Why, then, is public discourse often - and today more than ever, it would seem - so uncivil, even delusional? The reason, argues James Martin in this timely book, lies in the way speech works to organise desire. More than knowledge or rational interests, public speech services an unconscious urge for a lost enjoyment, stimulating an excess in subjectivity that moves us in body and mind.
    James Martin draws upon the work of psychoanalyst Jacques Lacan as well as other Continental thinkers to set out a new approach to the analysis of rhetoric and answer the troubling question of whether civil discourse can ever hope to escape its obscene underside.

Why, then, is public discourse often - and today more than ever, it would seem - so uncivil, even delusional? The reason, argues James Martin in this timely book, lies in the way speech works to organise desire. Après avoir débuté sa carrière comme story-boarder et dessinateur d'affiches de films auprès de Neal Adams, légende du comics américain, il a travaillé pendant plus de vingt ans pour les studios d'animation de Walt Disney et DreamWorks, ainsi que pour Spike Lee, Steven Spielberg, James Cameron, Jean-Pierre Jeunet, Mattel, Paramount, Universal et Marvel Comics.0Il a notamment oeuvré sur Le bossu de Notre-Dame, Hercule, Tarzan, La planète au trésor, Violences sur la ville, Shrek 4, Le chat potté et Dragons 1 et 2. Très influencé par Dean Cornwell et Alphonse Mucha qu'il a étudié en profondeur, il a compilé dans Muse plus de 360 pages de nus artistiques et de commentaires sur sa méthode de dessin qui permettent à l'amateur d'art aussi bien qu'au dessinateur amateur ou professionnel de rentrer en détail dans les arcanes de son processus de création
