    Far from teleological historiography, the pan-European perspective on Early Modern drama offered in this volume provides answers to why, how, where and when the given phenomena of theatre appear in history. Using theories of circulation and other concepts of exchange, transfer and movement, the authors analyze the development and differentiation of European secular and religious drama, within the disciplinary framework of comparative literature and the history of literature and concepts. Within this frame, aspects of major interest are the relationship between tradition and innovation, the status of genre, the proportion of autonomous and heteronomous creational dispositions within the artefacts or genres they belong to, as well as strategies of functionalization in the context of a given part of the cultural net. Contributions cover a broad range of topics, including poetics of Early Modern Drama; political, institutional and social practices; history of themes and motifs (Stoffgeschichte); history of genres/cross-fertilization between genres; textual traditions and distribution of texts; questions of originality and authorship; theories of circulation and net structures in Drama Studies

    This volume responds to the current interest in computational and statistical methods to describe and analyse metre, style, and poeticity, particularly insofar as they can open up new research perspectives in literature, linguistics, and literary history. The contributions are representative of the diversity of approaches, methods, and goals of a thriving research community. Although most papers focus on written poetry, including computer-generated poetry, the volume also features analyses of spoken poetry, narrative prose, and drama. The contributions employ a variety of methods and techniques ranging from motif analysis, network analysis, machine learning, and Natural Language Processing. The volume pays particular attention to annotation, one of the most basic practices in computational stylistics. This contribution to the growing, dynamic field of digital literary studies will be useful to both students and scholars looking for an overview of current trends, relevant methods, and possible results, at a crucial moment in the development of novel approaches, when one needs to keep in mind the qualitative, hermeneutical benefit made possible by such quantitative efforts

    Since the beginning of the 19th century, quantitative techniques have been used in literary and human sciences to describe, analyze and interpret texts. Such approaches were underrepresented until the end of the 20th century, but are becoming increasingly important in the digital humanities. The aim of the volume is to contextualize theories of theory, methodology and subject history on the one hand, and on the other hand to examine the significance of their results with a view to the digital present. In view of the innovative verve of digital humanities, it should not be forgotten that the idea of ​​juxtaposing interpretive close reading with descriptive-analytical, remote reading is not much younger than the idea of ​​close reading itself. Counting is by no means the first through the 'digital revolution' of the humanities. Rather, what has been determined by late Dilthey as the subject of the understanding and qualitatively oriented humanities has been declared 'measurable' for some 200 years. Seit Beginn des 19. Jahrhunderts werden in den Literatur- und Geisteswissenschaften quantitative Verfahren angewandt, um Texte zu beschreiben, zu analysieren und zu interpretieren. Bis zum Ende des 20. Jahrhunderts waren solche Ansätze unterrepräsentiert, gewinnen im Zuge der Digital Humanities jedoch sehr stark an Bedeutung. Ziel des Bandes ist es, quantifizierende Verfahren einerseits theorie-, methoden- und fachgeschichtlich zu kontextualisieren, andererseits aber auch mit Blick auf die digitale Gegenwart zu prüfen, welchen Stellenwert ihre Ergebnisse haben. Angesichts der innovativen Verve der Digital Humanities darf nicht vergessen werden, dass die Idee, einem interpretativen close reading ein (vermeintlich?) deskriptiv-analytisches distant reading gegenüberzustellen, nicht sehr viel jünger ist als die Idee des close reading selbst. Denn Zählen ist keinesfalls erst durch die 'digitale Revolution' der Geisteswissenschaften denkbar geworden. Vielmehr wird schon seit ungefähr 200 Jahren das, was vom späten Dilthey als Gegenstand der verstehenden und qualitativ orientierten Geisteswissenschaften bestimmt wurde, auch zum 'messbaren' Objekt erklärt.

    The Brenner-Archives is a research institute at the University of Innsbruck. It forms the Tyrolean/ South Tyrolean literary archives as well as nationally oriented literary archives throughout Austria. Its name derives from the cultural journal “Der Brenner”. The Brenner-Archives was founded in 1964 on the basis of a contract between the Austrian Government and Ludwig von Ficker (1889-1967), the editor of the journal “Brenner”. In his editorial archives, there was a separated collection of a considerable part of Georg Trakl´s literary estate. It consisted of the manuscripts by the “Brenner” staff and the extensive correspondence by Ludwig von Ficker to personalities from the fields of literature, philosophy and art (among others: Paul Celan, Martin Heidegger, Karl Kraus, Else Lasker-Schüler, Christine Lavant, Rainer Maria Rilke). - Die Zeitschrift „Mitteilungen aus dem Brenner-Archiv“, die seit den frühen achtziger Jahren Jahr für Jahr regelmäßig erscheint (Nr. 1/1982), informiert zunächst einmal über die Aktivitäten des Forschungsinstituts Brenner-Archiv: über neue Nachlässe, über neue Forschungsprojekte, über neue Publikationen. Darüber hinaus bringt sie wissenschaftliche Beiträge aus aller Welt über AutorInnen bzw. Themen, die mit dem „Brenner“, seinem Umkreis oder den mehr als 170 Nachlässen des Instituts (besonders von „Brenner“-Mitarbeitern und von Tiroler AutorInnen des 19. und 20. Jahrhunderts) in einem Konnex zu sehen oder auch in einen Konnex zu stellen sind; Fachgebiete sind Literaturwissenschaft, Philosophie, (Kultur-)Geschichte.     Die Beiträge des Sonderheftes der Zeitschrift für Ästhetik und Allgemeine Kunstwissenschaft vermessen einen bislang nur wenig beachteten Forschungsbereich: die Ästhetik der Skalierung. Ob in Texten oder Bildern, Tönen oder Performances – ästhetische Phänomene lassen sich anhand eines Spektrums skalieren, das von ›minimal‹ bis ›maximal‹ reicht. Von kurz bis lang, klein bis groß, leise bis laut, langsam bis schnell lässt sich aus dieser Perspektive eine Vielzahl künstlerischer Phänomene mit großem Erkenntnisgewinn betrachten. Wesentlich ist die mit dem Begriff der Skalierung aufgerufene Vorstellung einer stufenweisen Entfaltung, das heißt einer graduellen Quantifizierung in Raum und Zeit: In zwölf Untersuchungen werden diese Möglichkeiten anhand verschiedener Künste seit der frühen Moderne bis in die unmittelbare Gegenwart in den Blick genommen und die Potenziale von Kompression und Amplifikation diskutiert. Mit Beiträgen von Carlos Spoerhase, Gesa zur Nieden, Isa Wortelkamp, Nicola Glaubitz, Benjamin Krautter, Marcus Willand, Andrew Fisher, Steffen Siegel, Marc Ries, Claudia Tittel, Lilian Haberer, Veronica Peselmann und Jens-Christian Rabe.

    Dieser Artikel behandelt die Operationalisierung von Figurentypen im deutschsprachigen Drama. Ausgehend von der dramen- und theatergeschichtlichen Forschung werden Figuren bestimmt, die einem der drei Figurentypen ›Intrigant*in‹, ›tugendhafte Tochter‹ und ›zärtlicher Vater‹ entsprechen. Für die Figuren wurden eigenschaftsbasierte Datensätze erstellt, die zu ihrer automatischen Klassifikation herangezogen werden. Neben die inhaltliche Komplexität von Figuren und die theoretische Bestimmung von Figurentypen tritt die methodische Herausforderung, aus einer kleinen Menge an Annotationen zu generalisieren. Unsere Experimente zeigen, dass sich die gewählten Typen jeweils innerhalb einer Grundgesamtheit als abgrenzbare Teilmengen herausbilden

    This volume responds to the current interest in computational and statistical methods to describe and analyse metre, style, and poeticity, particularly insofar as they can open up new research perspectives in literature, linguistics, and literary history. The contributions are representative of the diversity of approaches, methods, and goals of a thriving research community. Although most papers focus on written poetry, including computer-generated poetry, the volume also features analyses of spoken poetry, narrative prose, and drama. The contributions employ a variety of methods and techniques ranging from motif analysis, network analysis, machine learning, and Natural Language Processing. The volume pays particular attention to annotation, one of the most basic practices in computational stylistics. This contribution to the growing, dynamic field of digital literary studies will be useful to both students and scholars looking for an overview of current trends, relevant methods, and possible results, at a crucial moment in the development of novel approaches, when one needs to keep in mind the qualitative, hermeneutical benefit made possible by such quantitative efforts

Jahrhunderts werden in den Literatur- und Geisteswissenschaften quantitative Verfahren angewandt, um Texte zu beschreiben, zu analysieren und zu interpretieren. Bis zum Ende des 20. Jahrhunderts waren solche Ansätze unterrepräsentiert, gewinnen im Zuge der Digital Humanities jedoch sehr stark an Bedeutung. Ziel des Bandes ist es, quantifizierende Verfahren einerseits theorie-, methoden- und fachgeschichtlich zu kontextualisieren, andererseits aber auch mit Blick auf die digitale Gegenwart zu prüfen, welchen Stellenwert ihre Ergebnisse haben. Angesichts der innovativen Verve der Digital Humanities darf nicht vergessen werden, dass die Idee, einem interpretativen close reading ein (vermeintlich?) deskriptiv-analytisches distant reading gegenüberzustellen, nicht sehr viel jünger ist als die Idee des close reading selbst. Denn Zählen ist keinesfalls erst durch die 'digitale Revolution' der Geisteswissenschaften denkbar geworden. Vielmehr wird schon seit ungefähr 200 Jahren das, was vom späten Dilthey als Gegenstand der verstehenden und qualitativ orientierten Geisteswissenschaften bestimmt wurde, auch zum 'messbaren' Objekt erklärt

    Dieser Artikel behandelt die Operationalisierung von Figurentypen im deutschsprachigen Drama. Ausgehend von der dramen- und theatergeschichtlichen Forschung werden Figuren bestimmt, die einem der drei Figurentypen ›Intrigant*in‹, ›tugendhafte Tochter‹ und ›zärtlicher Vater‹ entsprechen. Für die Figuren wurden eigenschaftsbasierte Datensätze erstellt, die zu ihrer automatischen Klassifikation herangezogen werden. Neben die inhaltliche Komplexität von Figuren und die theoretische Bestimmung von Figurentypen tritt die methodische Herausforderung, aus einer kleinen Menge an Annotationen zu generalisieren. Unsere Experimente zeigen, dass sich die gewählten Typen jeweils innerhalb einer Grundgesamtheit als abgrenzbare Teilmengen herausbilden
