A young man has an affair with a married woman, but he is terrified her husband will challenge him to a duel and kill him. At a party, he flirts with a girl who believes she is truly loved. Life seems full of joy. The doorbell rings. The husband enters the room. Based on Schnitzler's play 'Liebelei', David Harrower's 'Sweet Nothings' captures the power of sexual longing, the cruelty of tradition and the vulnerability of those in love. His adaptation was first performed at the Young Vic Theatre, London, in March 2009.

Schiller's masterpiece hinges on a brilliantly imagined meeting between Mary, Queen of Scots - focus of simmering Catholic dissent and her cousin Elizabeth, Queen of England, who has imprisoned her. Isolated by their duplicitous male courtiers, the women collide headlong, each wrestling with the rank, ambition and destiny their births have bestowed, against a thrilling background of intrigue, plot and counter-plot. David Harrower's version of Mary Stuart premiered at the Citizen's Theatre, Glasgow, in October 2006.

Ciara's father Mick kept her as his hidden treasure, making sure his only daughter was shielded from what he did and the men and women with whom he associated. Now Mick is dead and his legacy, so bound up in the landscape of Glasgow, that infamous no mean city, must be faced. As Ciara seeks to further the reputation of her art gallery, her world starts to fragment. Marked by the deep contradictions of her father, the art world and the place that made them all, she stands on a threshold.

First staged at Edinburgh's Traverse Theatre in 1998, 'Kill the Old Torture their Young' is an urban tragicomedy of alienation, as what could have been a hymn to a beautiful Scottish city becomes a muffled cry of rage against alienation and disconnection. A documentary maker returns to the place of his birth. His task is to film his impressions. Each of the individuals he encounters has a story to tell about the past or their life and aspirations in the city, but the question is whether anyone will listen.

First produced at the Traverse Theatre, Edinburgh, in 1996, 'Knives in Hens' is a brutal fable of awakening consciousness, a stark, fierce study of sex and knowledge set in a timeless and spartan rural community, where conversation is a blunt and functional tool. The wife of a ploughman has no understanding of the figurative language he uses, but she begins an extraordinary journey towards articulacy, demanding names for the world she sees around her and seeking knowledge that will lead her towards God. At the same time, a threatening love triangle emerges between the couple and the reviled village miller.

Each of the individuals he encounters has a story to tell about the past or their life and aspirations in the city, but the question is whether anyone will listen

At the same time, a threatening love triangle emerges between the couple and the reviled village miller

David Harrower's version of Mary Stuart premiered at the Citizen's Theatre, Glasgow, in October 2006
