laid bare in this heartbreaking but darkly comic play. Through a series of interweaving accounts 'For Once' cuts to the heart of a family, and a community, turned upside down by unimaginable tragedy. Tim Price's debut play, it premiered at the Hampstead Theatre, London in July 2011.

First staged at the Almeida in 2011, 'Becky Shaw' is an amusing and cleverly constructed comedy about ambition, the cost of being truthful and the perils of a blind date. The fast and funny dialogue navigates between five distinctively perverse and disingenuously dysfunctional characters. From the moment that Becky arrives overdressed for her blind date with straight-talking Max, it is clear the evening won't go to plan. In the immediate fallout, Becky becomes an object of devotion for her boss Andrew, who appears to have a taste for vulnerable women. In turn Andrew's wife Suzanna turns to her step-brother Max for comfort, and their mutual desire begins to resurface. Gina Gionfriddo's masterful play is a biting American comedy with sharp, witty dialogue and a carefully crafted story arc. Character-driven, 'Becky Shaw' is a comic tale of tangled love lives and a subtle but acerbic comedy of manners.

An adaptation of Molière's classic, 'Tartuffe' was first performed at The Kennedy Center, Washington DC, in May 1982. Gray's intention was to find, if possible, a completely English play that could pass under the original title, set in the original social and historical context. The Englishness of it was thus a matter of the psychology and the expression. The first entailed the transformation of some of the characters in order that it could be understood why they behave as they do. The second entailed that the characters should speak in a language that expressed the needs and fears of their natures.

'Tender Napalm', first staged at London's Southwark Playhouse in 2011, is a high-impact, high-concept two handed play which explores the landscape that is a relationship between a man and a woman. Explosive, poetic and brutal, the play re-examines and redefines a savagely romantic language of love. Setting, character and narrative remain unspecified. Instead, 'Tender Napalm' is real time drama: simply two people dissecting their relationship through a distorted mixture of memory and imagination, monologues and conversations fusing into a strange and frantic fantasy of sex, violence, conflict and faith.

'The BFG' is based on Roald Dahl's novel. Sophie can't sleep: looking out the window, she sees a giant blowing dreams into children's heads through their bedroom windows. Having been spotted, the Big Friendly Giant grabs Sophie and takes her back to his cave, where they eat snozzcumbers and drink frobscottle, before galloping off to Dream Country to collect some dreams. To save the people of England from being eaten up by the man-eating giants, Sophie and the BFG must concoct a dream that will persuade the Queen to believe in evil giants, so that with the help of the army and the air force, they might be rid of them once and for all.

If you found God's number on a business card, would you call it? For Earl, the answer is yes. Seeking answers, he dials the number, hoping to reach a divine being. Instead, he discovers something altogether too familiar - bureaucracy. Before he sees God, there are countless hoops to jump through and forms to fill out, all pushed on him by inoffensive middlemen. Will he find God at the end of the tunnel? 'The Boy on the Swing' premiered at the Arcola Theatre, London, in 2011. Witty dialogue and cleverly plotted absurdity drive this unexpected journey into the nature of the divine and the mundane.

'The Cocktail Party' focuses on a troubled married couple who, through the intervention of a mysterious stranger, settle their problems and move on with their lives. The play starts out seeming to be a light satire of the traditional British drawing room comedy. As it progresses, however, the work becomes a darker philosophical treatment of human relations. As in many of Eliot's works, the play uses absurdist elements to expose the isolation of the human condition. It was first performed at the Edinburgh Festival in August 1939.

'The Common Pursuit' chronicles the erosion of the ambitions of a smug, elitist group of Cambridge friends. Gray regarded finishing the writing of the play, first performed at the Lyric Theatre, Hammersmith, in July 1984, as the only moment of pure happiness he ever experienced in the playwriting business.
