Using data from Understanding Society, and robust estimation methods we find that Pakistani and Bangladeshi groups have the highest poverty entry rates (23-26%), followed by Indian, black Caribbean and black African groups (9-11%) and the white majority (6%). Indians and Pakistani's have the highest poverty persistence rates (66%), white majority the lowest (52%), the remaining groups around 55%. We find considerable within group heterogeneity: for most groups, education of the head of household (HoH) and household employment rate reduces poverty entry risk, while the presence of children increases it (education does not matter for black African and Bangladeshi groups and presence of children for Bangladeshi, black Caribbean and black African groups). We also find that living in London reduces the risk of poverty entry for Indians and white majority while ill-health of the HoH increases the poverty entry risk for white majority. The only factor that affects the risk of poverty persistence is household type although the type of household that matters varies across ethnic group. We also show that simple models which ignore initial poverty status and non-random attrition in estimating poverty persistence and poverty entry, underestimate (overestimate) the magnitude of poverty persistence for the Indian (black African) groups. Finally, we find scarring effects of experiencing poverty for black African and white majority groups.

This work is a contribution, first, toward measuring rural institu- tions taking multidimensional networks of socio-economic interactions in villages as the primitive and then toward exploring impacts of such institutions on household-access to a public employment programme: MGNREGS in India. Our focus is on the institution of clientelism- patronage-the presence and intensity of that. Using primary data we identify the presence of patron-client relationships, show that clients have better access to MGNREGS employment than non-clients and a household in elite-villages has higher access to MGNREGS employment. Complementary to our empirical exercises, we construct and analyze a theoretical model supporting our empirical findings.

Public and academic debate has revealed concern with the extent and implications of national identification among minority groups in Western societies. In this paper we present new analysis of Understanding Society that expands the limited evidence on minority identification. Drawing on Berrys acculturation framework, we explore patterns of dual minority and majority identification among the UKs minority ethnic groups. We find that minorities tend to hold strong British identities; but that that there are variations in identity acculturation across minority groups and by generation. We also show that there is substantial heterogeneity in the identities of the White majority population.

We assess comprehensively how incomes, employment, housing, mental health and life satisfaction change following a partnership dissolution, using data from 18 waves of BHPS. We confirm that women and children see living standards decline by more than men, on average, upon separation, but find that the fall in living standards is much greater for those women and children formally in high-income households; it is also high for older women with non-dependent children. We find that mental health and life satisfaction decline around separation, but both return quickly to pre-split levels at rates which are little related to post- split circumstances.

Using a rich, nationally representative data set with a large sample of minorities and matched small area characteristics, we explore differences in life satisfaction for ethnic groups living in UK. We test the hypothesis that minorities will be less satisfied, which will in part be explained by less favourable individual and area contexts, but that living in areas with a larger proportion of own ethnic group promotes well-being. We find that satisfaction is lower among minorities, ceteris paribus, but area concentration is associated with higher life satisfaction for certain groups. We discuss the implications of our findings.

In this note we take a first look at how the UK born identify across different dimensions (ethnicity, religion, political beliefs and region), to what extent the strength of attachment across these prescribed and elective identities strengthen or substitute each other and how these associations vary by ethnic and ethno-religious groups. For this analysis we make use of the new identity measures in the second wave of the UK longitudinal household survey, Understanding Society. We find that ethnic minorities report stronger religious and ethnic identities than the majority, political beliefs are stronger for those with stronger ethnic identity and both these are correlated with regional identities.

Following theories of social and economic identity, we use representative data containing measures of personal identity to investigate the interplay of work identity and hours of work in determining subjective wellbeing (job satisfaction, job-related anxiety and depression, and life satisfaction). We find that for a given level of hours, having a stronger work identity is associated with higher wellbeing on most measures. Working long hours is associated with lower wellbeing and working part-time is associated with higher wellbeing, but for men hours mainly affect their job-related anxiety and depression rather than reported satisfaction. The relationships between hours and wellbeing are generally strengthened when controlling for identity implying that individuals sort into jobs with work hours that match their identities. Work identity partially mitigates the adverse effects of long hours working on job satisfaction and anxiety (for women) and on life satisfaction (for men). The effects of both work hours and identity are substantial relative to benchmark effects of health on wellbeing.

In this paper, using data from Understanding Society over the period 2009-2014, we find that ethnic minorities with lower socio-economic status and those who were born in the UK report worse mental health (GHQ). Those who report experiencing ethnic and racial harassment (ERH) also report worse mental health than those who do not. We also found that ethnic minorities living in areas with a higher proportion of co-ethnics reported better mental health. However, ethnic concentration was not protective; rather, ERH had a stronger negative association with mental health for UK born minorities living in such areas. . We identified additional resilience factors: number of close friends and having certain personality traits - higher levels of Openness to Experience and Conscientiousness. We also found those who attend religious services more frequently and have higher levels of Agreebleness and Extraversion are poorly equipped to deal with ethnic and racial harassment.
