    Fantasy sport has risen in popularity in the last decade with the advent of web 2.0. As people from around the world watch sporting events today, the internet has become an ideal site to instantly disseminate results and achievements for avid fans and followers. This paper is an attempt to position fantasy sports in the realm of game studies, drawing from the specific case of fantasy football (soccer in North America). Borrowing from and building on Roger Caillois classical game typology, this paper seeks to arrive at a nuanced understanding of both fantasy sport as a game and the experience it offers to participants. By using an ethnographic approach, based on in-depth interviews and co-playing sessions, this study closely observes participants in-game performances in the Fantasy Premier League. By stitching together information from the interviews with observation of participants approaches and preferences along with the performance of their teams, this paper identifies the key decisions and processes that a player of fantasy sport is part of. By situating fantasy sport in the ludic debate of preparation versus luck, this paper offers unique insights into the various ways that players exert effort to succeed at the game. The use of an approach that examines what players do to their fantasy teams enables this paper to examine players psyches and the interrelated elements of fandom, favoritism and loyalty. Analysis of the data offers insights in to the various practices and approaches of players as well as lays the foundation of new concepts

    In an odd turn of phrase, the Masoretic tradition of 2 Kings 21:13b likens Jerusalem’s destruction to the wiping of a bowl or dish. This reading has almost universally been accepted in modern scholarship, with virtually no attention given to the significant variants in the other biblical versions. An analysis of these variants suggests a complex transmission history of this passage that has been profoundly shaped by a rich culture of interpretation within a dynamic sociolinguistic context.

    Previous scholarship searched for the Egyptian background of the Joseph story in New Kingdom Egypt and compared Gen 37-50 to the story of Sinuhe and the Tale of the Two Brothers, but a reevaluation of the evidence points to the Egyptian Late Period as the time of the Joseph story's composition. Besides the Egyptian names (Asenat, Potiphera, Zafenat-Paneach) the plot of the Joseph narrative reaches a deeper meaning against the backdrop of the story of the wise Ahiqar, which was found in its Aramaic version on Elephantine, and of an Egyptian papyrus from the Berlin collection, containing the motif of the seven years of hunger. When the evidence is considered together, the Joseph story is best described as a diaspora-novella that puts forward a concept of identity fitting best into the historical situation of Persian period Egypt.

    Observing the shifts and reversals of plot in Numbers and its revelations of character, the sly asides and polemics of the narrator, and especially the explosive conflicts that permeate the journey after Sinai leads the reader to experience Numbers not only as an anthology of different sorts of biblical materials - laws, legends, poetry, censuses and travelogue - but as a comprehensive and bold warning about the obstacles in forming a people Israel as well as a map of how to do so. The tools of narratology illuminate the subtle art of biblical writers who succeed by skillfully weaving together scattered tales and outbursts into a meaningful and larger whole that engages its readers.

    Biblical philology conventionally assumes the objectivity of the interpreter in recovering a single, stable meaning of its object of interpretation (the biblical text). This aim is imperiled by unexamined assumptions of this interpretive framework. The long tradition of male-dominated philology and theologically oriented scholarship obscures (gendered) dimensions in the study of language and its patterns in biblical texts. The following essay foregrounds the four main studies with a brief, focused sociology of knowledge in the field: how are certain types of metaphors deemed important objects of study for biblical philology while others remain unstudied? I propose a bias towards metaphors recognizable to the interpreters, while others are unrecognized as a result of the interpreters' social positioning.

    Philology seeks to reconstruct the meanings of words within their temporal and social contexts. As such, it relies on a historical-critical approach to texts. Just as historical reconstructions of social complexity benefit from gender studies, applying insights from gender criticism expands the conceptual horizon of philology. With a focus on the meanings of חל(ל) and קדשׁ, this paper applies a gender lens to philology in two ways. First, as gender criticism often challenges the imposition of binaries, the deconstruction of assumptions about sacred/profane and their assumed meanings allows us to perceive more nuance in the ancient concepts of חל(ל) and קדשׁ. By expanding our understanding of קדשׁ along lines suggested by Mary Douglas and others to encompass a conception of wholeness, חל(ל) can be understood as connoting a breach in wholeness that operates on a continuum relative to status and circumstance, rather than as a simple opposite of קדשׁ. Second, as gender studies have posited a correlation between maleness and wholeness, the connection between חל(ל) and femaleness can explain peculiarities both of the Israelite cult, and of certain cultural customs such as levirate marriage, political coup by sexual conquest, and the requirement to kill enemy women who are not virgins.

    Addressing the scholarly inattention to male fertility in the Hebrew Bible, this article examines how bones are figured in male bodies and configured in discourses about reproduction and kinship. Drawing on insights from new kinship studies, I analyze texts about bones in ancient Near Eastern medical and related literature to argue that wet bones are a cultural index for male fertility while dry bones signal infertility and a crisis of social regeneration. With special attention to Isaiah 66, we see male children sprout moist bones in their milky bodies as a promise of clan regeneration and the establishment of a future through male seed. By way of conclusion, towards a corporeal philology, I argue that Hebrew philology must incorporate embodiment and the materiality of language into its approaches, using examples from linguistic history and material culture of ʿṣm.

    Der Artikel geht von der Beobachtung aus, dass die Curricula und Konzepte des Religionsunterrichtes der interkulturellen christlichen Vielfalt von Schülerinnen und Schülern und dem interkulturellen Lernen bislang kaum Rechnung tragen. Vor diesem Hintergrund entwickelt er das Konzept einer interkulturell-intertextuellen Bibeldidaktik. Sie verbindet die Wahrnehmung der Vielfalt biblischer Auslegungstraditionen innerhalb der Weltchristenheit mit der Einsicht in die innerbiblische kulturelle Vielfalt. Entsprechend werden Interkulturelle Theologie und Arbeiten zur Intertextualität als Bezugswissenschaften in den Blick genommen und hinsichtlich ihres inhaltlichen wie methodischen Potentials für eine interkulturelle Bibeldidaktik skizziert. Drei Beispiele illustrieren Möglichkeiten der praktischen Umsetzung der interkulturellen Bibeldidaktik. The starting point of the article is the observation that current curricula for religious education do not take the intercultural Christian plurality of the pupils into account, nor do they provide concepts or material for intercultural learning. Therefore, we introduce a new concept of intercultural-intertextual Biblical didactics. It interlinks the awareness that world Christianity contains a wider range of traditions of Biblical interpretation with the insight that the Bible is culturally diverse in itself. Accordingly, intercultural theology and the concept of intertextuality are examined with regard to their potential to contribute to the content and methods of intercultural Biblical didactics. Three examples illustrate how intercultural Biblical didactics can be put into practice.

    Wie wünschenswert es sein kann, biblische Stoffe in Leichter Sprache zu formulieren, ist umstritten. Mit der Forderung der Vereinten Nationen nach Inklusion gehen didaktischerseits das Engagement und die Suche nach einer sog. „Leichten Sprache“ einher, die Menschen mit Beeinträchtigung oder geringerer sprachlicher Kompetenz einen besseren Zugang zu den biblischen Inhalten ermöglichen soll. Den Befürwortern stehen aber auch Skeptiker gegenüber. Vor diesem Hintergrund stellt unser Beitrag Grundzüge Leichter Sprache vor, diskutiert die Umsetzung anhand des Gleichnisses vom Barmherzigen Samariter und leitet daraus Leitlinien für eine gelingende Praxis ab. It is debatable whether it can be regarded as appropriate to express biblical material in “plain language,” a simplified language that addresses people who have learning difficulties or low language facility. According to the United Nations’ postulation for social inclusion, certain didactic efforts have begun to get involved at this very point, namely trying to find a plain language to facilitate access to biblical contents for people with learning disorders. However, there are also sceptics. Against this background, our contribution surveys the basic principles of plain language, discusses its implementation with reference to the parable of the Good Samaritan, and deduces on this basis guidelines for a good usage.

    While Emily Dickinson included many allusions to the biblical texts in her writing, this article focuses on her engagement with one particular biblical writer—the apostle Paul. Dickinson makes a number of references to Paul in her letters and poetry, often in ways that thoroughly unbalance what she considered to be his spiritual and heaven-centred gaze, thrusting it earthwards to bring new and unexpected meaning to matters such as friendship, love, death, suffering, and desire. Through taking a closer look at her writings in which she engages with the apostle, I consider Dickinson’s obvious desire to engage with Paul’s writings and her regular rejection of certain features of Pauline theology in favour of her own earth-centred spirituality. In particular, I explore the ways in which Dickinson’s faith stands at times uneasily alongside that of Paul, in her focus on the dreaded uncertainty of life after death and her unshakeable delight for a world in which both pain and paradise could be encountered.

    This article addresses the question of whether one needs to be LGBTQ+ or queer-identifying in order to engage in queer studies in theology and biblical studies. In surveying the popularity of queer as cultural currency in the media and the academy, I express concern with queer studies being undertaken as if it were one approach among others, arguing that it is an “anti-approach”. In directly responding to the question, “do you have to be queer to do this?” I argue that one does not need to be queer identified to engage with queer theologies or queer biblical studies. Four points are made about the engagement of heterosexual identifying intellectuals in queer studies: i) queer theory reveals how all identities are unstable, including heterosexuality; ii) heterosexuality is not the site of disruption for queer studies—it is patriarchy, cisnormativity and heteronormativity that require dismantling; iii) queer is about the production of antinormative knowledge, a practice that anyone can engage in; iv) where queer studies are also done in conjunction with nonnormative gender and sexualities, researchers must incorporate voices from those individuals or communities. The article concludes that there should be no concern about straight-identifying individuals doing queer studies, but we should be careful that queer theologies and queer biblical studies do not become “straight” and normative.

    “Aware-Settler” is a term coined here to describe the various hermeneutics that arise as increasingly, non-Indigenous biblical scholars take seriously that their research is done on colonized Land. Paying special attention to the principle of possessiveness, the article suggests breaking stubborn Settler-scholar hidden-default assumptions of ownership, proposing instead that biblical texts might be understood as another form of “Treaty territory.” Indigenous scholars’ common emphases on Landedness, relationality, spirituality, and community good, can inform methodologies employed by Settler biblical scholars. These hermeneutical principles, learned in a contact zone characterized by attention to reciprocity and respect, are employed in a brief look at Matthew 28:25–28. The so-called Great Commission is a foundational text of colonialism; many Indigenous scholars have judged it as “unreadable.” For that reason it provides a particularly appropriate test-case for applying Aware-Settler hermeneutics focussed on breaking claims of identity and ownership.

    The single greatest impediment to clarity in hermeneutics arises from the intuition that words have meaning as a property. This essay will show an alternative to the hermeneutics of subsistent meaning, displaying a way to think about hermeneutics as an interplay of expression and apprehension. By learning about “meaning” from the more pervasive phenomenon of inference and apprehension and reasoning toward language as a special case — rather than beginning from language (which harbours subsistent “meaning”) and treating other patterns of apprehension as “the language of music,” “the language of flowers,” and so on — we can articulate a hermeneutic that better explains interpretive difference, and provides ways to evaluating interpretive claims outwith the customary bounds of exegetical correctness.

    Nesse artigo refletimos sobre os esforços, as dificuldades e os avanços verificados para na parceria entre a ABHR e as Edições Paulinas no que se refere à publicação de pesquisas em estudos de religião. Como se trata de analisar textos impressos e suas formas de autorização e veiculação guiamo-nos pela compreensão de Roger Chartier acerca dos livros e de seus usos. Para esse autor, as mensagens religiosas, culturais, políticas e sociais, como toda leitura, não são discursos neutros, antes, eram exteriorizações das percepções do mundo social. A ABHR, fundada em 1999, precisava de um espaço de publicação - e de uma editora - que chancelasse junto à comunidade acadêmica os textos produzidos por seus pesquisadores. Verificamos, no artigo, o processo de constituição desse espaço de publicação junto aos seus membros, apontando os avanços e problemas que cercaram tais edições.

    A partir da hagiografia de Santa Bárbara, este artigo aborda as várias versões sobre a história da santa que viveu possivelmente durante o século III, na Nicomédia. Entretanto, após a realização do Concílio Vaticano II, um decreto papal retirou Bárbara (e dezenas de outros santos) do calendário geral da Igreja Católica. A falta de comprovação histórica sobre a sua real existência foi um dos motivos para a adoção de tal medida, que ficou conhecida como o caso dos “santos cassados”. Quando isso aconteceu, o culto à mártir degolada pelo pai já era bastante difundido em várias partes do mundo, inclusive em Salvador-BA. A partir de periódicos da época, o texto analisa as repercussões do fato e as peculiaridades da devoção a Santa Bárbara na capital baiana, observando principalmente sua estreita relação com as religiões afro-brasileiras. Ao analisar o contexto histórico da eclesiologia do Concílio Vaticano II e as características da referida devoção em Salvador, o artigo aborda temas como sincretismo religioso, duplo pertencimento e devoção popular. Desta forma, o trabalho visa propiciar algumas reflexões em torno da figura de Bárbara, santa que possui muitos devotos na atualidade.
