    Ce volume propose une réflexion sur les relations entre la religion et l’épistolarité en France et en Grande-Bretagne, aux xviie et xviiie siècles. Douze spécialistes de la période, en histoire, théologie et littérature, s’interrogent sur des correspon­dances officielles ou clandestines, spirituelles ou pastorales, pour présenter un panorama des rapports entre les correspondances manuscrites ou imprimées et l’orthodoxie ou les hétérodoxies. Outil de communication entre les croyants, les églises et les communautés, mais aussi entre les membres du clergé et les fidèles, la lettre, qu’elle soit ouverte ou secrète, qu’elle appelle une réponse ou le silence, qu’elle soit cachée, codée, interceptée, imprimée ou diffusée, qu’elle soit isolée ou fasse partie d’un corpus plus large, fut le principal moyen d’expression de la piété et du sentiment religieux dans des siècles marqués par de profonds bouleversements épistémologiques. Prises dans leur ensemble, ces contributions constituent la première tentative d’étude croisée du religieux et de l’épistolaire dans l’espace européen entre Réforme et Révolution.

    'First letters' can be understood in various ways: as the first letters written by a person, such as the letters of children, or of drafts which were preserved, amended and copied; as the first letter of a particular type, such as an experienced letter-writer's first love letter; and as the first letter to a new correspondent, among many others. The idea of a first letter also suggests a link with the letters that follow: what is the connection between the first letter and those which come after it? Written by academics specializing in letter-writing internationally, this volume examines the letters of various authors, philosophers, and artists, including Benjamin Constant, José-Maria de Heredia, Voltaire, Diderot, Coleridge, De Quincey, and others.     CE LIVRE EST NÉ DE LA VOLONTÉ DE DÉCLINER une piste que nous n'avions pu aborder dans notre précédent ouvrage, Le Livre et ses espaces, qui envisageait le livre dans sa mise en scène spatiale, réelle et métaphorique, que ce soit à travers l'espace du livre - ses dimensions -, l'espace dans le livre - la typologie de la page -, ou l'espace hors du livre - la bibliothèque par exemple. Dans L'Esthétique du livre par contre, c'est le livre comme lieu d'expériences sensibles que nous souhaitons traiter. Mais que l'on ne s'y méprenne pas ; c'est plus la question de la perception du livre comme objet, industriel ou non, que ses liens éventuels avec la création artistique qui nous intéresse. Et plutôt que d'en rester à la simple analyse du beau livre avec les deux sous-entendus qui l'accompagnent : le beau livre serait le livre d'artiste ou le livre d'art, et l'esthétique du livre l'affaire exclusive des bibliophiles, nous avons préféré partir des perceptions suscitées par l'objet livre pour creuser ses dimensions esthétiques et les impressions qu'il engendre.

    How did people learn to write letters in the eighteenth century? Among other books, letter-writing manuals provided a possible solution. Although more than 160 editions can be traced for the eighteenth century, most manuals were largely intended for men. As a consequence, when The Ladies Complete Letter-Writer was released in London in 1763, it was the first manual to be exclusively destined for women in eighteenth-century Britain.Even though it was published anonymously, several elements tend to show that it must have been edited by Edward Kimber. It was reprinted in Dublin in 1763 and in London in 1765 and largely circulated. The reasons for its success may have come from its concern in epistolary rhetoric, its original organisation, or the entertainment provided by examples coming from different sources, among which letters by Eliza Haywood, Samuel Richardson, Mary Collier, or the Marquise de Lambert. It also provided women with a variety of subjects which were supposed to be part of their sphere of interest, and others which were not, thus questioning a number of pre-conceived ideas on women and their way of writing with or without propriety.Unedited since 1765, the manual is now presented with introduction, notes and two indices focusing on the issues of sources, society and epistolary writing.
