This groundbreaking study introduces and explores Lacan's complex theories of subjectivity and desire through close readings of canonical children's books such as Charlotte's Web, Stellaluna, Holes, Tangerine, and The Chocolate War, providing an introduction to an increasingly influential body of difficult work while making the claim that children's textual encounters are as significant as their existential ones in constituting their subjectivities and giving shape to their desires

"Emotion in Texts for Children and Young Adults: Moving stories takes up key issues in affect studies while putting forward new approaches and ways of thinking about the intricate entanglements of emotion, affect, and story in relation to the functions, processes, and influences of texts designed for youth. With an emphasis on national literatures and international scholarship, it examines a variety of storytelling forms, formats, genres, and media crafted for readers ranging from the very young to the newly adult. Layering recent cognitive approaches to emotion, affect studies, and feminist perspectives on emotion, it investigates not only what texts for children and young adults have to say about emotion but also how such texts try to move their readers. In this, the essays draw attention to the ways narrative literary texts address, elicit, shape, and/or embody emotion"--

A collection of newly-commissioned essays tracing cutting-edge developments in children’s literature researchTime has passed since 'having a PhD in children’s literature' was a funny joke in 'You've Got Mail'. Children's literature research is now one of the most dynamic fields of literary criticism and of education, and has a bright future ahead - as children’s writers and publishers invent yet more forms of literature for young people, and researchers find yet more sophisticated ways of exploring them. This collection takes informed and scholarly readers to the utmost frontier of children's literature criticism, from the intricate worlds of children's poetry, picturebooks and video games to the new theoretical constellations of critical plant studies, non-fiction studies and big data analyses of literature. Features the most recent directions in children's literature theory and criticism - Introduces the leading international scholars in the field as well as new emerging scholars - Offers a wide range of interdisciplinary approaches, including a mixture of empirical and theoretical research, and analyses at the intersection of education and literary studies.

"This book examplifies the interdisciplinary and transnational discourse of contemporary fairy-tale studies that seeks to foreground a fairy-tale text's situatedness as well as to historicize its intertextuality. Considering Cinderella as a soical text means to approach its refashioning across languages, media, and cultures, as seen in the contributions that focus on translation and adaptation; to focus on how fairy-tale discourses inform our understanding of various societies and cultures, with essays on how producing and interpreting Cinderella texts are intertwined with assumptions about family, sexuality, gender, childhood, and nation; and to treat material objects in fairy tales, like glass, and fairy-tale ephemera, like posters, as cultural texts. The essays collectively provide new insights into contextualizing, retelling, and reimag(in)ing Cinderella, and, though they wisely do not aim for a global survye, they do engage cultural traditions that, while remaining rooted in a Euro-American context, decenter the Basile-Perrault-Grimms-Disney geneaology. In doing so, the editors and contributors of this volume deploy a keen awareness of the cultural work that translation, as process and trope, does in the production of and responses to Cinderella texts, thus significantly advancing a culture of translation in fairy-tale studies."
