    The concept at issue in this book is Weltliteratur, or World Literature. Theoretical

    frameworks usually view the now-famous epistolary exchange between Johann

    Wolfgang von Goethe and the young Johann Peter Eckermann as the true foundation

    of the concept, (though earlier promoters of similar ideas, such as August

    Wilhelm Schlegel can be cited)1. Goethe wrote this to Eckermann in a well-known

    letter in 1827: “National literature is now a rather unmeaning term; the epoch of

    World Literature is at hand, and everyone must strive to hasten its approach”2.

    Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels as well as Richard Moulton and Erich Auerbach,

    among many others, also all contributed to the category from their respective

    historical moments and theoretical perspectives. Marx and Engels, of course,

    took a materialist point of view that emphasized the expansion of the capitalist

    economic project and its progressive conquest of the world as a market. Richard

    Moulton and Erich Auerbach, on the other hand, came from a humanistic philological

    perspective that, as Jérôme David has put it in his reflections on the different

    genealogies of World Literature, “derived from the anxious preoccupation

    with what the literary works mean” (2013: 14) and focused very early on the problems

    of translation and canonization that would become crucial for the conceptual

    debates of our time

It is structured around three conceptual blocks: "gatekeepers", as the dispositives and actors mediating the international circulation of literature; "translation", as an unavoidable but always problematic mechanism; and "local literatures", as modes of writing that remain intrinsically tied to their contexts ¿Cómo ingresa la literatura en circulación internacional? ¿Qué factores regulan dicho proceso? ¿Qué transformaciones sufre cuando lo hace? ¿Qué sucede con la que nunca lo consigue o se lo propone? Con foco en la literatura que, de acuerdo con postulados teóricos diseñados en los años 60, es concebida como latinoamericana y con contribuciones de destacados investigadores de diferentes lugares de Europa, América Latina y EE. UU., el volumen Literatura latinoamericana mundial intenta ser un aporte crítico al actual debate sobre literatura mundial. Tres bloques conceptuales, que también son tres de los principales núcleos en torno a los cuales gira la discusión, lo organizan: "gatekeepers", con foco en los dispositivos, actores o instituciones que vehiculizan u obturan la circulación internacional de literatura; "traducción", con reflexiones acerca de este mecanismo ineludible, pero siempre problemático, para que la literatura trascienda fronteras nacionales; y "literaturas locales", concentrado en escrituras y proyectos que, al permanecer aferrados a contextos específicos, constituyen el lado negado de ciertos modelos hegemónicos de la teoría de la literatura mundial

    "Taking its cue from recent theories of literary geography and fiction, Genealogical Fictions argues that narratives of familial decline shape the history of the modern novel, as well as the novel's relationship to history. Stories of families in crisis, Jobst Welge argues, reflect the experience of historical and social change in regions or nations perceived as "peripheral." Though geographically and temporally diverse, the novels Welge considers all demonstrate a relation among family and national history, genealogical succession, and generational experience, along with social change and modernization. Welge's wide-ranging comparative study focuses on the novels of the late nineteenth century, but it also includes detailed analyses of the pre-Victorian origin of the genealogical-historical novel and the evolution of similar themes in twentieth-century literature. Moving through time, he uncovers often-unsuspected novelistic continuities and international transformations and echoes, from Maria Edgeworth's Castle Rackrent, published in 1800, to G. Tomasi di Lampedusa's 1958 book Il Gattopardo.By revealing the "family resemblance" of novels from Great Britain, Italy, Spain, Portugal, and Brazil, this volume shows how genealogical narratives take on special significance in contexts of cultural periphery. Welge links private and public histories, while simultaneously integrating detailed accounts of various literary fields across the globe. In combining theories of the novel, recent discussions of cultural geography, and new approaches to genealogical narratives, Genealogical Fictions addresses a significant part of European and Latin American literary history in which texts from different national cultures illuminate each other in unsuspected ways and reveal the repetition, as well as the variation, among them. This book should be of interest to students and scholars of comparative literature, world literature, and the history and theory of the modern novel"-- "In this truly comparative study of 19th and 20th-century literature, Jobst Welge argues that there is a "deep structure" to certain novels of this period that centers on the idea of genealogy and family history. Welge examines British, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, and Brazilian novels that share a "genealogical narrative" featuring stories of familial decline. Al aflojar el lazo entre experiencia límite y narración y asignarle un lugar preponderante a esta última, este volumen propone un examen de lo que podría ser pensado como el régimen simbólico de lo postestimonial. Explora, así, fórmulas literarias, fílmicas y teatrales que, independientemente de su pretensión de veracidad, “hacen sonar la experiencia”

    The volume asks how the literatures of the Americas and the Caribbean present multiple or internally differentiated spaces and how these are distinguished or traversed by different temporalities. The historical and (post)colonial experiences of these areas turns them into especially fertile ground for the exploration of the connections between landscape/geography and historical/temporal palimpsests as well as the specificities of literary form. The contributions are dedicated to individual, yet conceptually interconnected studies of staggered, multiple, non-simultaneous temporalities in modern and contemporary literature. The volume adopts a comparative perspective throughout and intends to foster the dialogue between the study of Latin/American and Caribbean literatures—in Spanish, Portuguese, French, and English. Therefore, the individual essays are not grouped according to geographical or linguistic areas, but follow a trajectory from spatiotemporal constellations of the 19th century to ruined/catastrophic landscapes and the geopoetic inscriptions of time in regions. The essays should appeal to all readers interested in World Literature, Hemispheric Studies as well as temporal approaches to space and geography

    Globalization is not a new phenomenon. Ideas have been circulating all over Europe (and the world) since ancient times, and intercultural dialog is a wide field offering a great variety of approaches. In such times as ours, when the world is swift to change and cultures are destined to meet (sometimes, alas, to clash), the place of literature, or broadly speaking: human and social sciences, within society is often questioned and needs redefining: From the reception studies of the 1970s and 1980s to the stress laid on intermedial and intercultural relations, not forgetting the work done on cultural transfers, this question opens up a wide field of theoretic, methodological, and aesthetic research, which is explored through this volume.

    "Taking its cue from recent theories of literary geography and fiction, Genealogical Fictions argues that narratives of familial decline shape the history of the modern novel, as well as the novel's relationship to history. Stories of families in crisis, Jobst Welge argues, reflect the experience of historical and social change in regions or nations perceived as "peripheral." Though geographically and temporally diverse, the novels Welge considers all demonstrate a relation among family and national history, genealogical succession, and generational experience, along with social change and modernization. Welge's wide-ranging comparative study focuses on the novels of the late nineteenth century, but it also includes detailed analyses of the pre-Victorian origin of the genealogical-historical novel and the evolution of similar themes in twentieth-century literature.
