    Wilderness mythology is one of the most abiding creations in the history of religions, and yet it has not previously been subject to scrutiny or theorizing from a cross-cultural, 'study-of-religions perspective'. This book addresses the need for cross-cultural anthropological and history of religions analyses by offering in-depth case studies of the use and functions of wilderness spaces in diverse religions. It offers new theoretical perspectives on the study of religious spatialities, cosmologies, and ideas of wild nature that challenge previous dichotomizing approaches.

    This article discusses the reasons for the religious reactions to the Harry Potter novels, arguing that the books contribute to, and reflect, the reconfiguration of religion in contemporary society. The article analyses the media qualities of fantasy literature and the specific representation of magic in the novels and argues that these aspects form an important part of the reasons for the religious reactions. Fantasy literature and other popular culture that represents and mediates religious expressions and phenomena actively contribute to the reconfiguration of, and communication about, religion in contemporary society and are thus of consequence for what we understand ‘religion' to be in the study of religions.

    Surveying the research field of radical religion, this article identifies major trends that have focused on radical beliefs, marginalisation, and societal relations. The article suggests that to understand radical religion in more depth, the focus on radical beliefs and exterior relations in radical religion research should be supplemented by addressing group-internal ideals of devotion and the role of emotionality and narrativity. I argue that these aspects are important for the formation and continued pull of radical religion, for enduring forms of total devotion that enable identity fusion and motivate costly sacrifice. I present the concept of total devotion and an approach to how shared ideals of devotion, emotionality, narrativity and in-group dynamics in radical religion can be analysed. Finally, the article calls for a historicization of the study of radical religion and highlights contributions to this thematic issue that analyse forms of total devotion from the ancient world.

    This article analyses ideals of total devotion in the Hebrew Bible, concentrating on the book of Deuteronomy. Understanding total devotion as an intense, emotional, and total relationship between a god and the worshippers, the analysis spotlights Deuteronomy 6–7, investigating emotion expressions used of the relation between the deity and Israel, their narrative embedding, and how narrativity stimulates and sustains emotions. I argue that the ideal of devotion involves a totality of scope, and – taking the broader affective and narrative economy into account – significant emotional intensity. The command to love is entangled in an emotionally intense elicitation of fear and disgust supporting enclave formation, identity fusion and costly sacrifice. Deuteronomy 1–11 can be understood as aiming to train devotion affectively and narratively. The analysis indicates that more attention should be paid to emotions, narrativity, and group-internal ideals of devotion in radical religion research.
