Twins Iola and Anest remain devoted to each other. Ageing fast, and with the time they have left together growing more fragile by the day, they arrive at a desperate decision. Word of this reaches Anest's daughter, Menna, who rushes back to her long-abandoned childhood home where her own ideas of love and compromise will be tested to the limit. 'Salt, Root and Roe' is a wry, heart-breaking drama of love, grief and acceptance set against the mythical backdrop of North Pembrokeshire. The play premiered in a production by the Donmar Warehouse at Trafalgar Studios, London on 10 November 2011.

Set in the final days of the Second World War at Miss Mary's Press and Curl beauty parlour and women's boarding house in Memphis, Tennessee, 'Saturday Night/Sunday Morning' unites a group of young women whose lives have been affected by the loss of men to the war and the upheaval of social attitudes that followed. At times laugh-out-loud funny, at times tragically sad, 'Saturday Night/Sunday Morning' always rings true. It is the second of Katori Hall's 'Memphis Plays'.

Lucienne is being pursued by the married Pontagnac, who is astounded to discover that she is already married to his friend Vatelin, and also has an admirer called Redillon. Lucienne has sworn to be faithful as long as her husband remains so too. But then a keen old 'indiscretion' of her husband unexpectedly arrives, with her own husband, from Germany. Everyone ends up in the Hotel Ultimus, where the guests include an old army doctor and his deaf wife, in Paris to celebrate their wedding anniversary. Mayhem ensues. 'Sauce for the Goose' was written in 1896.

Gray's play 'Otherwise Engaged' was about a man (Simon Hench) who tries to keep the world at bay by pretending it does not really exist. The world nevertheless keeps coming at him as all those closest to him require an explanation for his existence. In 1996 Simon Gray wrote this sequel, in which he explores how Simon Hench responds to the catastrophes and absurdities of his life a quarter century on, when explanations are still being required. 'Simply Disconnected' was first performed at the Minerva Theatre, Chichester, in May 1996.

'Spoiled', first performed at Glasgow's Close Theatre Club in 1970, is about the tensions in a teacher's home when he invites one of his pupils to spend the weekend before the exam for some last-minute coaching. The over-mothered Donald is a nervous boy anxious to better himself for his mother's sake and to please his teacher. Howarth's natural enthusiasm and flair for getting the best out of dull pupils seem to mask a kind of self-indulgence. Joanna, his heavily pregnant wife, full of unease, begins to see this clearly as the weekend progresses: the realisation only makes her more vulnerable.

What on earth is happening to our planet? And who knows what to do? Certainties are few: every living thing is related to every other living thing; our actions have consequences; change is continual and inevitable. The National Theatre asked four of the country's most exciting writers to investigate. The team spent six months interviewing key individuals from the worlds of science, politics, business and philosophy to create a fast-paced and provocative new play. Greenland premiered at the National Theatre, London, in February 2011.

Due to the survival of three early, distinct versions of the text of Hamlet, the process of editing 'Hamlet' has required its editors to consider which of the texts - known as Quarto 1 (Q1), Quarto 2 (Q2), or Folio (F) - is truly 'authoritative'. For the Arden Third Series edition of Hamlet, editors Ann Thompson and Neil Taylor chose to reject the traditions of elevating one text above the others or creating a composite text from all three versions. Q1, printed in 1603, is often known as the 'bad' quarto due to its significant differences from both the Q2 and F texts.

A woman sitting alone hears a constant knocking at the door, but no one is there. Her husband returns and tells her of an extraordinary meeting with an old woman found roaming in a ruined part of the city. Then a stranger comes to the door, like a visitor from an earlier, lost world. What follows is tragic and absurdly funny until both seem to melt into a strange hallucinatory vision of the future. 'Have I None' was first presented in November 2000 at Castle Vale Artsite, Birmingham.

Cath and Phil walked down the street, saw a 'To Let' board, and rented the top floor of Pat's house, the studio that used to be the boys' room, where she put Eric when he had his cough, in that chair just there behind the curtain. Up alone in their little attic, their relationship is put to the test. Which side of the flat is Cath's? Does Phil own the alcove? Will they ever throw out Theodore, the abandoned toy dog? First produced at the Donmar Warehouse, London, in 1993, 'Here' is a funny, accurate look at a young couple struggling to make joint decisions as they feel their individuality slipping away.

'Her Vote' features a young suffragist whose plans to attend a political meeting are disrupted by an unexpected proposal from her young man. Her firm resolve to attend a suffrage meeting that night counts for nothing when a much more desirable offer arises ... The play provides an interesting male viewpoint on the movement, criticising the Girl for wanting to be part of a political movement without really knowing about it or understanding it. 'Her Vote' was first performed at Terry's Theatre, London, in May 1909.

'He Who Says No' forms a pair with 'He Who Says Yes', inspired by the Japanese Noh play 'Taniko', relating two different versions of a fable about consenting to a cause. The Boy demands to be taken by his teacher on a dangerous journey into the mountains, so that he can bring back medicine for his ill mother. The teacher acquiesces reluctantly, but when the boy can't go on, either he or the journey will have to be sacrificed. The didactic Lehrstc̈ke (or 'learning-plays') were written during 1929 and 1930, and show an abrupt rejection of most of the trappings of conventional theatre.

'He Who Says Yes' forms a pair with 'He Who Says No', inspired by the Japanese Noh play 'Taniko', relating two different versions of a fable about consenting to a cause.

Harry is a literary agent, Louise a writer. They are young and happily married and are choosing a house in the country, an idyllic place where she can write, where small children will be happy, and where they can both relax. The local vicar, with some surprising revelations about faith, brings doubt into their smug existence. And, as the play moves on, and everyone grows up or grows older, country life seems to bring less and less joy and peace and proves to be quite the opposite of the idyll they envisage. 'Hidden Laughter' was first presented in June 1990 at London's Vaudeville Theatre.

'How the Vote Was Won' is set in the living room of Horace and Ethel Cole in Brixton, London, on the day of a general women's strike called by Suffragettes because the Government has said that women do not need votes as they are all looked after by men. All the women who have previously supported themselves agree to leave their jobs and homes and instead insist on support from their nearest male relative. As Horace's female relatives arrive at his house one after the other, he comes to realise something must be done and rushes to Parliament, to demand 'Votes for Women' as soon as possible. The play was first performed at the Royalty Theatre, London, in April 1909.

Set in the early noughties, 'Hurt Village' is the story of a community disregarded by the state. A housing project in North Memphis, originally developed in the 1950s to attract white residents, the area had, by the nineties, become a byword for poverty and drug-related crime. In 2000, the Memphis City government received a $35 million federal grant in order to redevelop the area, and in 2003, the neighbourhood was demolished, following the relocation of hundreds of black residents. The fourth of Hall's 'Memphis Plays', 'Hurt Village' premiered in New York in 2012.

In 1611 John Donne was living in a restless, changing world, in which a new Bible, a new science, and a decadent court tore at longstanding loyalties and deeply-held convictions. Unceasingly protean himself, Donne lived several lives at once, writing political tracts as well as popular songs, translating the 'Song of Solomon' at the same time as translating Galileo, and finding his rise in theological circles impeded by his colourful rakish past. At various times a politician, soldier, poet, musician, lawyer, courtier, theologian and cleric; a man born into one of England's most distinguished Catholic families who would die as one of its most renowned Protestants; Donne was always becoming something new. 'Into Thy Hands' is a portrait of this fascinating, eloquent and brilliant man, and his struggle to be faithful to all parts of his body and soul. First presented in 2011 at Wilton's Music Hall as part of Jericho House's 1611 Utopia season, 'Into Thy Hands' is a play about faith, sex and the translation of the Bible.
