The death of Mallarmé, on the 9th of September, 1898, occupied a more important place in the press than the assassination of the Empress of Austria the following day. While Sissi made headlines for a few days, his disappearance from this world arouses many reactions, both in France and abroad, until the first anniversary of his death. These obituaries and background studies (many of which were still unpublished, especially those of foreign authors) are for the first time united. From these testimonies a contrasting image of Mallarmé emerges; the vision of an obscure, decadent poet, cut off from the world and a perfect representative of the old school, is still dominant, but those of a man open to his time and a new horizon are beginning to assert themselves. And though there are so many who doubt the posthumous destiny of the work, there are more lucid ones who recognize an 'admirable presentiment' in the dream of art of Mallarmé
