    Unlike previous efforts that have only addressed literary twinship as a footnote to the doppelganger motif, this book makes a case for the complexity of literary twinship across the literary spectrum. It shows how twins have been instrumental to the formation of comedies of mistaken identity, the detective genre, and dystopian science fiction. The individual chapters trace the development of the category of twinship over time, demonstrating how the twin was repeatedly (re-)invented as a cultural and pathological type when other discursive fields constituted themselves, and how its literary treatment served as the battleground for ideological disputes: by setting the stage for debates regarding kinship and reproduction, or by partaking in discussions of criminality, eugenic greatness, and ‘monstrous births’. The book addresses nearly 100 primary texts, including works of Mary Elizabeth Braddon, Wilkie Collins, Charles Dickens, Arthur Conan Doyle, Aldous Huxley, Christopher Priest, William Shakespeare, and Zadie Smith.

Mittlerweile ist die Beschäftigung mit Männlichkeit auch in Medizin, Psychologie, Soziologie, Film- und Literaturwissenschaft zu einem festen Bestandteil geworden. Das Handbuch stellt einen Dialog zwischen den etablierten anglo-amerikanischen Masculinity Studies und der in Europa betriebenen Männlichkeitsforschung her, beleuchtet die wissenschaftlichen Fragestellungen und führt die wichtigsten natur-, sozial- und geisteswissenschaftlichen Perspektiven in einem interdisziplinären Ansatz zusammen.     The misdemeanours of Patricia Highsmith’s infamous character Tom Ripley (who originally appeared in five novels, published between 1955 and 1991) have enjoyed a fruitful life on screen. The new millennium saw the production of three Ripley adaptations, a fact that is testimony to the audience’s ongoing fascination with a shady character whose motivation remains in the dark. This ‘Ripley Renaissance’ is indicative of the way the impostor figure has risen to global stardom in the last decade, and it also points to the void which is to be found at the core of Ripley’s character. Due to his ambiguous sexual identity, the character is immensely adaptable to a multitude of genres and interpretations. Consequently, Ripley’s on-screen embodiments range from a tragic 1950s closet homosexual ( The Talented Mr. Ripley , 1999), a sadistic sociopath who is out to destroy the existence of a reliable breadwinner ( Ripley’s Game , 2003), to a dilettante upstart with more than just a touch of the gigolo ( Ripley Under Ground , 2005). By focusing on the unique problem-case of the Ripley character, this article not only attempts to challenge the traditional, hierarchical relationship between ‘original’ and ‘adaptation’ but also points to some parallels between the field of adaptation studies and gender discussions. ; academic.oup.com/adaptation/article/6/3/355/2583851

    Following a path established in Robert Warshow’s chapter on “The Gangster as Tragic Hero,” this article attempts to look at connections between the ancient genre of tragedy and contemporary mob movies. On the one hand, there are structural parallels when it comes to plot, which adheres to the formula of decline, brought about by erroneous judgments. On the other hand, mobsters are often portrayed as powerful, ruthless tyrants who retain a kind of Shakespearean grandeur. Using examples from films by Michael Mann, Martin Scorsese, and Ridley Scott, my argument links contemporary American crime drama to the origins of tragedy (as laid out by Aristotle in Poetics) and some canonical examples of the genre, like The Merchant of Venice. Having established this theoretical framework, I shall offer a detailed discussion of Martin Scorsese’s The Departed, one of the most successful mob movies in recent years. In this film, Scorsese toys with the tragic genre both on the level of plot and with regard to his flawed characters, who struggle to overcome guilt and tragic hubris, yet cannot escape their inevitable tragic downfall. ; www.aspeers.com/2010/schwanebeck

    Whereas the city of London mainly served as a safe haven and as the backdrop for expository scenes in the early James Bond films, it has acquired a more prominent role within the most recent films in the series. Skyfall (2012), in particular, saw a significant departure from the franchise’s traditional reliance on exotic locations and based nearly a third of its running time in the British capital. At the same time, the notion of Bond’s ‘coming home’ (which serves as a dominant motif in the film) coincides with a paradigm shift in post-9/11 geopolitics.
