    Main description: Werke der Weltliteratur und ihre Autoren verbinden sich im kulturellen Bewusstsein miteinander. Montesquieu repräsentiert dabei Werte, die sich als modern, als rational lesbar und in der politischen und der literarischen Praxis als demokratisch und erfolgreich erwiesen haben. Seine Texte basieren auf Traditions- und Glaubenswerten des europäischen Abendlandes und stellen sie zugleich in progressiv-optimierender Weise in Frage.Montesquieus Art der Auseinandersetzung steht unausgesprochen im Kontext aktueller Diskussionen der unterschiedlichen Disziplinen. Daraus ergab sich der interdisziplinäre Aufbau des Kongresses, der leider wichtige - teils sogar grundsätzliche - Aspekte wie Philosophie und Kriegswissenschaft nicht berücksichtigen konnte.Es wurde deutlich, dass die Aktualität Montesquieus weit über seinen Beitrag zum Funktionskomplex der checks and balances durch Gewaltenverteilung in erfolgreichen Staatsformen hinausgeht, dass sein synthetisches Interpretieren für das globale Erkennen komplexer Sachverhalte ein anregendes Vorbild darstellt und dass seine Beschreibung weiblichen Verhaltens und Entscheidens weniger fiktionalen Reduktionen als realen Lebensverhältnissen entsprang.250 Jahre nach dem Tod Montesquieus haben wir uns das Ziel gesetzt, aus unterschiedlichen disziplinären Perspektiven heraus neue Interpretationen und Forschungsergebnisse zu diskutieren, um die Spannung zwischen Entstehung, Rezeption und heutiger Auseinandersetzung mit den Ideen und dem Werk Montesquieus sichtbar zu machen und auf neue Lektüremöglichkeiten hinzuweisen.

    Le présent volume contient les Actes du colloque international sur les " Représentations et conceptions de l'espace dans la culture médiévale " qui s'est déroulé du 19 au 21 octobre 2009 sous les auspices de l'Institut d'Etudes Médiévales de l'Université de Fribourg (Suisse). La participation de spécialistes de rang international à cette rencontre atteste du vif intérêt que suscitent aujourd'hui dans la communauté scientifique la perception et la compréhension médiévales de l'espace. En effet, d'importantes études menées au cours de la dernière décennie auront éclairé sous un nouveau jour la signification complexe de l'espace dans la civilisation du Moyen Age latin, qui se décline sur plusieurs registres : social, économique, politique, culturel et religieux. Loin d'apaiser la curiosité scientifique, les études récentes sur ces diverses facettes de l'espace médiéval ont ouvert de nouveaux horizons, suscité des interrogations nouvelles, mis à jour un vaste chantier d'investigation sur les rapports aux lieux et à l'espace dans la vie et la culture du Moyen Age européen. Le colloque visait donc à explorer davantage quelques pistes de recherche. Il a réuni des chercheurs de pays, de langues, de cultures et de domaines scientifiques différents. Il a ainsi donné lieu à un dialogue animé qui aura permis de confronter et d'enrichir mutuellement les visions de l'espace médiéval des spécialistes de l'histoire, de la philosophie, de l'histoire de l'art et de la littérature This volume contains the records of the international Freiburg Colloquium of the same name which was held by the Medieval Institute of the University of Freiburg from October 19 to 21, 2009. The academic reconstruction of the conception and perception of space in the culture of the Latin Middle Ages requires a differentiated treatment and corresponding competencies - something which can be realized only through an interdisciplinary approach. Each contributor to this volume examines the given theme from the perspective of his or her own specialist field

    The image, before representing, to signify, acts and makes act. The performance of images, which this book undertakes exploration, is to be understood first of all as the evaluation of their effectiveness: what are the effects of images? It is then their agency: in what way are images living beings? It is also their performativity: as there are acts of speech, there are acts of image whose modalities can be detailed. Finally, it is their power: what can an image, including a text, for example, be incapable?

    Christian image holds a special place here because, far from being a simple "Bible of illiterate "subject to the reign of the text, it permeates all aspects of the life and thought of Christian societies, from their theological and anthropological foundations - God created man in his image; the Son is the image of the Father - up to the most diverse uses of visual objects. But in the West it is not only in the Middle Ages that the images are active: this book is also devoted to the new forms of visual performances that appeared with the Renaissance or the mass-media society. L’image, avant de représenter, de signifier, agit et fait agir. La performance des images, dont ce livre entreprend l’exploration, est à comprendre d’abord comme l’évaluation de leur efficacité : quels sont les effets des images ? C’est ensuite leur agentivité : en quelle manière les images sont-elles des êtres vivants ? C’est aussi leur performativité : comme il y a des actes de parole, il y a des actes d’image dont les modalités peuvent être détaillées. Enfin, c’est leur puissance : que peut une image, dont un texte, par exemple, serait incapable ?

    L’image chrétienne tient ici une place à part car, loin d’être une simple « Bible des illettrés » soumise au règne du texte, elle imprègne tous les aspects de la vie et de la pensée des sociétés chrétiennes, depuis leurs fondements théologiques et anthropologiques – Dieu créa l’homme à son image ; le Fils est l’image du Père – jusqu’aux utilisations les plus diverses des objets visuels. Mais en Occident ce n’est pas seulement au Moyen Âge que les images sont actives : ce livre est aussi consacré aux nouvelles formes de performances visuelles qui sont apparues avec la Renaissance ou la société mass-médiatique.

    Quels que soient le lieu ou la civilisation que l’on explore, des relations profondes entre religion et art se décèlent. L’art traduit volontiers les aspects des fonctions religieuses, soit dans le cadre organisé d’un rituel, soit plus spontanément, dans l’expression de la foi personnelle ou collective. Les religions font appel aux artistes pour rendre apparent et intelligible l’invisible mais se heurtent souvent à eux en leur imposant des formes. Mais si bien des civilisations ont fait l’objet d’études fouillées sur la manière dont elles articulaient l’art et la religion, force est de constater que très peu de chercheurs se sont attelés à une vue transversale de ces notions. Cet ouvrage s’inscrit dès lors dans une perspective comparative ayant pour but de souligner les diachronies et les spécificités religieuses.

    The enigmatic nature of Mallarmé’s works disconcerted his first readers and they were published at a period when the number of newspaper and periodicals was rapidly increasing. In the last quarter of the 19th century many comments on his writings appeared in print, some were laudatory, others claimed that he wished to found a poetic School of the Unintelligible. Today’s reader will find gathered here reviews published when individual works first appeared and critical texts on his work in general. Among the aspects of his influence on his contemporaries which have been little known hitherto are the reactions of those who heard the first performances of Debussy’s Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun in 1894 and 1895, and the use that was made of Mallarmé’s name in aesthetic and political polemics at the time, associating him with Odilon Redon or Émile Zola. Some of his utterances made at the celebrated Mardis are also recorded here. L’œuvre de Mallarmé laissa ses premiers lecteurs perplexes et cela à une époque où les journaux et les périodiques se multipliaient. Dans le dernier quart du XIXe siècle les commentaires sur ses poèmes étaient nombreux, les uns dus à ses admirateurs, les autres à des critiques qui croyaient qu’il se voulait le fondateur d’une « école de l’inintelligible ». Sont rassemblées ici des pages qui furent publiées au moment de la parution de tel ouvrage ou des textes polémiques suscités par son œuvre en général. Parmi les aspects de son influence sur ses contemporains qui n’ont guère été évoqués jusqu’ici sont les réactions aux premières auditions du Prélude à l’Après-midi d’un faune de Debussy en 1894 et 1895 et l’usage du nom de Mallarmé à des fins de combat esthétique ou politique, en l’associant soit à Odilon Redon soit à Zola. Ici on trouve aussi des propos entendus par quelqu’un qui avait assisté à ses Mardis.

    The Roman de Renart was for long little known, even in France, in its original mediaeval version, but the reputation of the wily fox was widespread, in large measure because of his fame in the Middle Ages. This fame had spread to much of the rest of Western Europe and the stories of Renart had inspired many different literary works in many countries; they were among the earlier published works in Belgium, Holland, Germany, and England. A copious iconography - mediaeval wall-paintings, misereres, architectural carvings, manuscript illustrations, and, later, book illustrations - maintained the frame of the wily fox. Renart, originally a comic but also satirical personage, finally became one of the most popular personifications of the devil in literature and in art. This book will interest the specialist in many fields, treating as it does a subject that had ramifications not only in French literature, but also in German, Italian, Flemish and Dutch, English, and mediaeval Latin literature. Interest in the Roman de Renart has increased notably of late, and the iconography of Renart continues to attract attention. For students of English literature the subject of Renart is an important one, first because of the close relationship of mediaeval French and English literature, and also because of Chaucer's charming story of the Nun's Priest Tale, which was largely inspired by the oldest French branch of Renart

    Madeleine de l?Aubespine (1546?1596), the toast of courtly and literary circles in sixteenth-century Paris, penned beautiful love poems to famous women of her day. The well-connected daughter and wife of prominent French secretaries of state, l?Aubespine was celebrated by her male peers for her erotic lyricism and scathingly original voice. Rather than adopt the conventional self-effacement that defined female poets of the time, l?Aubespine?s speakers are sexual, dominant, and defiant; and her subjects are women who are able to manipulate, rebuke, and even humiliate men. Die Edition bietet ein sprach- und literaturwissenschaftliche Einleitung, untersucht detailliert die zentralen sprachlichen Charakteristika des Manuskripts, hebt außerdem die Wandlungsfähigkeit innerhalb der Renart-Tradition hervor und dokumentiert die Kreativität eines Kopisten, der den bearbeiten Text um eigene Verse erweitert
