    This paper asks whether social movements taking place on Twitter affect gender-based violence (GBV). Using Twitter data and machine learning methods, we construct a novel data set on the prevalence of Twitter conversations about GBV. We then link this data to weekly crime reports at the federal state level from the United States. We exploit the high-frequency nature of our data and an event study design to establish a causal impact of Twitter social movements on GBV. Our results point out that Twitter tweets related to GBV lead to a decrease in reported crime rates. The evidence shows that perpetrators commit these crimes less due to increased social pressure and perceived social costs. The results indicate that social media could significantly decrease reported GBV and might facilitate the signaling of social norms.

We show that although T&O reduces firm demand for routine relative to abstract task-based jobs, affected workers do not face higher probability of non-employment or lower earnings growth than unaffected workers. Rather, firms that adopt T&O offer routine workers re-training opportunities to upgrade to more abstract jobs. Older workers form an important exception: T&O increases the risk that they permanently withdraw from the labor market and reduces their earnings, regardless of the tasks they performed in the firm prior to T&O.

    While gender differences in labor force participation and wages have been studied extensively, gender gaps in cognitive skills among adults are not yet well understood. Using the PIAAC dataset, this paper presents novel findings on cognitive skill distributions by gender across 34 countries. Despite increasing educational equality, inequalities in numeracy skills favoring men compared to women are pervasive. These skill differences account for a sizable part of the gender wage gap. Furthermore, there are larger disadvantages for women at the top of the wage distribution, which are complemented by lower returns to skills compared to men. We also find that these numeracy-wage patterns are especially pronounced for parents and for those with the highest degree in a non-STEM field of study.

    In Deutschland wird seit einiger Zeit über die Verteilung von Vermögen und Einkommen diskutiert. Grundtenor der Debatte scheint zu sein, dass die Einkommens- und Vermögensungleichheit ständig zunimmt. Die empirische Evidenz dieser Entwicklung wird aber kaum hinterfragt. So bleiben Wechselwirkungen, z.B. zwischen dem Abbau von Arbeitslosigkeit unter Niedrigqualifizierten und der Bruttolohnverteilung, unberücksichtigt und die sich verändernde Zusammensetzung des Arbeitskräftepotenzials ausgeklammert. Es wird nicht hinreichend auf die gerade in Deutschland sehr deutlichen Unterschiede in der Dynamik von Brutto- und Nettogrößen, z.B. bei der Einkommensverteilung, hingewiesen, und die Rolle von öffentlichen Gütern und der Größe bzw. Zusammensetzung von Haushalten bleibt unberücksichtigt. Auf Basis einer angeblich dramatisch anwachsenden ökonomischen Ungleichheit werden radikale wirtschaftspolitische Maßnahmen verlangt, z.B. Eingriffe in die Primäreinkommensverteilung oder Änderungen in der Steuerpolitik. Die Einführung des Mindestlohns zum 1. Januar 2015 und die Forderung nach einer raschen Erhöhung auf 10 Euro sind hierfür Beispiele. Es besteht die Gefahr, dass die Reformen der Agenda 2010 weiter zurückgenommen werden. Das Ziel der Studie besteht darin, die aktuellsten verfügbaren Daten zur Einkommensungleichheit in Deutschland im Zeitablauf darzustellen. Dabei soll nicht nur auf die Beschäftigten, sondern auf die gesamte Erwerbsbevölkerung (alle erwerbsfähigen Personen) abgestellt werden.Die Rolle der sich verändernden Zusammensetzung der Erwerbsbevölkerung und der Beschäftigung werden analysiert und internationale Vergleiche angestellt.

    There is substantial variation in working time even within employer-employee matches, and yet estimates of the Frisch elasticity of labor supply can be near zero. This paper proposes a tractable theory of earnings and working time to interpret these observations. Production complementarities attenuate the response of working time to idiosyncratic, or worker-specific, shocks, but firm-wide shocks are mediated by preference parameters. The model can be identified using firm-worker matched data, revealing a Frisch elasticity of around 0.5. A quasi-experimental approach that exploits only idiosyncratic variation would find an elasticity less than half this.

    We conducted a field experiment to evaluate the impact of job-search assistance on the employment of recently arrived refugees in Germany. The treatment group received job-matching support: an NGO identified suitable vacancies and sent the refugees' CVs to employers. Results of follow-up phone surveys show a positive and significant treatment effect of 13 percentage points on employment after twelve months. These effects are concentrated among low-educated refugees and those facing uncertainty about their residence status. These individuals might not search effectively, lack access to alternative support programmes, and may be disregarded by employers due to perceived higher hiring costs.

    This paper investigates how the size of co-ethnic networks at the time of arrival affect the economic success of immigrants in Germany. Applying panel analysis with a large set of fixed effects and controls, we isolate the association between initial network size and long-run immigrant outcomes. We also look at those who were assigned to an initial location independently of their choice allows a causal interpretation of our estimates. We find that immigrants initially located in places with larger co-ethnic networks are more likely to be employed at first, but have a lower probability of investing in human capital.

    This paper investigates the economic performance of immigrants from the Former Soviet Union (FSU) countries in Canada. The contribution of this paper lies in its use of a natural experiment to detect possible differential labour market performances of Soviet immigrants prior to and after the collapse of the Soviet Union. In short, the collapse of the former Soviet Union allows an exogenous supply change in the number and type of FSU immigrants potentially destined to enter Canada. For this purpose, Census microlevel data from the 1986, 1991, 1996 and 2001 Canadian Census are utilized to estimate earnings and employment outcomes for pre- and post-FSU immigrants. -- Immigration ; integration

    This paper investigates the effect of co-worker characteristics on wages, measured by the average person effect of coworkers in a wage regression. The effect of interest is identified from within-firm changes in workforce composition, controlling for person effects, firm effects, and sector-specific time trends. My estimates are based on a linked employer employee dataset for the population of workers and firms of the Italian region of Veneto for years 1982-2001. I find that a 10 percent increase in the average labour market value of co-workers' skills is associated with a 3.6 percent wage premium. I also find that around one fourth of the wage variation previously explained by unobserved firm heterogeneity is actually due to variation in co-worker skills, and that between 10 and 15 percent of the immigrant wage gap can be explained by differences in coworker characteristics.

    We use a panel of European firms to investigate the relationship between intangible assets and productivity. We disentangle between tfp and technology adoption, while available studies so far have considered only a notion of productivity conflating the two effects. To this aim, we estimate production function parameters allowing, within each sector, for the existence of multiple technologies.
