    In bringing biography and celebrity together, the essays in Making Stars interrogate contemporary and current understandings of each. Although biography was not invented in the eighteenth century, the period saw the emergence of works that focus on individuals who are interesting as much, if not more, for their everyday, lived experience than for their status or actions. At the same time, celebrity emerged as public fascination for the private lives of publicly visible individuals. Biography and celebrity are mutually constitutive, but in complex and varied ways that this volume unpacks. Contributors to this volume present us a picture of eighteenth-century celebrity that was mediated across multiple sites, demonstrating that eighteenth-century celebrity culture in Britain was more pervasive, diverse and, in many ways, more egalitarian, than previously supposed

    United here for the first time, the paintings of women by Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot (1796-1875) constitute a small but stunning and important body of work. Corot: Women offers a new appraisal of these intriguing figures by one of the nineteenth century's great masters of landscape. The women painted by Corot read, dream, and gaze at the viewer, conveying an independent spirit and a sense of their inner lives. Corot's handling of color and his deft, delicate touch applied to the female form resulted in pictures of quiet majesty. Although these paintings constitute a relatively small and little-known portion of his oeuvre, they were of great importance to the founders of modernist painting, including Paul Cézanne, Pablo Picasso, and Georges Braque. This publication features more than forty paintings by Corot--from the single-figure bust and full-length images of the 1840s through the 1860s nudes and his allegorical series devoted to the model in the studio. Essays by leading experts address Corot's debt to the old masters and the impact of his pictures on both nineteenth- and twentieth-century painting, the relationship of his figural work to his more famous landscape practice, his response to the shifting social position of artists' models, and the incursion of photography into artistic practice in the Second Empire and early Third Republic--Provided by publisher

    The only volume to comprehensively bring together developments from different disciplines that address the complex interplay between British Romantic literature and the visual artsIt covers a wide range of intermedial cultural productions, from popular to elite, and from the public to the domestic sphere, including literary texts, paintings and prints, literary galleries, exhibition catalogues, illustrated magazines, household objects and designAll the essays in this volume are newly commissioned and include cutting edge research from an interdisciplinary group of writers, literary scholars, art historians, and exhibition curatorsIt brings together work of emerging as well as established scholars in the field, from Europe, North America and Australia, reflecting the global significance of this growing fieldFrom the birth of the museum to the explosion of mass-produced illustrated books, the Romantic period (c. 1770-1840) was a moment of rapid change and fruitful experimentation in the fields of art and literature alike. New advances in print production encouraged a wider range of readers to engage with literary forms that opened a path into the once aristocratic field of the visual arts. This Companion captures the way recent engagements with visual studies have reshaped how we approach and understand the boundaries between print and visual culture in the period.     In bringing biography and celebrity together, the essays in Making Stars interrogate contemporary and current understandings of each. Although biography was not invented in the eighteenth century, the period saw the emergence of works that focus on individuals who are interesting as much, if not more, for their everyday, lived experience than for their status or actions. At the same time, celebrity emerged as public fascination for the private lives of publicly visible individuals. Biography and celebrity are mutually constitutive, but in complex and varied ways that this volume unpacks. Contributors to this volume present us a picture of eighteenth-century celebrity that was mediated across multiple sites, demonstrating that eighteenth-century celebrity culture in Britain was more pervasive, diverse and, in many ways, more egalitarian, than previously supposed.
